Electric cars have been making headlines these days with some earth-shattering numbers giving their air-breathing-coal-burning counterparts a run for their money. Lucid Motors, with their latest entrant, the 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition is taking things even further by pushing out an 1111 horsepower all-wheel-drive 4-door family sedan, which is just insane. The 2022 Dream edition will come in as a limited run trim and will include updated exterior color pallets, wheels, interior/exterior trims, and most importantly, more power.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

For 2022, the Lucid Air Dream edition will be made available in two trims- ‘P’, which stands for performance, and the ‘R’ trim, which stands for range. The base prices of this special edition will start at $169,000 for both the ‘Range’ and the ‘Performance’ variant. Federal tax credits do apply to this model and the effective prices would go down to around $161,000 depending on the state. At such high starting prices, the 2022 Lucid Air Dream edition will be competing against the similarly insane Tesla Model S Plaid and the sophisticated Porsche Taycan Turbo S.

2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition Sedan Features

The 2022 Lucid Air dream edition will be made available in two trims as already mentioned. The range trim will come in slightly detuned and will put down a puny 933hp to save some juice and keep you rolling over 500 miles on a single charge. The second trim is the performance variant, which goes all-out crazy with the numbers with peak horsepower numbers rated at about 1111hp. You will be compromising range though on this one, topping out at just over 450 miles on a single charge. The main catch is that the two trim would be priced almost identically and it is you the one, left with the choice.

Being the top-of-the-line trims in the Lucid Air series, Bothe the cars would come packing all the standard features. For starters, the exterior gets an all-new variant-specific eureka Gold paint. The 21-inch wheels get a new design while the full glass canopy and platinum polish C-pillars get carried over from the regular lineup. Full Nappa leather dual-tone upholstery with American Walnut interior inserts come as standard with this edition. A 34-inch high resolution floating screen, Premium special audio system, semi-active dampers, DreamDrive driver assistance package, and 3 years of complimentary charging with Electrify America also come in a part of the standard package.

Which trim should you buy?

The Lucid Air dream edition is a limited Edition Run vehicle, so getting your hand on one would be the primary priority here. You only get two trims with the range and output only being the differentiating criteria between them. Going for the range trim means that you would be compromising on power while on the Power trim, the exact vise-versa. Since the aforementioned trims come in limited numbers, you could only avail one through the reservation, and well, good luck getting one cause by the time you read this the slots would already have been filled.

2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition Release date

Configurators have already come online on Lucid and booking for the Dream Edition works only on reservations. If you are lucky enough to get hold of one, expect delivery through the third quarter of this year or the first quarter of the coming year.

2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition Sedan Engine and Performance

Lucid employs a pair of Dual Active core AC permanent magnet motors mounted on both axles to drive the car. The motors are rated for a combined output of over 1111hp while the peak torque the motors spin up is rated at 1025 lb-ft. All of this muscle power translates into a rear world acceleration figure of about 2.5 secs which is plain insanity. There are no instances of any road-going gas-powered sports car posting such low numbers and the 4-door Lucid Air doing all this with its claimed 5050-pound curb weight is just otherworldly.

2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition Sedan driving view

On the 2022 Lucid Air Dream edition, the power gets sent to all four wheels with a single-speed direct drive system. The car does get 3 drive settings and the output varies with them as well. In the Smooth and Swift modes, the peak power outputs get restricted to 804 hp, while the torque output is rated at 670lb-ft and 738 lb-ft respectively for the two modes. On the full-blown Sprint mode, the motor unleashes itself, pumping out nearly 1111 hp and 885 lb-ft of torque with the torque figures peaking out at 1025 lb-ft during launches.

Though the output numbers seem to favor the Lucid, the lightweight Tesla Models S Plaid with its ludicrous launch control system absolutely walks the competition claiming a 0-60 time of just 1.99 seconds on a prepped surface with the one-foot rollout. Even if you take these factors away, the Tesla manages to post a 60 time of 2.28 seconds and a quarter-mile in 9.25 secs, which still is a far cry for the competition. The Porsche Taycan Turbo S, being the heaviest and least powered car here, manages to clock a 60 mph sprint in 2.6 secs which is not all that far off from competition but falls behind in the quarter-mile run crossing it at 11.3 seconds.

How well does the 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition handle?

Driving around a 5000-pound 4-door electric car does not sound all that fun. But, in reality, the Lucid Air will surprise you with its agility and that too, quite a bit. The first thing that would shock you would be the amount of thrust that you get when you press the throttle. No other car that you have ever been in would feel this frightening unless you have already driven the Plaid. On the straights, the Lucid Air Dream edition feels more or less rear-wheel driven but once you hit some winding bits, you can feel the electronic gizmos intervening and shuffling drive between the axles to find the best traction.

2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition Sedan ride and handling

The Pirelli 245/265 summer tire combo keeps the car planted through the corners and the perfectly weighted steering keeps the nose where you need it to be. The low set battery pack aids in lowering the center of gravity and does help keep the car close to the road. The semi-active dampers do keep body movements mostly in check and the electronic torque vectoring system makes sure that you dive into the corners fast without losing the feel or traction on the tail end. Most of these electronic systems and the suspension would go through one final step of tuning before it hit the customers, so we expect the dynamics to get even better.

2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition Braking Performance

We don’t have any official measurements or details about the braking hardware on the 2022 Lucid Air Dream edition, but the car actually stops quite well for all the weight it carries. The pedal does lack that mechanical feel and there is a bit of sponginess to it. The brakes do feel progressive and the car sheds speed rather quickly. The electronic traction system keeps everything in control but we would rate the overall system just average based on our initial thoughts.

The Porsche undoubtedly with its big 16.5/16.1 carbon-ceramic rotors and 10-piston front brake calipers gets the best stopping hardware here. That shows in the performance as well, coming to a complete halt in just 103 feet despite being the heaviest one in this comparison. The Porsche also has a more consistent feel and performance when it comes to braking. The Tesla comes in just short at 104 feet with the 300-pound weight advantage coming in its favor. The Lucid does perform well on its own but we seriously doubt its ability to outperform the competition.

2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition Sedan Fuel Economy

The 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition does claim to be one of the most efficient electric cars of the time. It boasts a minimum range of 450 miles for the Performance trim while the Range trim pushes the figure even further to 503 miles. As far as we know, this is one of the highest claims by any manufacturer as of now and the astonishing fact is that they made it possible with a 113 kW-hr battery which is not all that too big from the competition. With a claimed peak charging speed of 300 miles in 20 minutes, you are pretty much looking at the best electric vehicle option here.

The 2022 Lucid Air gets a clear win over here. Sporting the biggest battery in this comparison, the Lucid Air pulls ahead by 54 miles to the Tesla. In comparison, the Porsche, despite having a lower rated power output and a decent sized battery pack, falls to the back of the pack with a dismal 201 miles maximum range which is less than or close to half of what the competition claims. The Lucid Air Dream Edition in the Range trim does almost 503 miles on a single charge, which we think is quite a bold claim for not that big of a difference in battery size from the competition.

2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition Sedan Interior

The insides of the 2022 Ludic Air Dream Edition is as futuristic as it gets. A big digital screen reigns the entire cockpit with more of a driver-centric layout. Every touchpoint is made of the finest material and the seats as standard come wrapped in fine quality dual tone Nappa leather. The only physical control you would find in the cabin would be on the steering wheel and central instant toggle buttons, both of which are finished in high-quality brushed aluminum. A slanted retractable pilot panel takes the lower half of the center console, housing much of the HVAC controls, placed conveniently from the driver’s seats.

2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition Sedan cockpit area

Talking about seats, the ones on the offer a lot of adjustment and feel really supportive. There is 5833 inches of shoulder room and 45.5 inches of legroom on offer at the front so that an occupant of any size could fit in without any big troubles. The second row also offers a seating capacity of 3 and the 35.8 inches of legroom does offer the occupants more freedom. Unlike gas-powered cars, electric cars usually come with two storage compartments, one in the place where the engines usually go. At the so-called frunk, the Lucid Air offers 7.1 cu-ft of space while the rear gets a huge 16.1 cu-ft trunk which is pretty sizable.

Even though the 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition is not the longest car in this comparison, it has managed to excavate the best usable room in the cabin. It offers the best legroom on both the rows while the rest of the dimension more or less falls in line with the competition. The Tesla, owing to its long silhouette manages to pack in the best cargo capacity measuring in at a total of over 28 cu-ft. The Lucid falls second with a combined capacity of just over 23 cu-ft. while the Porsche has to do with 16 cu-ft of overall capacity. Some interior features on the 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition are;

  • Dual-tone Nappa leather upholstery
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel with touch-sensitive controls
  • American Walnut and brushed aluminum cabin inserts
  • Power front seats.
  • Pilot touch-panel for climate controls
  • Heated seats

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition comes with a floating style 34-inch 5k resolution screen that stretches across from the driver side pillar to the center of the cabin. The screen is divided into three sections with the extreme left display controlling basic lighting, wiper, and lock functions, the center one displaying the necessary driver information and turn-by-turn navigation while the third display works as the infotainment screen. This wrap-around style display puts information right at your eyeliner but chances are that it could get a bit distracting at night.

The infotainment screen includes real-time navigation and support for phone connectivity features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Alexa voice assistant feature is inbuilt and the entire system is eligible for over-the-air software updates as per Lucid's claim. The media system comes coupled with a 21 speaker Surreal Sound premium audio system with support for Dolby Atmos. Steering mounted infotainment controls also come in as a part of the package. Some standout infotainment features on the 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition are;

  • 34-inch 5K Floating screen
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality.
  • Amazon Alexa Voice assistant
  • 21-speaker Surreal Sound premium audio system
  • Navigation system with turn-by-turn indication
  • Over-the-air software updates

2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition Sedan Exterior

This is the part where the opinions about the2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition start conflicting. Well, we would say the design did come out rather bold than outright elegant. It is definitely striking and eye-grabbing but doesn’t cut it for us. The flat nose and the horizontal chrome strip hiding the slim LED headlamps look too plain in our eyes. Similar is the case with the tail section as well with curved glass extending a bit too far from the C-pillar, distorting the proportions from the side.

2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition Sedan

The big 21-inch Aero Dream Edition wheels and the brushed metal inserts that extend from the C-pillar do add a bit of flair to an otherwise mundane silhouette. The glass canopy essentially raises the premium appeal of the car and also does elevate the cabin feel. The chrome lining around the base of the car cuts the taper towards the base and makes the car look low-slung giving it a proper stance.

The Tesla is the longest car here and unboundedly the king of practicality in this comparison offering the largest cargo area. It is also the lightest car here making it the performance champ as well. Even Though the Lucid Air falls short in wheelbase it is the car that offers the best cabin space in this comparison. Thirdly, the Porsche does fall short in every dimension and yet comes out as the heaviest car in this bunch.

When it comes to outright performance, the Tesla Model S Plaid stands in a league of its own.
