2019 Maserati Levante Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

CARHP Editorial Updated on: November 11, 2019

Named after the wind that blows across the Mediterranean and can change from benign calm to gale force in an instant, the Maserati Levante is similar in nature, but the control of its brute power lies in your hand. And now with the introduction of two more power-packed stable mates i.e., the Levante GTS and the Levante Trofeo with the V8 engines, the SUV you are going to control gets more powerful.

Ever since the Maserati Levante made its debut in 2016 as a 2017 model, this large Ghibli-based SUV has lacked one thing: a V8 engine. This fall, though, when the 2019 Levante arrives, Maserati’s SUV will be available with a choice of V8s, both twin-turbo 3.8-liter units hand-assembled by Ferrari. The Maserati has made Levante in such a way that it always maintains practicality and stays relevant to the market from time to time. This SUV is quite capable of giving tough competition with the other both old and new mid-size V6 crossovers such as the Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q8 and the Jaguar F-Pace S.

Overall Rating

The 2019 Maserati Levante is available at a base price of $75,980 and goes up to $169,980 where the Levante Trofeo is priced. The Levante and Levante S comes with V6 engines as before. However, the new trims i.e., the Levante GTS and the Levante Trofeo come with powerful V8 engines. In fact, the GTS has been named as the “SUV of Texas” by the Texas Auto Writer's Association.

The Levante may have dominated for a few years as far as performance is concerned, but its capabilities in various aspects are being challenged by several German SUVs that have had enough time to receive substantial upgrades. The Audi Q8 and Porsche Cayenne are both better-equipped than the Levante in terms of interior technology. On the British front, there is the Jaguar F-Pace that offers exceptional value for its performance, unlike the Maserati Levante whose price tag could easily cross $80,000 just for the base trim.

We Recommend

The 2019 Levante and the Levante S are the same as their predecessors. But the new additions are much more power-packed and feature-filled so if you are ready to pay more, you can always go for one of them. Moreover, the base trim and the Levante S are available with two options the Gran Lusso and Gransport. So if you cannot go for the higher trims you can always pay a little more and customize your Levante as per your choice.

2019 Maserati Levante Engine and Performance

9.0/10

"While the Levante is not the quickest or the most powerful performance-oriented luxury crossover, it certainly plays one of the better soundtracks. In the real-world hustle, this Maserati's acceleration is more than adequate." - Car and Driver

Engine and Transmission

The 2019 Maserati Levante is equipped with the latest-generation Euro 6c-compliant engines which are not only powerful and exciting to drive but also are eco-friendly due to the Auto Start and Stop function. Both the V6 and V8 engines are built at the Ferrari factory in Maranello, Italy. The base 3.0 Liter twin-turbo V6 engines capable of churning out a horsepower of 345 hp along with a torque of 369 lb.ft. While on the other hand, the most powerful 3.8 Liter twin-turbo V8 engine of the Trofeo is capable of producing a horsepower of 590 hp and a torque of 538 lb.ft.

2019 Maserati Levante Engine

These engines are paired up with an 8 Speed Automatic transmission and an intelligent Q4 all-wheel-drive system. The Q4 AWD system is quite composed and provides stability with ease on all terrains. While the Levante is not the quickest or the most powerful performance-oriented luxury crossover, it certainly plays one of the better soundtracks.

The Levante comes in line with the mid-size crossovers such as the Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q8 and the Jaguar F-Pace S. But while talking about the power, the Levante lags behind a bit whereas the F-Pace S leads the line followed by the Audi Q8.

Acceleration

The 2019 Levante can attain a max speed of 156 mph. The twin-turbo V6 engine of the Levante is powerful enough to accelerate the car to a speed of 60 MPH in around 5.8 seconds covering a distance of up to 34.5 meters. Moreover, its aerodynamic design helps it glide swiftly through the wind with ease.

Due to the less powerful engine, the Levante lags a bit in performance. The F-Pace takes the least time to attain a speed of 60 MPH followed by the Audi Q8. Then come the Levante and Cayenne that run on par with each other.

Ride and Handling

The 2019 Maserati Levante comes equipped with the Maserati Stability Program (MSP). It is an advanced active safety and driver assistance system which has been developed for maintaining both its on-road and off-road characters. Moreover, the Maserati has incorporated the Integrated Vehicle Control (IVC) function into the Maserati Stability Program control for the first time in the Levante range. This function uses a smart, feed-forward controller which predicts driving situations and makes the engine speed and brakes adapt to it accordingly. It helps the drivers to maintain control of their vehicle, unlike the traditional ESP systems which simply corrects the driver’s mistakes.

2019 Maserati Levante Handling

Moreover, it comes equipped with Skyhook performance suspension with electronic damping, Electric Power Steering (EPS), Brembo brakes and the Q4 AWD system to provide maximum comfort while driving on any type of road. Especially the Skyhook Suspension which comes in 2 levels of 3 different modes namely Normal, Sport and Off-roading which helps the driver adjust the suspension in accordance with the terrain he is driving on. An adjustable air suspension keeps the ride pretty comfortable, but you may find that the Levante rides a little harshly for a luxury vehicle.

Braking

The 2019 Maserati Levante is equipped with 2-piston floating calipers working on ventilated discs at the front. The rear brakes are the same in the Levante. On the other hand, the Levante S, the GTS, and the Trofeo trim come equipped with Brembo 6-piston aluminum monobloc calipers working on drilled discs in the front and floating calipers with ventilated drilled discs are fitted at the rear.

Design and Styling

Whereas the Range Rover and Cayenne are fairly common, the Maserati draws plenty of stares. Making an SUV "sexy" isn't easy, but Maserati has worked its magic with the Levante. The design concept of the 2019 Levante has been revamped to improve aerodynamic efficiency. However, it still maintains the anytime recognizable look that the Maserati designed it with. With an overall length of 197 inches, a width of 85 inches and a height of 66.1 inches, it still looks quite extruding and stylish.

2019 Maserati Levante Competition

Maserati Levante vs Porsche Cayenne

The Cayenne has been in the market for quite some time and has gained the trust of the market. On the other hand, the Levante was introduced to the market of midsize crossover SUVs just a couple of years back but is loaded up with many advanced features. However, the Porsche along with its low price and on par power and performance also provides quite some space thus bringing itself into consideration.

2019 Porsche cayenne

The Cayenne's interior is nicer and feels better put together than the Levante's, but the Maserati offers a bit more style and panache than the Cayenne's more anonymous look. However, both of these SUVs can easily cost more than $150,000. All things considered, you’re better off with the Porsche.

Maserati Levante vs Audi Q8

The Audi Q8 is the newcomer to the market. But looks like coming straight into the market it is going to give a tough competition to most of the midsize crossovers in the line including the 2019 Maserati Levante. The intelligently-crafted Levante combines both excellent performances with outstanding interior elegance, including state-of-the-art technology.

2019 Audi Q8

The Audi has a good amount of cargo space and a second-row room, and you can equip it with the third row of seats. In terms of overall performance, the Audi Q8 seems to be a sensible alternative to the Maserati Levante.

Maserati Levante vs Jaguar F-Pace S

The 2019 Jaguar F-Pace S is the sports trim of the Jaguar F-Pace. Its supercharged V6 engine is quite powerful than that of the Levante. In fact, it is a better performer and gives a fuel economy on par to the Levante. Moreover, it is also a feature-rich as the Levante and has many spacious interiors. And all this at a very low price than the Levante. Thus the F-Pace might get more Preference than the Levante. The 2019 Jaguar F-Pace is a balanced, desirable crossover SUV and defeats the Maserati Levante in terms of overall performnace.

2019 Jaguar F-Pace S

2019 Maserati Levante Final Verdict

7.3/10

Looks like 2019 Maserati Levante is not all about power and performance this year. The price you are going to pay for it looks quite justified for the comfort, advanced features and versatility it provides. However, if you still consider power and performance as a factor the newly introduced GTS and Trofeo might win your heart. Still, its price is a huge factor because its competitors are providing even more power-packed performers for the same price.
