Even after having an illustrious experience of building classy sports cars for over a century, Maserati has finally managed to build an engine that they really take pride in. Considered as the diamond of the ring by Federico Landini, the man behind the development of MC20, the engine is a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged dual-combustion direct and indirect fuel injection V6 engine which generates a staggering 621 hp and 538 lb-ft of torque.
With Formula 1 tech in place helping the smaller engine get huge power output, the performance from the 2022 MC20 is also expected to be breathtaking, with Maserati making claims for a 0-60 mph run of under 3 seconds. The MC20 is also expected to reach a top speed of 200 mph, while its engine screams at a redline of 8,000 rpm. The V6 engine is mated to a Tremec sourced 8-speed automatic transmission which powers the rear wheels. Maserati also says that a heavier convertible is also in the make which shall also get an all-wheel-drive drivetrain.

The competition employs much larger capacity engines and yet more often than not aren’t able to match the massive engine output of Maserati’s new engine. The Lamborghini Huracan Evo has a much larger engine with two additional cylinders that take it 60 mph from a standstill in just 2.5 seconds. The Ferrari, on the other hand, has a superior torque output and yet is marginally slower off the line. The McLaren 600LT is the most expensive of the lot and is almost as quick as the MC20 coupe.
How does the 2022 Maserati MC20 Coupe handle?
Maserati claims that the MC20 won’t just be a stripped-out track-focused supercar but strikes a perfect balance between comfort and outright performance. While many might not be a fan of the engine downsizing, what it does is reduce weight which brings the weight distribution to a sweet 42:58 front and rear ratio. Apart from being a mid-engine which is always a key ingredient for sound handling, Maserati has placed the engine lower and has mounted the turbos onto its outer edges rather than between the cylinders, which further helps in weight distribution.
Steering is also reportedly the most exciting aspect of the MC20 with its superlative feedback that offers you the entire feel under the front wheels of the car. The six-piston 15-inch front and four-piston 14-inch rear carbon-ceramic Brembo brakes imbibe confidence and assure ample grip for the monstrous power under its hood. Maserati has made sure to make the car road-worthy as they have marketed it as an everyday sports car, and one should not need a great deal of learning curve before getting behind the wheel of the MC20.
