Back in the late ‘90s, full-size SUVs were gaining momentum steadily and it was fairly easier for the American brands to make them since the vehicles were based on pickup truck platforms. To compete with the Cadillac Escalade, Ford put its tried and tested F-150’s platform to good use, souped up the Expedition SUV by adding all the bells and whistles available back then, and voila! the Navigator was born.

For the 2015 model year, the Navigator received a facelift which included both interior and exterior design refresh. The powertrain has been downsized to a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 from the previous 5.4-liter V8 but the power and torque output has been increased significantly. The price of the SUV starts at $61,920 and is available in two body styles.

2015 Lincoln Navigator Features

9.0/10

The 2015 Lincoln Navigator is available in a single trim option and two body styles. The extended wheelbase model, Navigator L, offers more rear-seat space and some additional rear-seat entertainment features and is covered in a separate review. Being a premium luxury SUV, the vehicle comes with a long list of standard interior features and almost eliminates the need of opting for an optional package. There is a single optional package, the Reserve Package which includes 22-inch alloy wheels, a two-tone exterior paint scheme, and an adaptive suspension system among other features. Some standalone features include different designed wheels, a sunroof, and a rear-seat entertainment package.

2015 Lincoln Navigator Engine and Performance

7.0/10

The 2015 Lincoln Navigator engine is an all-new 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 unit and comes with Ford’s latest tech to maximize performance while being fuel-efficient. The motor whips out a significantly higher power and torque figures and the numbers are 380 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. With the new turbocharger tech underneath, the motor delivers some exceptional refinement levels and a strong power delivery despite carrying the hefty SUV. The motor is mated to a 6-speed Ford 6R80 automatic transmission and it delivers smooth shifts. Frankly, the previous ZF transmission was better but this is what we get now. The motor propels the SUV in a rather brisk manner with an impressive 0-60mph time of 6.5 seconds and a standing quarter-mile time of 14.9 seconds. When properly equipped, the Navigator can tow a maximum of 9,000 lbs which is one of the best in the segment.

The Cadillac Escalade gets an old-school and massive 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 motor and dishes out a beefy 420 horsepower along with 460 lb-ft of max torque. The torque output is equal to that of the Navigator’s and the acceleration times are also slightly better than the latter as well. The Ford Expedition gets a similar twin-turbo engine to the Navigator but comes in a lower state of tune. Hence, the Expedition takes the longest time to complete both the 0-60mph and the quarter-mile runs.

2015 Lincoln Navigator Fuel Economy

7.0/10

The 2015 Lincoln Navigator gas mileage numbers are rated at 16mpg for city runs, 22mpg out on the highways, and 18mpg of combined mileage. The numbers are decent for a full-size luxury SUV and the fact that the performance and power figures of the Navigator are quite strong as well. With a huge gas tank of 28 gallons, the SUV offers a superb highway driving range of over 600 miles at a single go.

The Cadillac Escalade has lower fuel economy numbers, courtesy of its huge V8 motor and beefy power figures. It also gets a slightly smaller 26 gallons gas tank hence offers a lower overall driving range than both the Navigator and the Expedition. The Ford Expedition has similar fuel economy figures to the Navigator which is on the lower side considering its lower power and torque figures.

2015 Lincoln Navigator Interior

9.0/10

The 2015 Lincoln Navigator interior is the best thing about the SUV. It got an extensive redesign and now sports a proper luxurious look and feel. There is just an abundance of space inside the cabin and the third-row seats do have a proper headroom and legroom for tall adults. The cabin is laid out with premium materials and high-quality leather upholstery along with soft-touch materials covering almost every exposed surface. The dashboard gets a practical and elegant design with neatly placed controls while the steering wheel has a similar design to the Ford Expedition’s steering wheel. Both the front and 2nd-row seats offer supreme comfort levels with the front row seats getting an 8-way power-adjustable function along with heating and ventilation as well. Getting in and out of the vehicle is a breeze with the power-retractable running boards. Behind the 3rd-row seats, the cargo capacity is massive at 54.4 cu-ft and it can be extended to a huge 103 cu-ft by folding the seats.

The Cadillac Escalade offers an even more spacious cabin than the Navigator with a segment-leading headroom for the front seats. It has a slightly lower cargo capacity than the Navigator measuring 51.6 cu-ft. The Ford Expedition has similar interior dimensions to the Navigator but its luxury appointments are lesser than what you find inside the Navigator.

Some interior features:

  • Heated and ventilated front seats with 8-way power adjustments
  • Dual-zone automatic climate controls with rear-seat controls
  • Premium leather upholstery
  • Interior ambient lighting
  • Power-adjustable pedals

How intuitive is the 2015 Lincoln Navigator’s infotainment unit?

The 2015 Lincoln Navigator gets a standard 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display with the MyLincoln Touch user interface. The system is smooth and feature-rich but gets tricky to use while driving. There is also the Sync voice command system that comes in handy while on the move.

Some infotainment features of the Navigator are:

  • Sync voice command system
  • Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity
  • Navigation system
  • 14-speaker surround-sound audio system
  • HD radio
  • USB/iPod interface

2015 Lincoln Navigator Exterior

7.0/10

The 2015 Lincoln Navigator exterior gets its much-needed premium appeal with Lincoln’s new “split-wing” front grille design. At the rear, the SUV gets full-length tail lights and looks a bit polarizing. Apart from these, the exterior gets some tasteful chrome detailings and inserts which look quite reflective but are nowhere near being “too much” like the Escalade. The side profile is neat with no unnecessary design bits and the 20-inch wheels gels in perfectly with the vehicle.

The Cadillac Escalade has an outlandish exterior design with a heavy dose of chrome bits everywhere. From the front end, the Navigator looks way better than the Caddy while the rear end of the latter has a better look snd feel than the Navigator. The Ford Expedition sports a rather ordinary and boring design especially at the front end but matches evenly with the Navigator in terms of dimensions.

Some exterior features are:

  • High-intensity discharge headlamps with LED signature lamps
  • LED daytime running lamps
  • 20" Ultra Bright-Machined Aluminum wheels
  • 22" Polished Aluminum wheels (Reserve)
  • Tuxedo Black Metallic power-retractable running boards
  • Rear privacy glass

2015 Lincoln Navigator Safety

The NHTSA gave the vehicle a perfect 5-star crash rating, further establishing its superior safety stats. Some of the standard safety techs include stability and traction control, trailer sway control, front-seat side airbags, three-row side curtain airbags, a post-crash alert system, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Some standout features are:

  • AdvanceTrac with RSC
  • Perimeter anti-theft alarm
  • Safety Canopy System with 3-row side-curtain airbags and rollover sensor
  • SecuriLock Passive Anti-Theft System
  • SOS Post-Crash Alert System

2015 Lincoln Navigator Final Verdict

The Lincoln Navigator is all set to give the segment rivals a tough time with its all-new design and even more luxurious interior with a plethora of features on offer. It also gets a significant performance improvement and qualifies as a practical luxury vehicle with huge cargo space and a maximum towing capacity of 9,000 lbs. Overall, the Navigator is the one to go for if you’re fond of big American SUVs and want an alternative to the German rivals in the segment.
