Detailed Review

It was long time coming, and finally with the nx 300h, Lexus has made its way in the Luxury hybrid Crossover SUV segment. This car scores on a lot of features and has a quiet and neat cabin. However, if fuel economy is a matter of concern for you, your search starts and ends with this car. All of these make this Lexus a serious contender and compete with the likes of the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, the Nissan Rogue SUV and the Honda CR-V LX.

Starting with a price of around $39,720, the 2017 Lexus nx 300h SUV is definitely pretty expensive than all its rivals despite housing a similar 2.5 liter engine. Although this price might seem too big from a naked eye, but if you go into the technicalities, one gets what it pays for in this car. The amount of features are insane in this Lexus and so is the comfort.

The Lexus nx 300h SUV offers just a single trim currently. It is a all wheel drive with the 2.5 liter 4-cyl engine with a CVT transmission as standard.

The features on offer are the game changer for this car looking at the amount of them on offer, the biggest of them being the Vehicle stability control (VSC).

2017 Lexus NX 300h hybrid Engine

7.0/10

Instead of the NX 200t's punchy and impressively smooth turbocharged performance, the 2017 NX 300h has the sort of languid, droning hybrid driving experience that current owners of Toyota or Lexus hybrids should find familiar. -edmunds

There is not much to choose here as there is just a single trim currently. However, this trim does provide a serious Crossover SUV experience and is definitely recommended.

The Lexus nx 300h SUV is powered by a 2.5 Liter 4-cyl Engine which produces a massive 194 hp of power and 258 lb-ft of torque, which provides all wheel drive with a CVT transmission as standard.

All four rivals are somewhat different in this regard. While the Lexus and the Toyota offer a similar 2.5 liter engine, their power outputs go in opposite directions altogether. The 2.4 liter Honda engine is pretty good in this regard though, with decent figures. Having said that, the Nissan Rogue isn't far off either, with the 2.0 liter engine offering the best torque output among the four.

Acceleration

Let's face it, acceleration has never been a strong point for the Lexus and this one too follows that regard, with the nx 300h taking 9.1 seconds to cover 60 mph, while the quarter mile figures are not known yet.

The Toyota RAV4 definitely turns things around in this segment, with an impeccable 8.0 seconds for 0-60 mph. The Nissan is a close second with 8.4 seconds too, with the Honda just a shade behind.

The Quarter mile column follows a similar pattern, with the Toyota leading the way, with the Nissan and the Honda a little further behind at two and three.

Handling and Steering

If you compare the ride quality of the nx 300h with that of the nx 200t, it would obviously feel quiet languid and irresponsive. The same can be said of the Toyota RAV4 and all other hybrid crossovers in the market though.

Having said that, this car does all the necessary things right. The suspension is very smooth, which leads to ride quality that can be very well compared to that of an Audi or BMW.

The all weather tires too offer a magnificent grip in wet conditions too. It is also very agile around the corners and smooth on the highways.

Braking

The Lexus nx 300h SUV braking figures are not yet known. But it is definitely expected of it to be of in the middle range considering the acceleration it has.

The lightest Honda CR-V definitely is the one with the best brakes in this segment, although, like in the other parameters, the figures of the Toyota and the Nissan are somewhat in the same bracket too.

7.0/10

This is Lexus' territory; it gives a mileage of an insanely high, 34 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. With a combined mpg of 32, this car is a real beast in this regard.

Having said all the good things about the Lexus, one must not forget the Toyota and Nissan. They are quite close, giving similar figures, while the Honda needs some working here with its 28 mpg combined, coming way behind in the pecking order.

  • 8 total speakers
  • USB connection
  • USB with external media control
  • Satellite radio satellite radio

Cargo Volume

The Lexus nx 300h doesn't boast of the best trunk in this segment. However, it nx 300h can easily hold a few duffle bags among others. It has a wide opening with a flat surface, although with a little hump, which is about okay for handling those heavy bags.

Dimension and Weight

The new Lexus nx 300h SUV is the heaviest car in this segment. The dimensions clearly show the amount of space available on the inside.

The tall muscular built adds up to its advantage as well, which seems pretty confident for highway driving. The ground clearance showcases this facet as well. At 6.9 inches above the ground, this car is rightly the one to go on those weekend adventure excursions.

2017 Lexus NX 300h hybrid Competition

Toyota RAV4 Hybrid vs Lexus NX 300h

Although, the Lexus and the Toyota both have a similar engine, their power outputs are completely opposite. The Lexus has better space and comfort on the inside as well. The fuel economy and handling can be called at par, while the Toyota does have a bigger trunk.

However, with a better ride comfort and a better engine output, with a great steering, is the definite winner in this comparison.

Nissan Rogue Hybrid SV vs Lexus NX 300h

The Nissan is the one which genuinely matches the Lexus in many regards. The space inside the Nissan is much better. The braking is better too. The trunk capacity is way too much for the Lexus as well.

However, the Lexus does have a better comfort quality along with a better overall experience. Thus, it is difficult to choose a winner, and this comparison ends even stevens.

Honda CR-V LX vs Lexus NX 300h

The fight between the Lexus and the Honda goes right down to the wire. They have different capacity engines but with a similar output. The fuel economy goes to the Lexus and trunk capacity is where the honda is a clear winner.

However, again like in the case of Toyota, the Lexus does score on all the important aspects of a Crossover SUV and is a deserved winner, although the pricing can be an issue.

2017 Lexus NX 300h hybrid Final Verdict

The 2017 Lexus nx 300h SUV is a serious crossover SUV and does almost everything an SUV is desired for. And is actually a better bet than the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V.

However, the Nissan Rogue does give the Lexus a real run for their money. While the Lexus does have a great engine with massive torque output, pretty good for the highway rides, the Nissan does have a better acceleration and braking. The fuel economy is quite similar and so is the amount of space on the inside.

So, a better SUV with a better ride quality and comfort has to be the Lexus nx 300h, while if money is an issue, a much cheaper variant with a little less features, has to be the Nissan Rogue.
