Detailed Review

Massive is the term you would use to define any of these. Larger than full-size SUVs, almost as large as fans, the 2017 Lincoln Navigator has a stately presence unmatched by none. It promises to be luxurious and haul people in utmost comfort quite literally like a palace.

The Navigator comes with a 3.5L, twin-turbocharged, V6 engine which develops 380 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. it drives either the rear wheels or all four wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission and its price starts at $63,195 and goes up to well over $70,000 for the long wheelbase fully loaded version.

As a full-size SUV, and a luxurious one as Lincoln would like to call it, the Navigator goes against the Cadillac Escalade, Mercedes Benz GLS, and the Land Rover Range Rover. These cars are priced and specked similarly and the Navigator is going to have quite a hard time against these handsome hunks.

2017 Lincoln Navigator Engine

7.6/10

“In 2015, Lincoln ditched the V-8 that had powered the Navigator for a generation. It replaced it with a stronger, better, nominally more efficient twin-turbo V6, and as a result the Navigator's never been better to drive”-The Car Connection

Engine and Transmission

A 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 engine that puts out 380 horsepower and 460-pound-feet of torque powers the Navigator. A six-speed automatic transmission and rear wheel drive come standard while a light duty four-wheel drive system comes optional.

While the 380 ponies on the Navigator feels impressive, it was the Caddy who brought the trophy. Its 420 hp of raw power eliminates the competitors big time.

Acceleration

The Navigator feels aggressively quick. It weighs more than 6,000 pounds, but it posts 0 to 60 in less 6 seconds and is one of the fastest full-size SUV in its class. The Navigator gets tough competition from the Cadillac Escalade which crosses the 60 mph mark in 5.8 seconds and is the second fast in the class.

Braking and Handling

The Navigator is a highway cruiser with plenty of power swift acceleration. It gets the best handling than any other large SUV in the class. Be ready for heavy nosedive and lots of body roll during quick stops. The four-wheel independent suspension, however, helps provide a smooth ride and this is one enormous SUV that maneuvers with some degree of precision on a winding road.

In terms of braking, the 2017 Lincoln Navigator fails to impress as it gets the worst stopping power of 132 feet. Escalade despite being the second heaviest in the class offers impressive braking distance. It takes 119 feet to come to a halt from 60 to 0.

Towing Capacity

With a towing capacity of 9,000 pounds, the Navigator makes for a good choice for weekend towing. The Cadillac Escalade and the Land Rover respectively max out at 8,300 and 7,500 pounds.

Towing Capacity(lbs) 9000 8300 7500 7716

The Navigator's 9000-pound muscle can easily outpower its competitors. The other SUV's like the Range Rover was left powerless. The Mercedes GLS featured the lowest towing prowess.

2017 Lincoln Navigator Fuel Economy

6.1/10

Navigator gets an EPA rating of 15 mpg city, 21 mpg highway and 17 mpg combined when fitted with rear wheel drive. With the four-wheel drive, the highway number drops to 20. Extended wheelbase Navigator meanwhile checks in with 15/20/17 mpg with rear-wheel drive and 15/19/16 mpg with 4WD.

MPG (city) 15 14 19 17
MPG (highway) 21 23 22 23
MPG (combined) 17 17 19 19

The Navigator will give you a lot of perks but the efficiency is not one of them. The SUV delivers a 17 mpg mileage which is the least in the lot. Other competitors like the GLS and the Range Rover both display a 19 mpg mileage.

2017 Lincoln Navigator Interior

9.3/10

"Fine leather and wood impress, as does comfortable seating that includes good legroom, especially in LWB models. Overall, interior space is good, but maybe not quite as good as the expansive exterior may suggest"- KBB

Seating and Comfort

The Navigator sits seven people however you get the option to increase total seating capacity to eight by swapping out the second-row bucket seats for a bench seat. One of the main highlights of the Navigator is the third-row space that stands at 37.7 inches which no other vehicle in the class offers.

The standard bucket seats in the second row get a lower and upper anchor for installing child safety seats. Swap out the bucket seat with the bench and you get another upper and lower LATCH anchor in the second row.

Infotainment

The Navigator gets Ford's SYNC 3 infotainment system which is easy to use and intuitive. Smartphone integration like the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay has been made available for 2017. The new system is designed similarly as a smartphone, you can gesture such as pinch to zoom or swipe.

Cargo Space

There is no competition when it comes to cargo space as the 2017 Lincoln Navigator leads the segment with a total of 103 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats folded. There is 18.1 cubic feet of space behind the third row and 54.4 cubic feet with them folded. Step up to the Navigator L and you get a whopping 128.2 cubic feet of cargo space.

2017 Lincoln Navigator Exterior

7.0/10

"The 2017 Lincoln Navigator's massive split grille is unmistakably Lincoln, even as the brand's signature look morphs with the new Continental and MKZ. Still, there's no disguising that this is a big, imposing box"- KBB

Dimension and Weight

Measure your garage before buying the Navigator. At 207.4 inches it is one of the largest SUVs in its class. The long wheelbase Navigator L goes even further and stands at 222.3 inches in length. It is also the tallest vehicle in the competition and gets a good ground clearance of 8.4 inches.

2017 Lincoln Navigator Competition

Lincoln Navigator Vs Cadillac Escalade

The Escalade is the only full-size SUV that compares to the Navigator in terms of cargo space and towing capacity. There is a plethora of passenger space in both these SUVs plus you also get each in long wheelbase. Navigator although gives you more power with its fuel-efficient V8 engine along with the luxurious interior.

The Navigator does not quite match up against this German rival in terms of luxury quotient or refinement. The Mercedes has far better interiors, looks better too and has more tech features as well. Other than the size of the Navigator and the stately stance that comes along with it, there is nothing that comes up the class of the GLS. Also, the GLS is cheaper and that should pretty much help you boil down to your choice.

Lincoln Navigator vs Land Rover Range Rover

The Navigator does not match up the class of the Range Rover either. The Range Rover is quite the epitome of how a luxury SUV is to be like and even though it quite expensive than the Navigator, it justifies every bit of that premium with its high-quality materials, great looks, tech features and off-road capability quite unmatched by the others. It certainly not as huge as the Navigator but it sufficient to get those heads turned.

2017 Lincoln Navigator Final Verdict

The Navigator is a good stately SUV built on the platform of Ford trucks and hence it does not have the sense of luxury as its European counterparts. It's a fast SUV and surprisingly so considering its weight and dimensions but it's that perfect.

The rivals are more luxurious and look better, have way more technology and have better brand value as well. Yes, it's massive but that about it. If size is the only concern one may as well buy a luxury van instead of this but for a full-size luxury SUV, the world has certainly better to offer.
