Detailed Review

The GranTurismo Convertible (GranCabrio) is almost a decade old and it is the part of the generation which was introduced in 2007. The Pininfarina designed convertible has started to show its age. The GranTurismo Convertible benefits from Maserati's success on the race track since a very long time. Maserati has poured in their experience into developing this iconic car.

In its Sport trim, the Maserati GranCabrio produces 460 horsepower. Maserati is a tad slower when compared to the other exotic cars. Maserati benefits from lightweight engine which has been fitted behind the front axle to equate the front-rear weight distribution. The Ferrari built engine delivers high performance with an exceptional level of refinement.

Maserati GranCabrio comes with a sticker price of $145,740 and goes up to $161,070 for the MC trim. Add the optional features to this mix and the asking price for the Maserati can well up to the $200,000 mark. The newly updated cars from the competition are faster, exotics like the 911 can easily do a sub-three second 0-60 mph. This Maserati is up against the Mercedes SL 550 roadster, Porsche 911 and BMW 650i.

When the Maserati GranTurismo first released in 2007, it left the world star struck with its glamorous exterior. More than a decade later Maserati still really has not toyed with the exteriors and the 2018 Maserati GranTurismo Convertible is still one of the best looking car in the segment.

The 2018 Maserati GranTurismo Convertible is priced starting from $148,850 and the higher trim is priced at $161,220. The engine is a Ferrari-built 4.7-liter V-8 and it continues to produce 454 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque. The transmission is 6-speed automatic and the car gives 13/20 MPG for city/highway.

The 2018 Maserati GranTurismo Convertible has entered the market by making certain building improvements. Maserati has adopted the policy of not fixing what is not broken and the 2018 Maserati GranTurismo Convertible is the epitome of fine Italian finish.

2018 Maserati GranTurismo Convertible Engine

5.6/10

"There is an amazing, 454-hp 4.7-liter V-8 that is good for sub-5.0-second 0-60 runs. The droptop adds weight and lacks the coupe’s stiffness and response, but still looks fabulous." - Car and Driver

Engine and Transmission

The 2018 Maserati GranTurismo Convertible comes with 4.7L V8 Ferrari engine which provides the car with 454hp at 7000 rpm and a torque of 384 lb-ft at 4750rpm. The transmission is a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters. The 2018 Masearati GranTurismo Convertible reaches 185.

The 2018 Masearati GranTurismo Convertible fares below average when compared to its competitors. The car beats the Mercedes SL 550 Roadster and Porsche 911 GTS Cabriolet when it comes to torque but not by a lot and loses out to them when it comes to torque by a considerable margin. The Maserati loses out by a big margin to the Jaguar F-Type R Convertible.

Acceleration

The 2018 Maserati GranTurismo Convertible is not a car known for its speed in its segment and that is reflected when we analyse the acceleration of the car. The car clocks a 4.7 seconds for 0-60 MPH and takes 13.1 seconds to cover one fourth of a mile.

The Maserati GranTurismo Convertible Sport disappoints when it comes to acceleration. It is at the bottom of the segment when it comes to both reaching 0-60 MPH and covering quarter mile. The Maserati takes 4.7 seconds for a 0-60 MPH which a lot more than 3.6 seconds taken by Porsche 911 GTS Cabriolet. The car takes 13.1 seconds to cover a quarter mile which is a lot more than 11.7 seconds taken by Jaguar F-Type R Convertible.

Ride and Handling

The Maserati GrandTursimo has always been a very pleasurable and sporty drive and the 2018 Masearti GrandTourismo is no less. For a car with less than 500 horsepower and 400 lb-ft and a curb weight nearing 4,300 pounds, the GranTurismo is deceptively quick. Off and running, the GranTurismo makes truly glorious music. Unencumbered by turbochargers, it unleashes an animalistic growl.

Electronically adjustable dampers in the base Sport model offer a calm ride even when set to their firmest mode. The supposedly more aggressive MC version's single-mode dampers are also compliant enough for daily duty. The steering is extremely responsive and gives you a god grip on the road even with very high speed.

Braking

The 2018 Maserati GranTurismo shows a better result when it comes to breaking as compared to its results in acceleration. It has a 60-0 MPH stopping distance of 102 ft which is the best in class. The breaks are effective in absorbing the momentum of a relatively heavy car. The car has a front brake of 14.2 inches and a back brake is 13.0 inches.

The 2018 Maserati GranTurismo is the best in class when it comes to breaking with its stopping time being the table topper beating the Mercedes, Porsche and Jaguar. The bite of the break is good and gives you close control on the breaking intensity as per requirement.

2018 Maserati GranTurismo Convertible Fuel Economy

6.7/10

The 2018 Maserati GranTurismo Convertible Sport has almost the same fuel economy as the previous versions and is not an improvement when compared to its competitors. The car offers 13 MPG in the city and 20 MPG on highway. The combined is 15 MPG which is the least in the segment.

MPG (city) 13 17 18 15
MPG (highway) 20 25 26 23
MPG (combined) 15 20 21 18

The Maserati sits at the bottom of the table when it comes to fuel efficiency. The combined economy of 15 MPG is 75% of 21 MPG given by the Porsche 911 GTS Cabriolet. The nearest competitor is the Jaguar and even that offers a combined economy of 18 MPG.

2018 Maserati GranTurismo Convertible Interior

8.9/10

"The GranTurismo’s interior, from the instrument panel to the rear seats (which really are suitable only for kids), is dressed in soft leathers with impeccable stitching." - Car and Driver

Seating and Comfort

The inside of the car is a place of plushness and luxury. The car has 4 seats, two rear and two front. The seats are decently sized with no complains about spacing. The seats measure 40.2/54.2/41.7 (Head/Shoulder/Leg) inches for front and 34.3/48.9/30.1 inches for the second. The front seats are heated.

Second (Head/Shoulder/Leg) (In.) 34.3/48.9/30.1 N/A 33.2/48.5/27.0 N/A

The upholstery is leather and the interiors are made of leather and wood leaving aside the carbon fibre. The gauges shimmer a deep, brilliant blue, and the speaker covers feature a pleasing pattern of laser-drilled holes. The only signs of the car's age are the 2007-vintage steering wheel, climate controls, and switchgear, and they stick out like sore thumbs, unfortunately.

Infotainment System

The 2018 Maserati GranTurismo Convertible comes with a Bose surround sound sytem. There's a new infotainment system based on parent company Fiat Chrysler's Uconnect technology. A new 8.4-inch touchscreen occupies most of the center stack with graphics suitably differentiated from other FCA products. You get all the Important Features like Sat Nav, Radio, Bluetooth Connectivity and others.

Cargo Capacity

The 2018 Maserati GT Convertible belongs to a segment of cars that do not pay a lot of emphasis to the cargo volume capacity. The car has decent boot space of 6.1 cubic feet which is not the best or worst in class.

Dimension and Weight

The Maserati GranTurismo Convertible has been considered a work of art for the past decade. The car is 194.2 inches in length, 75.4 inch wide and 53.3 inch high. A 5 inches ground clearance, which is the highest in its segment leads to better utility in city driving. The car weighs 4365 lbs which makes it the heaviest car in its segment. The wheel base is a 115.8 inches and the track width is 62.4/62.6 inches front/rear.

Track width (in) F/R 62.4/62.6 62.8/63 60.6 /60.8 62.4/64.1

The car is longer than any other car in its segment and also heavier and with the highest ground clearance. The increased is length is due to the car being a four seater.

2018 Maserati GranTurismo Convertible Safety

The 2018 variant has not really made any leaps from the last variant when it comes to safety. The car has a lot of safety features which make it a secure car for passengers.

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)

  • Side Impact Beams
  • Dual Stage Driver And Passenger Seat-Mounted Side Airbags
  • Front And Rear Parking Sensors

2018 Maserati GranTurismo Convertible Competition

Maserati GranTurismo Convertible vs. Mercedes SL 550 Roadster

The Mercedes SL 550 Roadster is cheaper than the Maserati by almost $40,000. Although of the Maserati being a lot more expensive the Mercedes comes out on the top for a lot of things. Mercedes provides better torque reaches 60 MPH faster and has way better economy. Even though the Mercedes is a two seater it still has more cargo space than the Maserati. The Mercedes is a clear pick over the Maserati.

Maserati GranTurismo Convertible vs. Porsche 911 GTS Cabriolet

The Porsche 911 GTS Cabriolet is the closest car to the Maserati in the segment when it comes to cost and even that is $15,000 cheaper than the Maserati. Porsche is again more powerful and speedy than the car, in fact it takes the least time in the segment for a 0-60MPH. The Porsche also leads the segment when it comes to fuel efficiency. The Porsche 911 is also a long standing series of bestselling cars and matches the Maserati legacy. Porsche is again a clear winner over the Maserati.

Maserati GranTurismo Convertible vs. Jaguar F-Type R Convertible

The Jaguar is the cheapest car in the segment and is almost $50,000 cheaper than the Maserati. The Jaguar is again a more powerful, speedy and economic car than the Maserati. The Jaguar promises to be the most exciting car in the segment whereas the Maserati is a more established car.

2018 Maserati GranTurismo Convertible Final Verdict

The 2018 Maserati GrandTurismo Convertible is not the fastest, meanest or economic car in the market, neither does it need to be. The car loses out when measured by cold hard numbers but the Maserati is a car which says enough is enough to the numbers. The car makes the statement of taking pleasure in legacy and driving. This is perhaps one of the last great Grand Touristers and it celebrates just that.
