Detailed Review

Experience Amazing is the tagline of Lexus, which tries to offer the same to its users in its SUV, the 2018 Lexus LX 570. The 570 appears to be a strong contender in the luxury SUV segment amidst competition from the likes of Toyota, Mercedes-Benz and Lincoln.

It gets a 5.7L 32-Valve DOHC V8 engine with an 8-speed Automatic Transmission in it, that produces 383 hp and 403 pound-feet of torque at a rate of 3600 rpm. Its price ranges from $85,380 to $90,380 as the trim upgrades.

It has been a decade-long evolution ever since Lexus launched the LX 570 in 2008 and it is still a continuing process. Lexus offers a wide range of features like Crawl control, multi-terrain select in its 2018 LX 570.

2018 Lexus LX 570 Features

7.8/10

The Lexus is available in two trims viz. the LX 570 2-Row and the LX 570 3-Row. Lexus offers plenty of standard features in both the trims of the LX 570 like Crawl control with turn assist, hill-start assist control, and full-time four-wheel drive with traction control, so on and so forth.

In a luxury perspective, it also offers a luxury package which includes heated and ventilated first and second-row seats, 4-zone climate concierge exclusively available for the 3-row variant.

We recommend

The Lexus LX 570 is a well-equipped car with a lot of standard features in both its trims. While there are some individual options available for a better experience, it is up to the individual’s requirement whether to put that extra $5,000 for a 3-row seating.

2018 Lexus LX 570 Engine

6.0/10

The 2018 Lexus LX 570’s V8 engine delivers plenty of power, though some competitors are quicker. The LX is one of the most capable large luxury SUVs for off-roading, but it gets poor fuel economy estimates for the class. The LX feels relatively composed and comfortable, but expect some body roll through quicker turns. -Cars.usnews.com

Engine and Transmission

The LX 570 has a 5.7L  V8 engine tuned to produce 383 hp and 403 lb-ft of torque under its hood. Its engine feels highly refined and it is fun to drive such a powerful engine with its 8-speed automatic transmission.

The identical SUV and the competitor of the LX 570, the Toyota Land Cruiser hosts the same V8 engine, tuned to deliver a marginally reduced power of 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque, gives an equally good feel of the engine performance. The other rivals, the Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 and the Lincoln Navigator host a 3.0L V6 engine and a 3.5L V6 engine with the Navigator being the most powerful one in terms of sheer power and torque produced.

 Acceleration

The acceleration of the Lexus LX is not so exciting; in fact, it is the slowest to reach 60 mph from 0 mph in the segment for the probable reason of the SUV being the heaviest in the segment. It takes 7.3 sec to get to 60 mph from a standstill position. While both the Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 and Lincoln Navigator takes 6.5 sec in the 0-60 mph test, the GLS 450 wins it over the Navigator in the time taken to complete a quarter mile.

Ride and Handling

Handling the LX 570 is unimpressive with its imprecise steering which seems to be a hindrance to the stability and steadiness of the car. But it is not the worst either. The SUV is loaded with a lot of features with the aim to offer its users a top-class ride quality and comfort. The crawl control with turn assist is of great use while going off-road which helps the SUV adjust to a challenging terrain automatically and also tighten the turning circle by applying brake force to the inside rear wheel.

Braking

With a technically sound braking system on paper, the SUV stands third in practicality and in terms of braking. It takes 123 ft to come down to standstill from a speed of 60 mph while its rival, the GLS 450 tops the list with 120 ft. It is noteworthy to observe that the Land Cruiser which is identical to the LX 570 takes 121 ft to do so.

2018 Lexus LX 570 Fuel Economy

6.4/10

One cannot expect great fuel efficiency from the SUV, given the fact that it is a huge car with a powerful engine. It offers the least fuel economy in the segment with 13 mpg city, 18 mpg highway and a 15-mpg combined. Mercedes tops the list in the class in terms of fuel economy closely followed by Navigator.

2018 Lexus LX 570 Interior

6.4/10

The 2018 Lexus LX’s interior shows its age in some ways. However, the cabin still feels upscale and uses plenty of premium materials. The seats are generally spacious, though the third row is a little cramped (as are most 3-row SUVs). Cargo space is subpar for the class. There’s a lot of infotainment and driver assistance technology, but the Remote Touch infotainment controller is tough to use while driving. -Cars.usnews.com

Seating and Comfort

The front and rear seats are extremely comfortable with ample bolstering, especially in the second row. The leather stitch quality and the wooden material used in the interior of the LX gives the passengers a pleasant feel. The electronically adjustable seats in the second row help the third-row passengers get that extra room for additional comfort. The third-row seats seem to be a bit congested for adults and it is not easy for taller people especially during long car trips.

When compared to its rivals, Lincoln Navigator tops the list while the 570 stands second in the competition in terms of seating and interior space but the important thing to be kept in mind is that the Navigator is a 7-seater vehicle while the Lexus accommodates 8 persons.

Infotainment System

The infotainment system in the Lexus has a 12.3-inch display panel and a built-in navigation system. The system seems to be quite distracting but the infotainment as a whole has got plenty of features which include:

  • Bluetooth
  • Navigation System
  • Lexus Enform Destination Assist
  • Lexus Enform App Suite
  • Siri Eyes Free for hands-free calling and messaging
  • Lexus Enform Remote to remotely access the car
  • Hd Radio With Itunes
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio

Cargo Capacity

The cargo capacity of the LX 570 is not as big as it is expected from looking at its exterior. It is quite disappointing that it has the least cargo capacity in the segment with 15.5 cubic feet behind the 3rd row and 41.0 cubic feet while the 3rd row is folded. Lincoln Navigator tops the list in terms of overall cargo capacity. The only relief to the Lexus is that it manages to get slightly better than the Land Cruiser with 83.1 cubic feet of space behind the 1st row.

2018 Lexus LX 570 Exterior

6.0/10

The 2018 LX 570 wears a face that makes this big brute hard to ignore. Look at the size of that “spindle” grille — it could swallow a Yaris. The rest of the LX 570 is classic Land Cruiser DNA — tall, boxy, imposing. The rear features a clamshell tailgate, with the top portion opening and closing at the push of a button, and below that a manually operated tailgate like that of a pickup truck. -Kelley Blue Book

Dimensions and Weight

The Lexus LX 570 is the heaviest car amongst its rivals with a weight of 6000 lbs, followed by Land Cruiser with 5815 lbs. Since it is equipped with the same chassis as the Land Cruiser, the ground clearance, wheelbase and the width are the same, or almost the same in the LX 570 when compared to the former. But, it is slightly longer than the Land Cruiser with approximately 5 inches more than the Land Cruiser. However, the Navigator is the longest in the segment with 210.0 inches followed by the GLS 450 with 202 inches.

2018 Lexus LX 570 Competition

Lexus LX 570 vs Toyota Land Cruiser

The Land Cruiser and the LX 570 are built on the same platform and the two cars are identical in almost all the aspects except a few cosmetic changes and the difference in brand badges. However, the Land Cruiser has an overall edge over the LX 570 with better price and acceleration.

Lexus LX 570 vs Mercedes-Benz GLS 450

The Mercedes-Benz GLS 450, which has a V6 engine under its hood, clearly wins it over the LX 570 in terms of acceleration, cargo capacity, fuel economy and price. It is certainly dominating the LX 570 in the tech and mechanical aspects as well.

Lexus LX 570 vs Lincoln Navigator

The Navigator is a huge car, leading the segment in almost all the aspects. It has a terrific twin-turbo V6 engine displacing 3.5L in it which unleashes 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. It is a standout vehicle winning over the LX 570 in most of the aspects like performance, fuel economy, cargo space, price etc. The disadvantage with the Navigator is that it is a humongous vehicle and it is not easy to handle it.

2018 Lexus LX 570 Final Verdict

The 2018 Lexus LX 570 is the most expensive car in the class, but that’s not all. You might have to buy some more individual options in order to have fun with it. Instead, if you still wish to get all that the LX 570 offers, you have the Toyota Land Cruiser which is an alternative to the LX 570; in fact, the Land Cruiser costs almost $6,000 less than the LX 570. It is up to the individual to decide if the LX 570 is really a value for money choice; we don’t think it really is.
