Bringing out updates on vehicles usually are a nightmare for automakers as it would inadvertently cause a spike in the number of problems and complaints. In contrast to the convention, the Lincoln MKZ has been a vehicle that has been surprisingly the exact opposite, seeing a drop in the number of issues with the facelift. The 2018 Lincoln MKZ has just 1 recall on its name and just 32 complaints as officially recognized by the NHTSA. That said, we do not expect it to stay all good for long as its twin, the Ford Focus, with which it shares its platform, has been raking up a decent number of complaints in recent times. So, should you even consider buying one at a base price of $37,750 instead of sedans like the Acura TLX, the Cadillac CT5, and the Infiniti Q50? This section should help you decide on that.

2018 Lincoln MKZ User Complaints and Problems

Mechanical Complaints

  • Engine- Coolant burning and leaking are some issues that Ford’s 2.0L EcoBoost engine is known for, which is the standard engine on the 2018 Lincoln MKZ. Some owners also complain about head gasket failure on cars with mileages as low as 50,000-miles. Premature exhaust manifold failure is also something to look out for on this engine.
  • Transmission- The 6-speed automatic on the MKZ is subject to occasional hiccups. Owners complain about the vehicle getting stuck between gears. The issue is said to go away once the vehicle is restarted. No error codes were detected by the dealers, dismissing any possible issue even though it is said to occur occasionally. Harshly shifting on manual upshifts and uninterested shifts are also some complaints noticed by users.
  • Service Brake- Low brake pressure along with ABS warning light has been a problem on the 2018 Lincoln MKZ. Owners have noticed a consistent drop in brake feel and stopping ability with the mileage. The issue was found to be with a failing ABS module, which when replaced, resolved the issue.

Electric System complaints

  • Taillights- Water accumulation in rear center tail lights on the 2018 Lincoln MKZ is known to cause a short circuit. While some owners complain about the lamps remaining illuminated every time due to this shorting, others complain about the complete light unit failing to work. Replacement of the center trunk-mounted light does fix the issues.

Structural complaints

  • Steering- Steering assist failure is another issue to look out for on the Lincoln MKZ. Users experience whirring sounds when turning, tight spots when rotating the steering, and also find a visible fluid leak from the pump housing. Premature wearing of pump internals or seals will be the possible reasons for these issues with the latter one necessitating a steering pump replacement.

The steering wheel may detach.

The steering wheel retaining bolt may loosen allowing the steering wheel to detach while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.

Should you buy a used 2018 Lincoln MKZ?

The Lincoln MKZ has always been a niche product in its segment. The facelift last year has done wonders to this car and has made it more desirable than ever with its elegant design and upmarket cabin. The complaints and recall numbers are also the least for any model year, making the 2018 Lincoln MKZ one of the most reliable and appealing model years to own. However, the base prices, though not in direct competition, are a bit too close for comfort to some well-established German luxury sedans and also are higher than its direct competitors making it a hard recommendation for us, to be honest here. But for those who dig what Lincoln has done with this sedan and are willing to stretch their legs a bit farther, the 2018 Lincoln MKZ is not a bad buy by any means.
