Maserati cars are all about exclusivity. The Maserati Ghibli lineup consists of the base Ghibli, the Ghibli S and S Q4 along with the more powerful Ghibli Trofeo. We’ll be looking at the Ghibli S and Ghibli S Q4 here as they are basically the same machine, but the S is standard RWD whereas the S Q4 is AWD. The Ghibli S trims come with the same engine as the base model but have significantly more power. The Ghibli comes with some very exclusive features with peculiar names like the Zegna Pelletessuta leather-trimmed seats.

For 2021 the Ghibli S comes with some significant changes over the last year’s model including a revamped exterior with changes done to the front and rear fascia. The infotainment unit has also been upgraded to a 10.1-inch touchscreen unit from last year’s 8.4-inch one. The Ghibli S is available in three distinct trim lines with the same engine under the hood and the same power outputs. AWD is also available with all trims. The 2021 Maserati Ghibli S competes with the Mercedes-Benz AMG E 53 4Matic, BMW M550i xDrive, and the Audi S6 Premium Plus.

2021 Maserati Ghibli S Sedan Features

The 2021 Maserati Ghibli S comes in three trim options. The base S trim itself is properly equipped and comes with a superb list of features. The other two trims are named GranLusso and GranSport which are more like extensive packaging that focuses on enhancing different aspects of the Ghibli S. The Granlusso trim makes the base version more luxurious adding special touches all around.

The GranSport as the name suggests is the more sporty proposition that comes with performance-enhancing features including a Skyhook performance suspension with electronic damping and other sporty touches. The packages available with the base S trim include GT Sport Package and the Nerissimo GranSport Package, both of which come with specific wheel options and interior trim themes. The GranSport trim also gets an Interior Carbon Fiber which is exclusive to that trim only. The following table shows the differentiation in features between each trim and their prices-

We Recommend

The S trim in its base configuration itself is a well-equipped trim, but you can always opt for a more equipped version according to your likes and needs. The GranLuxe would suit people who want to go all out in terms of luxury and for people who want a better driving experience and better handling, the GranSport would be the better choice. The Q4 AWD option can be chosen for better grip and more traction at a lower extra price compared to the GranSport package.

2021 Maserati Ghibli S Sedan Engine and Performance

8.0/10

The engine under the hood of all the models of the 2021 Maserati Ghibli S is a 3.0L V6 that outputs 424 hp and 428 lb-ft of maximum power and torque. The only transmission option is an 8-speed automatic one in all variants. The power and torque figures are good but definitely not the best-in-class. The pricing of the car is also not very competitive and Maserati actually has never been concentrating too hard on the pricing aspect of their cars. The Ghibli S competes with the higher-end trims of the Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5-Series as well as the Audi S6.

2021 Maserati Ghibli S Sedan engine bay

All of these cars are significantly lower priced than the base version of the Ghibli S. And when the higher trims are taken into consideration, the price difference becomes phenomenal. Keeping the pricing talks aside, the engine in the Ghibli S is extremely refined and provides a super smooth delivery of power in a responsive manner. The Ghibli S takes 4.5 seconds to reach 60mph and crosses the quarter-mile mark in 11.8 seconds which is actually slow in terms of 60-mile runs but beats the competition with the quarter-mile times.

The Maserati, even while being a powerful car, still is a failure in terms of raw power output figures. As mentioned earlier, all of the competition is more powerful than the Ghibli in terms of power figures. The BMW M550i comes with a much stronger V8 under the hood. The Maserati is also the slowest among the competition in terms of 0 to 60 times which is disappointing, but what it loses there, it gains significantly in terms of quarter-mile times. The Maserati beats all of the competition by completing the quarter-mile run in the fastest time.

How well does the 2021 Maserati Ghibli S Drive and Handle?

The 2021 Maserati Ghibli is a slick handling machine aimed at enthusiastic driving. It delivers immense stability around corners while also being extremely stable in straight line runs also. The car is engaging to drive and the twin-turbo V6 delivers loads of power at all times. The ride quality is on a stiffer side and it results in providing a more engaging driving experience while taking a toll on ride comfort. Also, the vehicle feels to have a bit less traction in the rear end of the car in the RWD S models.

2021 Maserati Ghibli S Sedan ride and handling

The GranSport trim further features a performance suspension from Skyhook with electronic damping. This suspension setup makes the Ghibli perform even better while again compromising the ride quality. The Maserati Ghibli overall performs like a sports coupe and not like a sedan that is supposed to offer better ride quality. This is a good thing for people aiming at a more enthusiastic and engaging driving experience, but don’t expect a very smooth travel experience.

How efficient is the braking performance of the 2021 Maserati Ghibli S?

The brakes in the Ghibli S are not the absolute best, but they do perform impressively. The 2021 Maserati Ghibli S comes with 14.2-inch rotors in the front and 13.8-inch ones in the rear. The brake feel is a bit on the softer side but the response is pretty good. The Ghibli S stops from 60mph at a distance of 115ft. Maserati has also effectively managed to keep the weight of the vehicle on the lower side which enhances the braking capability.

The BMW is the absolute best in terms of braking. The car comes to a stop at just 108ft from a speed of 60mph. The Maserati and the Mercedes perform similarly in the braking department. All of the cars in this comparison are good performers in terms of braking capability. The Maserati Ghibli even though it’s not a standout performer in braking efficiency, still manages to be a strong contender.

2021 Maserati Ghibli S Sedan Fuel Economy

7.0/10

The efficiency figures of the Ghibli S are strictly average considering the class and performance of the vehicle. It delivers average fuel efficiency of 17mpg in the city, 25 on the highway, and a combined efficiency of 20mpg. The car however gets a large fuel capacity of 21.1 gallons which enables it to provide a good combined range of 422 miles. So, even though the fuel efficiency is average, the Maserati holds up by providing a long range.

The Mercedes is the absolute best in terms of both fuel efficiency figures as well as range. The E 53 AMG provides a combined efficiency of 25mpg while the Audi delivers the second-best fuel efficiency. The Mercedes along with the Maserati also has the largest fuel capacity which then results in the Merc providing a combined range of more than 500 miles which is super impressive for a car of its performance and class. The Merc is the only standout performer in terms of economy and range.

2021 Maserati Ghibli S Sedan Interior

7.0/10

The interior quality of the Maserati Ghibli S elevates according to the trim chosen. The base S trim features extended leather upholstery with contrast stitching while full premium perforated leather upholstery is also an available option. The interior features a Gloss Dark Composite trim while the dashboard is trimmed in Nero with Rosso stitching and has a full leather-wrapped steering wheel. The GranLusso upgrades to Zegna Silk and leather-trimmed upholstery and Open Pore Radica Wood trim while the GranSport trim comes with sports bucket seats covered in Zegna Pelletessuta upholstery along with a High GlossPiano Black Wood trim.

2021 Maserati Ghibli S Sedan dashboard image

The interior even though comes with a lot of unique trim and leather options there are still some nooks and corners with low-quality materials which is a letdown considering the price of the machine. The space on the inside of the Ghibli is actually not enough considering the fact that it's a sedan and not a coupe. The front seats are comfortable and supportive whereas the second-row seats are cramped and lack legroom. However, the cargo area in the Ghibli S measuring 17.7 cu-ft is one of the best in the segment. Available interior options also include a High Gloss Carbon Fiber Trill trim and an interior carbon fiber package in the Ghibli S GranSport.

The Mercedes and the BMW are the more spacious options in the segment offering great space in both rows. The Maserati absolutely loses out in terms of passenger comfort. However, it comes with the best-in-class cargo capacity which is significantly more than all others. The interior quality is amazing in all of the competitors of Maserati. While Maserati provides some unique interior trims with strange names, the competition uses the more conventional luxury stuff, but still is very much as luxurious as or even more than the Ghibli. The following are some of the standout interior features-

  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Power adjustable foot pedals
  • 12-way power front sport seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Exclusive Ermenegildo Zegna silk & leather upholstery
  • Dual-zone climate control

How intuitive is the 2021 Maserati Ghibli S’s infotainment unit?

The 2021 Maserati Ghibli features an updated 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment unit which is easy to use but still isn’t as intuitive as the more technologically advanced ones in the competitors. The audio system in the Ghibli s is a 10-speaker Harman Kardon Premium Audio System that outputs 900W of crystal clear high-quality audio. The higher-end trims can also be equipped with the even more advanced Bowers and Wilkins audio system. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are also standard features along with the important infotainment features listed below-

  • 10.1-inch Maserati Intelligent Assistant with Navigation
  • HD Radio
  • Satellite Radio
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration
  • Harman Kardon Premium Audio System
  • Available Bowers and Wilkins Premium sound system

The Maserati is also the widest among the competition. The BMW comes with the best ground clearance measuring 5.2 inches making it the most practical one while all others come with a sub-5-inch clearance. Following are some of the most important exterior features in the Maserati Ghibli S-

2021 Maserati Ghibli S vs 2021 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG E 53 4Matic

The Mercedes would be the better choice in this direct comparison as it is faster, more efficient, and provides a lot more space on the inside. The E 53 also handles superbly well while also providing plush and comfortable ride quality. The Maserati doesn’t have anything much to hold up against the Mercedes, other than its looks. And there are too many reasons to choose the AMG E53 over the Maserati.

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG E 53 4Matic

2021 Maserati Ghibli S vs  2021 BMW M550i xDrive

The BMW M550i is the faster and better handling machine with sharper, stronger brakes. The Maserati can’t hold up against it in terms of speed or handling. The BMW is also the more spacious one while delivering better ride quality. The BMW is not as comfortable as the Mercedes in the comparison, but still delivers a better driving and traveling experience than the Maserati.

2021 BMW M550i xDrive

2021 Maserati Ghibli S vs 2021 2021 Audi S6 Premium Plus

Here again, the Audi S6 would be the better overall choice as it also has some major advantages over the Maserati Ghibli S. It has a major price advantage over the Ghibli S while being faster and delivering more fuel economy, and having a far more superior and advanced infotainment system. The S6 is also quite more spacious than the Ghibli S. The Ghibli does look better than the S6 inside out, but that is not everything you expect from a vehicle of this class and size.

2021 Audi S6 Premium Plus

2021 Maserati Ghibli S Sedan Final Verdict

7.2/10

The 2021 Maserati Ghibli S is a great machine. It has a strong engine and capable handling combined with an extremely slick and beautiful exterior and design language. But, it is extremely overpriced. There are much better cars available in the segment for a much lower price. But the Ghibli still can be a statement of style with impressive power outputs and extensive interior luxury options. So if you want to build a machine that is truly unique and matches your individual characteristics, then and then only spec up a Ghibli according to your specific likes, or else choose any of the better options for a lower cost.
