2019 Maserati Levante GTS SUV Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

CARHP Editorial Updated on: November 11, 2019

The SUV market was shaken up by Porsche when they first introduced the Cayenne Turbo in 2002. Porsche showed that Performance SUV's can be both fast and practical as well. What followed was a slew of Performance SUVs from other Luxury Carmakers like Mercedes, BMW and Land Rover. Maserati wanted to join this party and released their version of the Performance SUV in the form of the 2019 Maserati Levante GTS.

The 2019 Maserati Levante GTS takes its design inspiration from the stupendous Quattroporte. Power comes from a Ferrari derived 3.8LTwin Turbo V8 and the numbers stand at a mighty impressive 550hp and 538lbs.-ft of torque. The primary rivals to the Maserati include the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, BMW X6 M, Mercedes GLS 63 AMG, and the Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR.

Available in just one trim but with multiple customization options, the Levante GTS is priced at just over $121,000.

2019 Maserati Levante GTS SUV Engine and Performance

7.0/10

"This Ferrari-built V8 feels right at home in Maser's midsize SUV." - CNET.com

Engine and Transmission

Under the hood of the 2019 Maserati Levante GTS, lives a Ferrari assembled 3.8L Twin Turbo V8 that spits out a massive 550hp @6250rpm and a ginormous 538lbs.-ft. of torque at 2500rpm. What sets the Maserati apart from its other rivals is the fact that the power delivery of this SUV is unlike any other SUV in the market. The 8 Speed ZF-sourced transmission comes with a rotary dial to change the gears and works brilliantly in most situations.

Engage the Levante GTS's sport mode and let the valves open creating the shortest, highest-energy route for the exhaust gases. The Engine not only gets a boost in performance but also provides a mind-numbing noise that can send shivers down the spine.

In terms of rivals, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo offers identical power figures as the Maserati but has an advantage in the torque figures. The Merc and the Bimmer offer even higher power and torque figures with the Merc being the most powerful of the lot.

Acceleration

The Maserati Levante GTS is no slouch when it comes to performance. The Modena maker's SUV gets to the 60 MPH in just 4.0 seconds and sets a benchmark for others to follow.

Talking Rivals, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo manages to beat the Maserati by the smallest of margins while the Bimmer stands toe-to-toe with the Maserati. The Heft of the Merc plays against it and hence makes it the slowest of the lot.

Braking and Handling

The 2019 Maserati Levante GTS offers breathtaking performance without compromising on its braking abilities. The low curb weight and the superb brakes of the Levante GTS allow this Modern Modena based company's SUV to come to a halt from 60 mph in just 105ft.

With a standard Intelligent AWD, perfect 50-50 weight distribution, extra low profile rubber, and rear limited-slip differential, the Levante GTS handle like a proper sports saloon. Most people won't be disappointed by the way this Maserati manages to carve out of corners and maintain its composure and stability out of there. Body roll is well contained on both the corners and while changing lanes on the motorway as well.

The Porsche Cayenne Turbo continues to follow the footsteps of the Maserati as it has the identical same figures as the Maserati. The BMW X6 M is the surprise package of the lot as it offers the best braking performance in this comparison while the Merc's heft causes it to be the last in this comparison.

2019 Maserati Levante GTS SUV Fuel Economy

5.0/10

With most modern performance Cars focusing more on performance and trading off MPG, Maserati has ensured that the Levante GTS offers the best of both worlds. The Levante GTS offers an astounding combined MPG figure of 15 while the best MPG figure is obtained on the highway and is around 18 MPG.

7.8/10

"Within the Levante GTS, the upscale party starts with premium leather covering the seats, door panel and lower dash, with a choice of trim materials, including our favorite, the unfinished carbon fiber." -Kelley Blue Book

Seating and Comfort

Maserati says that the Interiors of the Levante GTS suits the expectations of the quintessential luxury SUV buyer. But we fear we have to agree to disagree with this claim of Maserati. The layout feels a bit bland when compared to the likes of the Porsche or the Mercedes and doesn't exude luxury in your face. The Fiat-Chrysler influence can be seen on the use of the plastics and the buttons which definitely feel like they have been built to a cost. We do however like the aluminum paddle shifters behind the steering wheel and the option of upgrading to carbon fiber units if one desires to do so.

When an SUV takes its inspiration from something like a Quattroporte, you expect it to look good. The Levante GTS sure is one. The Levante GTS exudes Italian flair irrespective of the portion of the SUV you look at. 2019 Maserati Levante GTS SUV Competition

Maserati Levante GTS vs. Porsche Cayenne Turbo

The Porsche Cayenne Turbo has been the benchmark of performance SUV's that one could buy without breaking his bank. It still manages to be one as it offers an impeccable build, thumping performance and impressive handling dynamics. The Maserati manages to offer most of what the Porsche has to offer but at a cheaper price. If you aren't much bothered with the Build of your SUV then we feel that the Maserati makes the better bet than the Porsche here.

Maserati Levante GTS vs BMW X6 M

BMW's X6 M is the truth of a Sports car in an SUV silhouette. The X6 M screams performance and is one of the best driving cars in the segment. Couple to that an impeccable Build, superb infotainment system and a price difference of over $16,000 and what you have is a Bavarian Mauler that can ferry you to distant places while giving you the Fun of your life. For people who want a true race car pedigree and an exhaust note that spreads tingles in your spine, the Maserati Levante GTS makes a good claim in offering all of that.

Maserati Levante GTS vs Mercedes-Benz AMG GLS 63

The Mercedes-Benz AMG GLS 63 is Mercedes's way of telling that they can to make an affordable performance SUV. The Merc offers the most power and torque among its rivals and has a tank-like build. Couple to that a long list of standard features and a great infotainment system and the Merc feels to be a great value. But with the heft of over 5000lbs. On its back, the Merc isn't as dynamically agile as the Maserati. And with a difference of over $6,000, we feel that the GTS offers a lot of value and fun over the German leaving aside its not so aspiring interior design, infotainment system and build quality.

2019 Maserati Levante GTS SUV Final Verdict

7.0/10

Maserati has done an exceptional job in offering an SUV that has the pedigree and racing legacy of a Ferrari in a practical Avatar. The 2019 Maserati Levante GTS impresses with its superb driving dynamics, punchy performance and inspiring engine note. Leave aside the less than alluring interior design and build quality and what you have on your hands, is an Italian Beauty that can give you the Joy of driving a sports car in a practical avatar. The 2019 Maserati Levante GTS is a No-Brainer hence for people who want Luxury and Practicality with an Italian Flair.
