In the face of strong demand for crossovers, Mazda introduced the subcompact CX-30 and placed it below the popular CX-5 not so long ago in 2019. The SUV gets a standard 2.5-liter four-pot oil burner that churns out 186 horsepower along with 186 lb-ft of torque. The price of the CX-30 starts at $22,200 putting it within the entry-level crossover segment but it also gets a turbo variant to woo the budget-conscious enthusiasts as well. The 2022 Mazda CX-30 comes with some significant updates such as a standard AWD layout across the entire lineup. With a plethora of standard features, a dynamic driving character, and an appealing exterior design, the subcompact crossover takes on the rivals such as the Buick Encore, the Honda HR-V, and the Subaru Crosstrek

Coming from a brand that originated on the Land of the Rising Sun, the Mazda CX-30 has a comparatively trouble-free reliability record as opposed to some of its segment rivals. As per the NHTSA, the debut model of the CX-30 faced only 11 complaints to date while the most recent 2021 model faced only 12 complaints as of now. A couple of its rivals such as the Buick Encore and the Honda HR-V faced a total of 4 and 7 complaints on their 2020 model year, undercutting the CX-30 complaints by a slight margin. Let’s have a detailed look at the problems of the vehicle below.

Mazda CX-30 user complaints and problems

In spite of being a new kid on the block, the Mazda CX-30 managed to uphold the general reputation of the reliability aspect of the Japanese carmakers. The Mazda CX-30 issues were scattered for its 2020 model and its 2021 model also has a similar record as well. Some of the 2020 and the 2021 models of the CX-30 faced a few complaints regarding their advanced safety tech onboard while the latter saw a couple of reports regarding a manufacturing defect of the windshield.

Engine problems

  • Hesitant acceleration: The 2020 Mazda CX-30 faced a single complaint that mentioned this issue. The report stated that while the owner slowed down to exit from a freeway, the vehicle hesitated to accelerate for a couple of seconds.
  • Engine oil burning: This problem was recorded against a couple of 2021 Mazda CX-30 vehicles. The reports stated that due to the high consumption of engine oil by the engine, the oil levels would drop significantly way before the scheduled maintenance.

Safety problems

  • Automatic emergency braking system malfunction: The NHTSA recorded a single complaint about the 2020 CX-30 and a couple of complaints about the 20201 CX-30 regarding this issue. The reports mentioned that while driving, the automatic emergency braking system intervened randomly and apply the brakes even if no vehicle or obstruction was detected at the front.

Miscellaneous problems

  • Warped windshield: The 2021 Mazda CX-30 faced a couple of complaints about a manufacturing defect on its windshield. Officially, only a couple of complaints were recorded. The reports mentioned that a distorted or warped windshield would hamper the visibility while driving. In one report, the owner stated that the distorted windshield would result in rapid eye fatigue and headache. It was also reported that several unofficial forums also recorded a similar issue with several models of the CX-30.

2022 Mazda CX-30 recalls

Soon after its launch, the Mazda CX-30 faced more than a couple of recalls for multiple reasons. The reasons for the recalls include a possible fuel leak, front brake caliper bolts loosening, a faulty power-operated liftgate, and a possible tire leak. It was good to see that the automaker quickly assessed what might go wrong and put in efforts to fix them.

What model year of the Mazda CX-30 to avoid?

The NHTSA reports of the Mazda CX-30 show that the vehicle is has a solid reliability department. With only a couple of years in the market, there are no major issues or complaints against the vehicle as well. Hence, skipping any particular model year of the vehicle isn’t necessary if you’re planning to get one from the used car market.

Should you buy a used Mazda CX-30?

The Mazda CX-30 has gained the required traction in its segment due to its strengths such as that sharp styling, agile handling, and plenty of standard features. Also, its reliability scores are at commendable heights, making it a preferable option for both used car buyers and new car buyers in the market. A used CX-30 with a decent price tag and a clean service history would make for a great buy from the used car lots. Among its competitors, the Honda HR-V and the Buick Encore also have enough going for them if you wish to look at something other than the CX-30 in the segment.
