Overview

With the name being a mouthful the SV Autobiography does pack a serious punch, at least on paper. With a 5L supercharged engine, this Brit manages to make 502 lb-ft of torque with 550 horses under the hood. Although impressive on paper, these numbers are squashed by its brethren.

The equipment is surplus for its sub $200,000 price tag, even though the tech not without their flaws. Still, they make even the most highly outfitted Range Rover feel worth. But does the new 2017 version still hold its own against the competition?

The equipment is surplus for its sub $200,000 price tag, even though the tech not without their flaws. Still, they make even the most highly outfitted Range Rover feel worth. But does the new 2017 version still hold its own against the competition?

Features

9.3/10

Land Rover offers all the luxuries, all the bells, and whistles, in them. It does cost a whopping $177,200 for the base model though, which does feel like a bit much.

Trim

Land Rover Range Rover (SVAutobiography Dynamic)

MSRP

$177,200

Key Features

Range Rover SVAutobiography Dynamic uses an updated version of the 5.0-liter supercharged V8 gasoline engine and produces 557 hp and 502 lb-ft of torque. The Dynamic variant also features a lowered ride height and a more aggressive on-road suspension calibration.

We recommend

As stated above, the SVAutobiography trim does not have different trims, thus there is only one trim to choose from, and that is a great trim to own. There are however two variants whose cost is a little upsetting, but that is the price of luxury.

Engine

9.3/10
“The supercharged V-8 in the Dynamic is calibrated to produce 550 horsepower and 502 lb-ft of torque, just like in the non-Dynamic SVAutobiography and the Range Rover Sport SVR. Gear swaps come by way of a ZF-supplied eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.” - Car and Driver

Engine and Transmission

The engine of the Land Rover Range Rover Supercharged SVAutobiography Dynamic SWB is a 5-liter supercharged V8 unit. The engine revs freely and the performance comes naturally. Forced induction helps improve breathing, and consequently the power figures. As a result, it churns out a healthy 557 horsepower and 561 pound-feet of torque.

The transmission is an 8-speed automatic unit with paddle shifters behind the steering wheel and is tweaked to provide smooth instead of fast gear shifts. Land Rover only lends the Range Rover name to the most comfortable cars in its range and driving the 2017 Range Rover SVAutobiography will certainly invoke the feeling of power and luxury.

The competition to the Land Rover Range Rover SVAutobiography Dynamic consists of Mercedes-Benz AMG G 65, Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, and Bentley Bentayga Onyx Edition. These are powered by 6.0 Liter V12 Bi-turbo, 4.8-liter Twin Turbo V8, and 6.0-liter Twin-Turbo W12 engine that produces 621 hp, 570 hp, and 600 hp respectively. Going by pure numbers, the Land Rover comes dead last in the engine and transmission department.

Acceleration

Courtesy the huge supercharged engine and a slick automatic gearbox, the Land Rover posts great acceleration times, far better than the usual SUV crowd. It takes just 5.1 seconds to go from standstill to 60 mph, and only 13.2 seconds run a quarter mile. Thus, you can enjoy sports car performance in an SUV, which is simply marvelous.

The Mercedes takes nearly the same amount of time as the Land Rover to reach 60 mph, but the quarter mile time is unavailable. The Cayenne does proud to its Porsche badge, taking merely 3.8 seconds to reach 60 mph. The Bentley Bentayga does not have any official performance figures yet.

Braking and Handling

The adaptive air suspension provides a comfortable ride and absorbs most of the bumps easily. The steering responds well on curves and provides good feedback. Land Rover’s low turning radius adds to its handling making it easy to park and move in tight spaces.

Braking on the SVAutobiography is handled by 15.0-inch disc brakes in the front, and 14.4-inch disc brakes in the rear. The generous curb weight of 5505 pounds means that the Land Rover needs a lot of effort to shed its momentum. The exact distance taken by the car to come to a halt from 60 mph hasn’t been revealed yet.

The Porsche is the only car here that manages to break the sub-5000-pound weight category. It also has the biggest brakes of the lot, which translates to the best braking performance in this comparison.

Fuel Economy

7.0/10

In terms of fuel economy, SUVs have an inherent disadvantage over other cars. Their larger dimensions and heavier weights make them considerably less efficient. Even so, the Range Rover manages to post respectable economy figures. It can run for 14 miles within the city or 19 miles out on the highway on a single gallon of fuel.

The AMG Mercedes is obviously very less efficient, even less than the Range Rover. The Bentley isn’t too good either, with poorer efficiency within the city. The Porsche cruises ahead by just a little, managing better figures on the highway.

Interior

8.5/10

Luxury and comfort are the absolute highlights of the Range Rover, and the SWB SVAutobiography upholds the legacy. It can seat 5 passengers, and all the passengers are seated in extreme comfort. Sadly, the dashboard is not dual tone, which does make the cabin feel a lot more monotonous and bland than the competition.

There is a decent amount of headroom and unparalleled amount of shoulder and legroom in the front. Shoulder room is still great in the back, although the legroom is a little disappointing there.

Mercedes and Bentley know how to offer luxury to their customer, and they use their knowledge to endow the rear seats of the G 65 and the Bentayga with ample space for 2 people only. They know what people want when they look for a car in this segment, and then specifically engineer the car with that in mind. This also means that they are less versatile and accommodating than their fellow peers.

Infotainment System

The 2017 Land Rover Range Rover SVAutobiography Dynamic comes fitted with a new 10-inch touch screen infotainment display, which is housed on the dashboard. Apart from that, there are two 10.2-inch screens for the rear passengers too. It also comes loaded with:

  • DAB tuner
  • Sat-Nav
  • Bluetooth
  • USB connectivity
  • 29 speaker Meridian Audio System

Cargo Volume

Every SUV needs to have a generous amount of space in the trunk, otherwise, it isn't a good SUV. Thankfully, the Range Rover manages to stretch its moderate 24 and a half cubic feet of trunk space into an impressive 68 cubic feet by folding down the rear seats.

The G 65 has an even more impressive cargo bay, while the Porsche has just a smidge less space in the trunk when compared to the Range Rover. The Bentley has quite a disappointing boot normally, although folding the rear seats frees up quite a lot of space.

Towing Capacity

With off-road capabilities come towing responsibilities, and the Land Rover genes shine here. The car can pull an official figure of more than 7 thousand pounds, more than the weight of the car itself.

All cars here were built on strong chassis and employ powerful engines which means they can manage to haul an impressive amount of weights around. 77 hundred pounds is the standard weight that all of these cars manage without difficulty.

Exterior

9.3/10
“Although the theme of the SVAutobiography Dynamic leans toward understatement, there are a few interior and exterior details to distinguish this model from the rest of the lineup. Red Brembo brake calipers make their first appearance in the top-of-the-line Rangie here.” - Car and Driver

Dimensions and Weight

The Range Rover SVAutobiography Dynamic, even in the Short wheelbase variant, is a huge car. It is barely below 200 inches in length and just above 81 inches in width. The curb weight is just above 55 hundred pounds, which is a lot for any car.

The ground clearance is a generous 8.7 inches, which is good for saving the underbelly from scrapping over rocks but make no mistake; this car does not inspire confidence when handling off-road punishment, although the chassis is much more capable than it feels. You would be better off if you just stuck to the tarmac, although experienced drivers could pull a few tricks on this one.

The Porsche manages to be the lightest in this comparison, due to clever use of materials and precision engineering. The Mercedes on the other hand, is the heaviest here, tipping the scales at just under 57 hundred pounds. The Bentley is not too heavy, at almost 52 hundred pounds.

Competition

Mercedes-Benz AMG G 65

With AMG Badge adorning both the front and the rear of the car, the Mercedes-Benz AMG G 65 is a great choice for car enthusiasts. The performance is in the sports car league, luxury is no doubt the best, and the brand image exuded by the three-point star is undisputable. There are several reasons to buy this car.

However, the efficiency is low, off-road capabilities are limited, practicality takes a back seat and the cost is too high to justify.

Porsche Cayenne Turbo S

The Cayenne is more of a sports car than an SUV, with blazing performance and mind-blowing handling. The Cayenne can handle a race track with just as much gusto as a rocky trail or a simple highway.

As for the reasons to not buy a Porsche Cayenne there is no reason to not buy a Porsche Cayenne. It is a great car with tremendous capability.

Bentley Bentayga Onyx Edition

Looks don’t do the Bentley justice, as the signature headlamp design, the quad circle lights on the front, just take away from the imposing beast that it should be. That aside, it has all the luxuries that a Bentley usually offers, along with some limited off-road skills.

The biggest fault with the Bentley is the pricing, although if you survive that, the fuel costs will surely burn a hole in your pocket.

Final Verdict

Great by British standards but the collapses out of the microcosm that the Land Rover lives in, this car by Land Rover has a lot of catching up to do. Throw in some German competitors in the mix and you can see the SV Autobiography fall apart bit by bit as the parameters get more scrutinous.

The fact that the same country also houses the Bentley does not make it any easier for the Land Rover. The epitome of luxury Bentley and the underperforming Land Rover come from the same country, it’s hard to believe and the Germans acquire the middle ranks in this listing.
