When you want a luxury car but don’t want to spend that extra premium on German cars, Lexus is the only name that comes to mind. It’s not only about luxury vehicles, Lexus has some serious sports cars that are up there with their rivals and even cost much less. The Lexus IS350 F Sport was a real value-for-money sports car, but for the year 2022, we are going to have its replacement, the IS500 F Sport.

The 2022 IS500 F Sport is going to have a 5.0L V-8 engine under its hood, but no turbo or supercharger. The high-performance sedan segment has some serious contenders like the Mercedes-AMG C63, BMW M3, and Audi RS5 Sportback. Snatching away the throne from the likes of AMG C63 or M3 is going to be quite impossible, but the kind of performance Lexus is offering at the price will surely make buyers think

We Recommend

The 2022 Lexus IS500 F Sport Performance is offered in a well-appointed single trim option that has all the features necessary to pump the adrenaline within. Although Lexus is offering some more additional feature packages, they won’t majorly influence the raw factor except for a few cosmetic upgrades.

2022 Lexus IS 500 F Sport Sedan Engine and Performance

4.0/10

It’s confirmed that the IS500 is coming with a new 5.0L V-8 engine producing 472 hp & 395 lb-ft of torque. There is only one drivetrain option, which is RWD, and that’s what purists want anyway. The 8-speed automatic transmission, which was used on the IS350, will be used in the IS500 without any extra touches. The IS500 is a very closely guarded secret, and even the tiniest crumbs of information are rare. With the newer 472 hp and improved brake rotor size at the front, we are expecting this car to set the roads ablaze.

All the main players like BMW, Mercedes-AMG, and Audi have stopped putting V8s in their vehicles, and that’s a terrible thing to witness, especially if you are a performance purist. This was the right time for Lexus to introduce the IS500 with a V8. It would be interesting to see if this out-of-the-box thinking will do any good or not. If Lexus uses what everyone else isn't, we might even see a Twin-turbo V8 in the future, and the performance figures should be better left for our imagination.

*2021 Data used for reference

The power figures of the IS500 are very close to its competition, but the estimated 0-60mph timings aren’t. With 4.5 seconds on the clock, Lexus is getting slightly behind. A difference of a second or two doesn’t really matter as you won’t be racing inside this car anyway, but it should be pointed out nonetheless. These are manufacturer-speculated numbers, so we can expect them to improve in the final product. Audi RS5 Sportback is the fastest of the lot here, thanks to its twin-turbo V6 and Quattro tech, but it loses on the quarter-mile run to BMW M3 by a few tenths of a second. Also, there are rumors that the 2022 C63 will drop the V8 in favor of the Turbo I4 motor with EQ boost tech.

How does the 2022 Lexus IS500 F Sport handle?

We are yet to get our hands on the 2022 IS500 obviously, but cross-referencing the IS350’s handling dynamics, we are expecting some improvements over it. The IS350 was a true sports car with great stability and impressive steering response. The gear shifts were butter smooth. The braking performance of the IS350 was great too. The only thing it lacked was power when you press the throttle after a turn.

A turbo could have solved the issue, but it didn’t have that, and the IS500 too lacks that. Maybe that’s why Lexus has improved on the power front in a more traditional way rather than just throwing in some technical support. The Dynamic Handling package, which was a $4,200 option on the IS350, is now standard, and with the help of those adaptive dampers and 19-inch wheels, the car will handle with surgical precision.

2022 Lexus IS 500 F Sport Sedan Fuel Economy

6.0/10

Japanese automakers are very intelligent when it comes to squeezing out each and every mile of fuel, but that’s on consumer-level cars with smaller engines. The car we are talking about here is a 5.0L V8, so the fuel economy should be the least of your concerns. The manufacturer’s estimate for the highway is 24 MPG. Lexus is expecting you to drive this car only on highways and not on city roads, pun intended.

Engineers at Mercedes have done some magic tricks to extract that kind of fuel economy from a 4.0L V-8. Mercedes has years of experience in building high-performance cars, and it is expected from them. BMW has traded fuel efficiency for performance, and it is obvious from the above table. The Merc AMG C63 once again takes the crown for range as it has a large fuel tank and that super-efficiency definitely helps to crunch more miles.

2022 Lexus IS 500 F Sport Sedan Interior

4.0/10

Taking the press release images as a reference, we don’t see any sort of changes in the interior for the 2022 IS500. Only one thing is that the bold red interior of the 2021 IS350 is gone, and now it’s all stealth black. The leather-clad doors and dashboard are the same. The flat dashboard design is retained as well as the infotainment screen. The steering wheel is covered in perforated leather for extra grip. The floating dial instrument cluster is still there, but now the engine startup animation would be different.

The front seats are nice and comfortable covered in perforated leather and have all the adjustment options for both driver and passenger. The second row on this car is a little cramped, and on top of that, headroom is quite less due to the sloping roofline. The seats are comfortable though, no worries on that side. The storage options inside the cabin are the usual ones with cup holders on the center console and under armrest storage with power outlets. So overall cabin space on the 2022 Lexus IS500 F Sport should be the same more or less.

*The dimensions of 2021 IS350 used for reference purposes only

The official cargo capacity of the IS500 is still unknown, but as there are no structural changes, we should expect it to be the same as the IS350. With 12 cubic feet of space, it has the smallest trunk space in the segment. The seats can be folded down and the trunk opening is actually very wide. The load lip is quite high on the IS350, and so it might be on the IS500 F Sport. Interior highlights include:

  • Floating dial in the instrument panel
  • Illuminated analog watch
  • Big trackpad for infotainment navigation
  • F Sport Bolstered sport seats
  • F SPORT Performance badging on the Heated Leather-wrapped steering wheel

2022 Lexus IS500 F Sport: Infotainment and Connectivity

The 2022 IS500 will come with a 10.3-inch touch screen with standard support for Android Auto & Apple CarPlay. This is a welcome addition as the Lexus IS350 used to come with an 8.0-inch panel with the option to purchase the 10.3-inch screen.

To control the infotainment screen, there is a big trackpad on the center console with a physical home, menu, and back buttons. This way of navigating the screen is pretty dangerous while driving, so it is better to use steering controls. Interestingly in 2022, we still have a CD player inside the cabin. Infotainment features include:

  • CD Player
  • 10.3-inch touch screen
  • Android Auto & Apple Carplay
  • Voice commands
  • 10 speaker sound system
  • Amazon Alexa support
  • SiriusXM

The IS350 itself has a super aggressive design, and there’s really nothing much to be added. For 2022 MY, IS500 overall design is staying the same except for some minute changes at the back of the car.

The single-port exhaust tip is now replaced with a dual one, and those too are arranged in a unique fashion. The air diffuser at the back is now more aggressive with more fins added to it. The rest of the bodywork is exactly the same as the 2021 IS350.

The BMW M3 offers the largest wheelbase, and it is overall the longest car in the group. Lexus is the shortest vehicle in this segment. Also, the Lexus IS500 F Sport turns out to be the most compact car in terms of dimensions, and it is done with a purpose to give it a more athletic approach. Let's see a few exterior highlights of this new IS500 below:

  • 19-Inch BBS Wheels
  • Hourglass-shaped grille
  • Big bulging hood because of the new V-8
  • Trunk lid spoiler
  • Blacked out Led Tail Light setup

2022 Lexus IS 500 F Sport Sedan Safety

2.0/10

They have been doing this for years now, and for the 2022 IS500 F Sport, Lexus is offering an updated Lexus Safety System+2.5, Lexus’s in-house enhanced safety suite. It comprises of numerous safety and driver-assistance features like:

  • Pre-Collision System (PCS)

  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist

2022 Lexus IS 500 F Sport Sedan Competition

2.0/10

Even the older IS350 F Sport was worth every penny, but it didn’t do well, maybe the V6 engine wasn’t enough for some people. The 2022 IS500 F Sport with its V8 will surely satisfy power-hungry people. The reliability of Lexus comes as a bonus to an already expensive purchase. It all depends on the buyers now, will they be ready to divert from the German powerhouse vehicles to this Japanese engineering masterpiece? Only time will tell. But if you ask us, we would recommend the car if you are fed up with the same old Germans in the segment.
