With 2022 MY, the suspected suspension of the manual gearbox from a lot of trims in the 3 and, will make it lose one of its key highlight points. So it will be quite interesting to see how the new Mazda 3 will go against the 2021 Honda Civic Hatchback, 2021 Volkswagen Golf, and 2021 Toyota Corolla Hatchback, with fewer things on hand to offer.

2022 Mazda 3 Hatchback Features

There is no official confirmation regarding the trim levels for the upcoming, but by being fairly modern, we are expecting that Mazda will continue the current trims for 2022. So there are currently six trims that the Model 3 hatchback is available in that are Base, Select, Preferred, Premium, 2.5 Turbo, and 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus. 

The base trim level comes with daytime running lights, an infotainment system with voice command, Pandora internet radio integration, LED headlights, Mazda advanced keyless entry and start system. 

One up the ladder is the Select trim which comes with heated front seats, an overhead console with sunglasses holder, an 8-way power driver's seat with power lumbar support, 2-position memory, and a roof-mounted "shark fin" antenna. If that’s not enough for you then the Preferred trim with windshield projected full-color active driving display, signature LED headlight and taillight illumination, adaptive front-lighting system, and Leatherette-trimmed sport seats and door inserts might lure you. 

Premium is one of the best-specced trim which comes loaded with features like Mazda Radar Cruise Control, Keyless remote panic button feature, LATCH child safety seat anchors and upper tethers, and 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with all-season tires. 

The 2.5 Turbo and Turbo premium plus sit at the absolute top of the ladder and come with body-colored folding, power side mirrors with integrated turn signals and memory positioning, Driver and passenger-side illuminated visor vanity mirrors, a dual-zone automatic climate control system, Bose 12 speaker premium audio system with Centerpoint 2 and AudioPilot 2 and Air filtration.

Which trim should you buy?

To us, we feel the most sensible trim of all is the Premium trim which gets all the bells and whistles like Mazda Radar Cruise Control, Keyless remote panic button feature, LATCH child safety seat anchors and upper tethers, and 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with all-season tires. Also, it comes with an optional AWD too for added control and safety.

2022 Mazda 3 Hatchback Engine and Performance

Under the hood of the new Mazda 3 is a familiar 2.5L naturally aspirated motor that comes as standard and produces quite sufficient 186 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. These numbers are exactly not what you will call very enthusiastic but they do manage to get the job done. The motor is paired to a six-speed automatic transmission and the power can be sent either to the front or all the wheels depending on what configuration you went with. 

The new 2.5L turbo-4 cranks out lots of power that’s delivered with restraint. It comes standard with all-wheel drive and makes for a fast, but not a particularly sporty package. It produces higher power and torque outputs at 227hp and 310lb.-ft. Though there is also a manual transmission on offer, however, there are hints that the manual gearbox will be ditched for the 2022 model so we better not talk about it. 

A base engine equipped Mazda 3 is anticipated to achieve similar levels of performance as the outgoing model, credits to an unchanged powertrain. This means that the hatchback can sprint from 0-60mph in 8.1 seconds, which is also the segment standard. It maintains consistency in its performance completes a quarter-mile race in 16 seconds. Being a carry-forward model, we expect the ride and handling to be mature and responsive. It is expected to continue with its lively nature that when coupled with its precise steering system, make even twisty roads a delight.

With its 2.5L naturally aspirated motor, the Mazda 3 is the most powerful but that doesn’t translate into it being the fastest option in the segment. In fact, it’s the Honda Civic, which despite its lower power and torque outputs manages to dust every competitor, clocking 7.5 seconds to the 60mph mark. On the other hand, the Volkswagen Golf is the slowest car here, and with a small engine at its disposal, it produces the lowest power output of 147hp. The Toyota Corolla Hatchback is evenly matched with the Mazda in terms of performance, however, does it record the lowest top speed of 112 MPH.

Hatchbacks are tailored made keeping frugality in mind and the Mazda 3 is also pretty fuel-efficient and economical on gas. With the base engine and front-wheel drive, the 2021 Mazda 3 is EPA rated at 26 MPG city, 35 highway, and 30 combined. Though with AWD, the figures drop to 25/33/28 MPG. The new 2.5 Turbo model gets 23/32/27 MPG with FWD and 23/31/26 MPG with AWD. While the naturally aspirated engines run on regular unleaded fuel, the turbo-4 can use either regular or premium fuel. The base engine also gets a marginally larger fuel tank that can hold 13.2-gallons and helps cover a range of 343 miles in the city and 462 miles on the highway.

Expectedly the Honda Civic is the most fuel-efficient car averaging 32 MPG, while it’s the Toyota and Volkswagen which have the most driving range because of their bigger fuel tank and better highway fuel economy. And quite unsurprisingly it’s the Mazda 3, which has the biggest engine and a lot of weight to haul is the least fuel-efficient car.

The 2022 Mazda 3’s cabin has to be the best option in the segment. With no changes to its design, It continues to be very thoughtfully designed and luxuriously appointed with premium materials and has few cheap and hard plastic panels. If we remove the Mazda badge from the steering wheel, one can really get this interior confused with one from some German brand. The fit and finish of materials are that good! Not even a single piece of trim here is expected to feel cheap or aftermarket. The upper dashboard is wrapped in what we suppose is faux leather but it certainly has ample appeal to it. The steering wheel also comes as leather-wrapped while the heated one comes as an optional extra.

At the front, space is more than in abundance. The seats are wide with more than enough legroom and headroom and they can accommodate people of all sizes with rather ease. The cushioning is also just perfect and it is quite easy to spend hours driving on this seat. While the heated seats come as standard, if you also want cooled seats, that’s an optional extra.

Space at the rear is not as generous as the front and for some, it might be a little bit cramped. This is a bench seat at the rear and it is mostly suitable for two adults and one really small kid. The cabin being all black might get quite a bit claustrophobic but thanks to the massive panoramic moonroof, things get airy and breezy quickly. However, like the outgoing model, the cargo capacity of 20.1 cubic feet, feels practical but is smaller than its competitors.

So the cabin of Mazda 3 is certainly the best designed one but it is not the most spacious one. The cabin of the Honda Civic Hatchback is considerably more spacious and practical than all of the other cars here. Also, that is pretty much the same for the rear row where the Civic wins once again. The Toyota Corolla Hatchback feels claustrophobic at the back and even its trunk volume of 17.8 cubic feet is the lowest in the segment.

What’s there to keep you entertained?

Handling the infotainment duties in the 2022 Mazda 3 is an 8.8-inch touchscreen which is quite a lot good, to say the least. It is a floating-style display and sits atop the dashboard. The system is easy to use and controlled solely by a console-mounted rotary knob.Those who want Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability will have to look above the base model, and the available 12-speaker Bose audio system and SiriusXM satellite radio are found only on the top two models.

2022 Mazda 3 Hatchback Exterior

Just like the interiors, the 2022 Mazda 3 Hatchback is an extremely beautiful car to look at too. Now looks can be subjective and some prefer Mazda 3 in the sedan over the Hatchback but to us, both of them are equally gorgeous. Though the low profile and swooping roofline does look better on the sedan, the hatchback with its quirkiness has carved its space in our hearts. It is undoubtedly among the best-looking cars in the class.

All models feature a wide, shield-like grille that’s canted forward. Narrow headlights spring from the grille to create an attractive front end reminiscent of Aston Martin's design. These headlines are otherwise conventional hatchback profiles detailed with soft, gentle contours rather than sharp cutlines. 

The rear is maybe the most uninspiring angle to look at the Mazda 3 hatchback but in no sense, it is ugly or unpleasant. It is an overall very mature design and the car genuinely looks a million times better when seen in actuality.

Talking about the numbers, the Mazda is pretty much the heaviest car here weighing 3,082 lbs, while it is second largest in terms of dimensions. Quite expectedly it’s the Honda Civic Hatchback which is the biggest car here but the Mazda 3 has a longer wheelbase of 107.3 inches than the Civic. Our cute little Golf is the smallest car in this group but not by a lot.

The Mazda 3 has always been one of the safest cars in its class and that can be confirmed by the IIHS as it was awarded their most prestigious “top safety pick+” award. The NHTSA also gave the 2021 Mazda 3 a top five-star rating. Standard safety features include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, active lane control, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and a driver attention monitor. 

Buyers can also get blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alerts with automatic emergency braking, adaptive headlights, traffic-sign recognition, a traffic jam assist system, front and rear parking sensors, and a surround-view camera system.

The Honda Civic is due for a major overhaul for 2022 and we expect the hatchback to get newer features and an even more striking design. With an all-new Civic around the corner so you might be able to find some lucrative deals on the current generation Civic hatchback. 

And with a better performing and more fuel-efficient motor, the Honda Civic hatchback makes a better choice than the Mazda 3. But the uncertainty of its future is what is keeping us away from putting out hard-earned money on the Civic hatchback.

If you want a driver’s car, then the Toyota Corolla Hatchback is simply not for you and this is pretty much the end of the discussion. It is an effective hatchback in all other aspects and is a bit quicker than the Mazda. By being a bit cheaper than the Mazda 3 the Corolla further strengthens its case. Though we would still prefer going for the Mazda 3 as it is just a better car altogether and offers more for the money.

Just like the Honda Civic, Volkswagen Golf is also supposed to be completely updated for the year 2022. The next-generation Golf is going to look a lot better and will have a cabin that is leaps and bounds ahead of any of its competition. So we will suggest you wait for the 2022 Golf and then put your money on it.

2022 Mazda 3 Hatchback Final Verdict

The Mazda 3 Hatchback is a pretty gorgeous and practical car. It has one of the best-designed cabins in the lot with a lot of advanced features too. It also happens to be a pretty safe car and is awarded by the IIHS with the “Top Safety Pick+” award for its 2021 iteration. And with that turbo 2.5L mill, it is a proper firecracker to drive. 

While most of the competitor cars are due for an overall update, the new Mazda 3 hatchback will remain the same for 2022, and that makes it a better purchase option if you want to buy right now. If you can wait, then we would suggest you look out for some of the competitor cars as they might offer a better value for money, over the 2022 Mazda 3 Hatchback, once launched.
