Lincoln’s all SUV lineup is topped off with the 2022 Navigator. While the Navigator L share’s its underpinnings with a Ford Expedition and is the extended wheelbase version of the regular Navigator, it is much more than a Ford Expedition with plush leather seats and a higher price tag. It is powered by a 440 hp twin-turbo V6 which allows the Navigator L’s heavy-duty ability to shine through, by helping it tow something which weighs as much as 8,700 lbs. And that is something that set’s the Navigator L apart from the much more premium brand full-size SUVs.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

With the 2022 update, the Lincoln Navigator L is a step closer to the perfect full-size premium SUV. It comes with an ActiveGlide system which makes the vehicle semi-autonomous now and gets various other interior updates along with the tweaks to the exterior design. The extended wheelbase Navigator L is estimated to start at an MSRP of $88,000, about $8,000 more than the standard wheelbase, and would be much higher than its rival’s other full-size SUVs like the Audi Q7, BMW X7, Cadillac Escalade ESV, and the Mercedes-Benz GLS 450

The 2022 Navigator L should continue to be offered with only the Reserve and Black Label trims with no base trim on offer. The Reserve trims will be offered with both the rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive drivetrains and come loaded with tons of modern-day safety features and creature comforts to make it feel every bit worth the high asking price. The Black Label trim, on the other hand, gets extra premium features like 18-way adjustable massaging seats, a 360-degree camera, and a 20-speaker surround-sound system amongst many other features.

Which trim should you buy?

Though the Black Label trim makes the Navigator feel plush and a lot more premium than the lower Reserve trim, the prices rise exponentially taking it into the six-figure territory and hence we recommend going with the Reserve trim. One can also opt for the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow package which maximizes the trailer towing capacity of 8700 lbs.

Release Date

Lincoln and Ford haven't really taken the covers off all the details of the Navigator yet and as per reports, it should be launched only in the last quarter of 2021.

Engine and Performance

The 2022 Lincoln Navigator L comes standard with a 3.5L twin-turbocharged V6 engine under its hood, producing 440 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a ten-speed automatic transmission which powers the rear wheels as standard, with the 4WD being available as well. Although it does lose out on 10 horses as compared to the 2021 model year, on the flip side, the engine is more efficient now.

2022 Lincoln Navigator L SUV In Acceleration Mode

The engine boasts of a maximum of 8,700 lbs of towing capacity with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow package while as standard it can tow up to 6,600 lbs. The acceleration performance is pretty sweet as well with abundant power and torque reserves available at the dab of the pedal. The Navigator L can do the 0-60 mph sprint in just 5.3 seconds while the quarter-mile drag strip is covered in a blistering quick 13.8 seconds.

The Navigator L boasts of 7 drive modes, which sharpen or numb the steering and throttle response and have terrain control that aids the driver in sticky situations. The 2022 Lincoln Navigator L might hold its ground in a straight line, but it loses out in the turns. The steering is numb and the heft of the car makes itself felt when taking a turn. The Navigator L does not encourage enthusiastic driving of any sort. The larger 22-inch wheels do seem special and look good on the car, but it does not aid the handling of the vehicle. It makes the ride quality harsh and highlights the suspension rebound after tackling a bump.

Out of the four, we are comparing here, it is clear that the Lincoln Navigator L has the advantage when it comes to sheer power, but it is also the priciest one here. The Cadillac Escalade and the Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 have similar performance in the straight line, despite the difference in power, but they still lose out to the top dogs of the performance test, marginally. The BMW X7 is the slowest one here but is also the most affordable SUV in its class and offers superior driving dynamics.

Fuel Economy

The 2022 Navigator L is undoubtedly an extremely thirsty SUV in spite of the turbocharged engine and the marginally lower power output for this year. And it remains so, no matter how you drive it. The economy is considerably lower than the competition which can be blamed on the higher curb weight. The EPA rates it for 18 mpg combined for the rear-wheel-drive while the 4-wheel drive drivetrain reduces it further by 1 mpg in each aspect. The 27-gallon fuel tank comes in handy as it offers over 450 miles of driving range.

In comparison, the Cadillac Escalade ESV has even lower fuel economy figures than the Navigator L and hence employs a larger gas tank to compensate for the driving range. Both the BMW and Mercedes are far more frugal than the Americans and offer about 21 mpg combined fuel efficiency, in spite of offering all-wheel drive as standard. The GLS 450 has a larger fuel tank capacity than the X7 and hence also offers the best driving range in this segment.

Now we come to the interior of the 2022 Lincoln Navigator L which is its forte. And no matter how we look at it, and what trim it is, it is very lavishly spacious and luxuriously seats 7 passengers. It is loaded with features and premium soft-touch materials like the open-pore wood trim and the premium leather-clad surfaces everywhere around the cabin. The Reserve trim comes with the Panoramic Vista roof that changes the look and feel of the interior to an even more upscale one.

Apart from the Venetian Leather seat upholstery, there are the leather-upholstered dashboard and door trims offered as standard. There are tasteful chrome inserts in the cabin and even the headliner comes with a Dinamica Simulated Suede. There are power-adjustable pedals offered as standard along with memory for everything from front seats, steering column, door mirrors, pedals, audio system, and even the HVAC.

There is no shortage of space anywhere in the cabin with even the third row of seats offering over 40-inch of legroom. The front and middle row of seats is the most spacious but adults can be rather comfortable back in the third row as well. The front seats can be adjusted in every possible way and come with heating, ventilation, and massaging functions. The second row offers heating and manual reclining and fore/aft adjustability.

Both the second and third row of seats get power fold into the floor function which folds the seats flat into the floor if you need to extend the already spacious 36 cu-ft of luggage space behind the third row of seats. Folding it down opens up around 80 cu-ft of cargo space which can be extended to a maximum of 120 cu-ft by folding down the second row as well. Apart from that, there are plenty of power outlets and storage pockets around the cabin to cater to the needs of every individual in the car.

The Navigator L is no doubt the most spacious one in this comparison with there being acres of space inside its cabin. At the front, the Escalade is pretty spacious and offers more headroom and legroom than even the Navigator L, But the third row is no match to the Lincoln. The Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 offers a pretty decent amount of space in all three rows with the BMW X7 feeling the most compact here. That being said, the Mercedes has the smallest cargo capacity on offer where the Cadillac takes the center stage. Some of the interior features in the 2022 Lincoln Navigator L are:

  • 22-Way Bucket Heated/Ventilated and Massaging Front Seats w/power lumbar and driver and passenger seat memory
  • Folding Bucket Heated Manual Reclining Fold Forward Venetian Leather Rear Seat w/Manual Fore/Aft and PowerFold Power Fold Into Floor
  • Fixed 60-40 Split-Bench Venetian Leather Third Row Seat w/Power Recline & Power Fold Into Floor

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The gorgeous-looking 10-inch screen has now been bumped to a 13.2-inch head unit for the 2022 model year. The car is centered around this large touchscreen which sits at the center of the dashboard and has voice recognition functionality. The SYNC 3 system comes standard with Android Auto and Apple Carplay and also features Ford’s AppLink connectivity. The second row also comes with its own 5.8-inch touchscreen from which the passengers can adjust the climate control along with the audio.

2022 Lincoln Navigator L SUV Infotainment System

The navigation system features voice commands and Lincoln also offers a six-year subscription for SiriusXM Traffic & Travel Link. For the rear-seat entertainment, the rear seat features a 10.1-inch touchscreen with wireless headphones along with wireless streaming via Amazon Fire TV and voice controls. The highlighting feature is the 28-speaker Revel Ultima Sound System which is an optional extra but even without the 28 speakers, the audio quality is unparalleled. That being said, the standard 14-speaker or 20-speaker Revel audio system does not disappoint in any which way. Some of the infotainment features in the 2022 Lincoln Navigator L are:

  • 13.2 SYNC 3 Communications & Entertainment infotainment system
  • 20-speaker Revel Ultima enhanced active noise control surround sound system
  • Voice-Activated Navigation System w/6-year prepaid subscription of SiriusXM Traffic & Travel Link
  • Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and AppLink compatibility
  • Lincoln Connect 4G Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • Lincoln-Way app remote features
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio
  • Bluetooth Wireless Phone Connectivity and Streaming Audio

For 2022, the Lincoln Navigator L features a bold design which is certainly an evolution more than a revolution. It features a reworked grille and a more elegant lower fascia. The dual LED DRLs complement the bold look of the vehicle and have an amazing visual appeal.

The tail lamps have been reworked and now they are full width which makes the car look cleaner and takes your eyes away from the height of the vehicle.

The Navigator L looks the part in the 2022 MY and offers a perfect blend between luxury and style with comfort taking the center stage. The Escalade ESV is the largest vehicle in this comparison while the BMW X7 is the most compact in terms of exterior dimensions and hence is also the lightest one here. The Mercedes has a much lower ride height to offer while the Lincoln offers the highest ground clearance which is just marginally more than the Caddy. Some of the exterior features in the 2022 Lincoln Navigator L are:

  • Automatic Projector Beam LED Daytime Running, Auto-Leveling, Directionally Adaptive, Auto High-Beam Headlamps
  • LED Brakelights
  • Power Liftgate and Lip Spoiler
  • Powered Illuminated Running Boards
  • Speed Sensitive Rain Detecting Variable Intermittent Wipers w/Heated Wiper Park
  • Chrome Power Heated Side Mirrors w/Tilt Down, Driver Auto Dimming, Power Folding, and Turn Signal Indicator
  • Chrome Grille, Door Handles, Bodyside Moldings, and Side Windows Trim
  • Express Open/Close Sliding And Tilting Glass Panoramic Vista Roof Sunroof w/Power Sunshade
  • 22-inch 21-Spoke Bright Machined Aluminum Wheels w/dark tarnish painted pockets

The 2022 Lincoln Navigator L performs well in the crash tests which is not a surprise as it shares the chassis with the Ford Expedition and its truck counterpart the Ford F-150. It gets a perfect 5-star overall crash rating from the NHTSA while the IIHS is yet to test it for the 2021 model year. For the 2022 model year, Lincoln has introduced the optional ActiveGlide semi-autonomous driving system which aids on the safety front apart from the extra-long list of safety and driver assistance features that are already on offer. Some of the standout safety features are as follows:

  • AdvanceTrac Electronic Stability Control (ESC) And Roll Stability Control (RSC)
  • Active Park Assist Plus Automated Front and Rear Parking Sensors
  • Blind Spot Detection and Trailer Coverage Blind Spot
  • Front Collision Mitigation
  • Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking and Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Driver Monitoring-Alert
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane-keeping assist and Lane departure warning system
  • 360-degree View Aerial View Camera System
  • Mykey System

2022 Lincoln Navigator L vs 2022 Cadillac Escalade

The Cadillac Escalade is the most formidable competitor in this class. It has established its presence over the years and has refined itself. But it misses out like the interior of the Navigator L is certainly a better place to be in, for which one needs to shell much more money.

2022 Cadillac Escalade

The driving experience is arguably better in the Escalade, as it handles really well when considering its size and the fact that it is still a body-on-frame chassis. But the Lincoln does better on paper as its stability control system is certainly more restrictive than the Cadillac’s.

2022 Lincoln Navigator L vs 2022 BMW X7 40i

The BMW provides a great interior and amazing performance for the price which gives stiff competition to the Navigator L. But by no means is it a match when the practicality is considered, as most of its rivals are bigger and more luxurious.

2022 BMW X7 40i

And neither is the X7 as comfortable as the Navigator L due to its sporty nature. Though there are no shortage of amenities with the BMW, it just falls short in front of the American royalty

2022 Lincoln Navigator L vs 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450

The Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 4Matic is a beautiful car that provides a lot of grandeur, and it is a strong contender to the Navigator L as a lot of people prefer a GLS in the class. But it is not nearly as practical as the Navigator L, as it is just as fast with a much lower curb weight.

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450

And the reduced practicality will make one compromise massively on the second and third-row space. Then again the premium list of creature comforts and amenities offered by Lincoln is unparalleled.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Lincoln Navigator L is a beautiful SUV to look at and a treat to drive long distances in. It is a full-size, premium luxury SUV with three rows and a barely six-figure price tag and has the best features when it comes to the competition. Lincoln has made sure to take the word luxury seriously because it has clearly applied the word in perfect context in all three rows of the vehicle. The ActiveGlide feature, which makes the vehicle semi-autonomous might be the highlighting feature for the 2022 model year but the subtle refinements actually make the Navigator L a lot better to drive and to spend time in.
