Overview

The Mazda CX-3 caught on the subcompact trend the moment it was launched in 2016. The CX-3 was the most driver oriented mini SUV which is why it gained a lot of popularity especially amongst the enthusiasts. Come 2017, the spirited subcompact Mazda CX-3 is back to further enhance its presence in the scenario and promises to improve on a lot.

First thing that might irk quite a few folks is the lack of big car stance. The car looks more like a bloated hatchback than anything else. But, this does not hinder it from being an overall stylish vehicle especially with its sleek profile and modern looking front fascia.

The tale on the inside is quite similar to the exterior. The interior bears a modern clutter free look with the overall quality of materials being rather nice for the price tag. However, there a few drawbacks here and there that can potentially jeopardize its appeal. The 2017 Mazda CX-3 promises stay on track with its enthusiast pleasing mannerisms while being a whole lot better than the outgoing model.

The CX-3 was the most driver-oriented mini SUV which is why it gained a lot of popularity, especially amongst the enthusiasts. Come 2017, the spirited subcompact Mazda CX-3 is back to further enhance its presence in the scenario and promises to improve on a lot.

There are a host of optional packages on offer depending on the preferred trim. The mid-table Touring trim can be ordered with a Preferred Equipment package that adds Bose audio and a power moonroof over the standard equipment. The top end Grand Touring trim can be ordered with a GT Premium package, which adds adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, a heated steering wheel, a memory power driver's seat with power lumbar support, and traffic-sign recognition over the standard equipment.

We Recommend

The Touring variant clearly makes more sense according to us. It’s only around $2000 costlier than the base Sport variant. The extra money buys you creature comforts like heated seats and steering wheel draped in faux leather, a host of automatic features like climate control and proximity entry. You will also be able to score a set of bigger 18” alloy wheel which gives the car a meaner stance and look.

Engine

7.3/10

Like other vehicles in the Mazda lineup, the 2017 CX-3 is fun to drive. It has invigorating handling and precise steering, as well as a comfortable ride with no excessive body roll. -cars.usnews

Engine and Transmission

The motor that does duty in the CX3 is a 2.0L SKYACTIV-G DOHC 16-Valve 4-Cylinder burner which is good for [email protected] rpm and torque of 146 [email protected] rpm. It is paired to a 6 speed auto shifter. It is faster, sturdier and more planted than all of Its competitors.

A brief comparison of the CX3 with other vehicles in the same segment reveals that the vehicle sits comfortably amongst most of Its competitors in the power department. The Fiat pop is the only vehicle in comparison that is more powerful than the CX-3. At $19,960 Mazda seems to have produced a car that is easily the best VFM even on the base trim.

Acceleration

The Mazda CX-3 has a peppy engine that loves to revv all the way to the redline. This translates into a car that will accelerate to high speeds without much trouble. To our relief, the car does with a traditional 6-speed automatic shifter rather than a CVT. The gear shifts are a little too eager at times in the name of better fuel efficiency but they still complement the enthusiastic nature of the car as a whole.

The CX-3 manages to do a 0-60 mph sprint in 8.5 seconds with a quarter mile stats of 15.8 seconds @ 83.3 mph.

Ride and Handling

Mazda has truly triumphed the ride and handling of the CX-3. The car is a just a joy to drive on the roads. The new chassis, updated steering and a stiff suspension setup give the driver confidence to throw the car in corners with a relatively high speed and the car does so without breaking a sweat.

The stiff suspension setup, which allows the car to be driven enthusiastically might turn into cause of concern for some as It's not suited to everyone’s taste. Still, the ride is far from uncomfortable.

Braking

The braking system on the CX-3 consists of 11” brake pads in the front 11.1” brake pads in the rear.  The car is able to a 60-0 mph halt in under 117ft as a result of a relatively low curb weight. The brake pedal travel is adequately precise to the say the least.

When the pedals are pushed to the end in case of a panic braking, the car grinds to a halt without much drama. The pedals themselves are fairly soft and provide efficient braking although they might take a little getting used to for some.

Fuel Economy

8.3/10

Once again, Mazda has done the trick with the CX-3’s with it’s frugal nature. The vehicle manages a hearty mileage of 29/34/31 (City/Highway/Combined) which is fairly frugal for a 2L motor.

Interior

7.8/10

The 2017 Mazda CX-3 is best thought of as a more usable hatchback Mazda with available all-wheel drive. -thecarconnection

As soon as you enter inside the CX3, the first thing that strikes is how conveniently everything has been placed. The ergonomics of this car are spot on. If one has to go by what Mazda says, the front seats have been given a redesign to make it even more comfortable and wider. The dashboard has also been ornamented with faux suede appliques.

Seating and Comfort

Even after the redesigned front seat, the seats fail to achieve the sweet spot that one desires. When compared to rivals, the CX3 falls short on all dimensions be it at the rear or the front which reveals a major shortcoming. There’s no denying the fact that the car could’ve easily done with a roomier cabin for the passengers.

Infotainment system

The SUV is equipped with a 7” infotainment screen laden with the Mazda Connect system. An old school rotary knob is also present to prevent the screen from getting smudged and effectively banishing the need to lean forward while driving. The absence of Android auto and Apple Carplay might also be a cause of concern to some.

Interior Features

Some of the salient interior features that are standard are -

  • Fabric seats
  • Six speaker audio system
  • 7” infotainment screen
  • Low speed automatic emergency braking
  • An optional HUD is also on offer
  • Full set of LATCH connectors to hook child seats
  • Blind spot monitoring system with rear traffic alert
  • Adaptive cruise control

Optional features are -

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Moonroof on the mid table touring trim
  • Bose audio system on the touring trim
  • Lane departure warning system
  • Traffic-sign recognition system
  • Memory power driver's seat with power lumbar support

Cargo Capacity

Unfortunately, the cargo space on the Mazda is major pitfall. It offers the least cargo space amongst all Its rivals. The space becomes even lesser when the optional Bose sound system is present.

It has an awful 12.4 cube ft. of space behind the second row in comparison to the segment leader Buick Encore which has 18.80 cube ft. Unfortunately, the sob story continues when the second row seats are folded to create space as the CX3 falls well short of the segment leader at around 44.5 cube ft. as compared to 48.4 cube ft in the Buick Encore.

Exterior

8.7/10

The CX-3 approaches minimalism without being boring: its flowing, sinewy forms and slightly complex forms envelop the surface, arch and join, flare and recede. The overall effect is sporty and athletic, light and elegant. At the risk of being flowery, it's a breath of fresh air for small SUVs. -thecarconnection

Dimension and Weight

Smaller and lighter than most of Its competitors, this helps the CX3 to achieve an laudable fuel economy but It hurts the legroom and headroom of the passenger especially at the rear. Taller folks may find it cumbersome to sit and move around due to barely adequate space at the rear. As the vehicle sits closer to the ground, you can forget about any hard off roading even on the AWD variants.

Competition

Mazda CX-3 vs Jeep Renegade

The 2017 Chevrolet Trax is also a subcompact crossover just like the Mazda CX-3. The car follows the design philosophy of other Chevy car with its signature grille and rectangular headlamps. However, the Trax looks rather plain and simple in front of the stylish CX-3 even after looking more like an SUV than the latter.

SUV stance brings all the troubles like body roll and low center of gravity to increase issues for the Chevy Trax. Folks who desire better on road performance and a frugal yet sporty enough motor but can live with the compromised room for passengers are better off with the CX3

Mazda CX-3 vs Fiat Pop

The 2017 Fiat pop is based on the Fiat 500 supermini. The car bears a strong resemblance to the car it’s based on.With its conspicuous looks is easy maneuver around the city and even comes loaded with a peppy engine. The interiors are trademark italian with neat and clean finish.

The driving dynamics of this car are just not appealing enough. The interior on the CX3 is also much better. All in all, the CX3 is the clear winner here in our honest opinion.

Mazda CX-3 vs Buick Encore

The 2017 Buick Encore does the pint-size crossover thing well with short wheelbase and overall length. The car is a fair bit expensive to own as compared to the Mazda CX-3. It also is not nearly as engaging to drive as the Mazda. However, its interior sports a much smart look complete with a lot of soft touch materials.

Overall, the Mazda CX3 blazes past the Buick Encore in all possible terms except the interior quality. Hence, the CX-3 is our clear winner here.

Final Verdict

There is no denying that the 2017 Mazda CX-3 is great driver’s car and possibly the best in the segment. The clever torque vectoring system and low ride height allow it to stick to corners even when doing modest speed. The suspension that makes it sporty to ride on smooth tarmac has all the chances to become a pain on rough roads due to its stiff nature. The interior too might not be as good as some of the competitors. But, when you see the entire package that the car is, you’d realize it offer great value for money.
