The Mazda CX-5 slots in the compact crossover category and made its debut on the US shores in the year 2012 for the 2013 model year. It shared its platform with the Mazda Mazda3 and Mazda Mazda6. It received its first facelift in 2016 since then it received slight nips and tucks till now to make it relevant to the competition. Speaking of which, the compact SUV segment has seen a steep rise in demand and competition, even with the pandemic situation not seen to slow down. And Mazda managed to sell 146,420 units of the 2021 CX-5. And now the rumors are rife about a carryover 2022 Mazda CX-5 to be launched with an all-new CX-5 in the making for 2023 based on the all-new Mazda Mazda6 platform.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

If you are looking for a plush compact SUV, but aren’t willing to settle down for those inexpensive nameplates that are less economical and practical than expected. Then the 2022 Mazda CX-5 is something one can wait for. The upcoming SUV won’t let you shell you big amounts, yet offer spacious and striking interiors, with stunning exterior appearance and options under the hood. The 2022 Mazda CX-5 will remain a potent pick in its segment and offer the same five distinctive trims. The 2022 Mazda CX-5 will drop war signals to rivals like Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, and Subaru Forester.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Features

We expect the 2022 Mazda CX-5 to be introduced in the same five trims just like last year. So, the trim level would be like Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature. There are two engine options on offer one is a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-4 and the other being a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine. Standard features include 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights with auto on/off, rain-sensing windshield wipers, rear intermittent windshield wiper, MAZDA CONNECT infotainment system with 10.25-inch color display, etc.

The Touring Preferred SV Package includes a moonroof, 10-speaker Bose surround-sound system, leather-trimmed seats, etc, and Grand Touring Premium Package which includes ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, and rear seats, etc.

We Recommend:

We recommend going for the Touring trim and adding it with the Touring Preferred SV Package to include a few missing features like a moonroof, Bose surrounds system, a power liftgate, power-adjustable front seats with driver seat memory function, etc. Having all this will make it VFM and you don’t lose much in terms of features.

Price:

The pricing for the 2022 Mazda CX-5 has not been announced but we don’t expect any substantial price hike. In that case, it should be in the ballpark of current pricing that starts from $25,70(including destination) and soaring up to $37,905.

Release Date:

There are no official announcements of the release date of the 2022 Mazda CX-5, but one can expect a fall 2021 arrival.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Engine and Performance

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 will retain the 2.5L Inline-4 engine that pushes our 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. The engine is punchy and refined, and the power flows to the RWD setup as standard. The FWD is set to be replaced by the RWD to enhance off-roading capabilities. The engine is mated to a 6-speed shiftable automatic transmission to add convenience and a lenient driving experience. One can also upgrade to a turbocharged 2.5L 4-cylinder engine that is more brawny and produces 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. This engine also includes the same 6-speed automatic gearbox pairing.

If the rumors are believed, the 2022 Mazda CX-5 might also add a beasty Inline-6 engine to the powertrain options. This engine could be available in only petrol form accompanied by 48-volt mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid technology. That said, the Mazda CX-5 manages 0-60 mph in 8.3 seconds from its base engine. The Honda CR-V is the fastest, doing 0-60 mph in 7.6 seconds. Next comes Hyundai Tucson which does 0-60 mph in 8.0 seconds followed by Subaru Forester which does 0-60 mph in 8.5 seconds and is the slowest among all.

As for the ride and handling the Mazda CX-5 will never fail to impress with its above-average handling but that comes with a compromise in the ride quality. The ride is stiff and you won’t be comfortable inside while going over rough patches but the same shine in the form of a stable ride while doing high-speed highway runs.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 has more horses under its hood than both Hyundai Tucson and Subaru Forester, but bows down to the Honda CR-V. The addition of an RWD would make the Mazda CX-5 distinctive in its class. The new engine addition would make the new Mazda CX-5 one of the most prominent picks among the rivals. Though, even the base engine has great punch and power to deliver smooth power.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Fuel Economy

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 will accompany no modifications under the bonnet. This would mean it would continue with the same economy figures, 25/31/28 MPG in city/highway/combined driving respectively. The 14.8-gallon fuel tank can satisfy the thirst of the engine for more than 414 miles on average. These figures have been carried over from the 2021 model year, the FWD version. With the RWD, there could be minor differences. If Mazda plans to put the bigger inline-6 engine option then we could see a further dip in the figures.

In terms of fuel economy figures, the Honda CR-V is the most fuel-efficient with 28/34/30 mpg in city/highway/combined respectively. Next comes the Subaru Forester with 26/33/29 mpg of fuel economy followed by the Mazda CX-5 with 25/31/28 mpg. The Hyundai Tucson is the least efficient among all with 23/28/25 mpg of fuel efficiency figures.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Interior

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 is expected to undergo no changes in the interiors, and carry over the premium and plush comforts. The interiors are where this Mazda CX-5 will continue winning hearts. The design is so clean and effortlessly makes itself in the group of opulent SUVs. From seating surfaces to the dash, interiors are elevated in luxury with optional genuine layered wood trim, Caturra Brown Nappa leather-trimmed seats, premium stitching, and wood inlays combine to indulge the senses of both drivers and passengers and reflect a fascinating luxurious cabin.

There’s enough space to accommodate 5-passengers, the driver’s seats are supportive and relaxing, while the rear seats are appreciable, comfortable, and roomy. Except for the base trim which utilizes some hard plastic surfaces, the cabin is fairly upscale with chrome rounded AC vents and door switches. The boot capacity is sized at 30.9 cu-ft and can fit 9 carry-on suitcases behind the rear seats. As for the competitors, Honda CR-V has the biggest 39.2 cubic feet of cargo capacity followed by Subaru Forester and Hyundai Tucson with 31.1 and 31.0 cubic feet of cargo space respectively.

The rivals are quite spacious, but the Subaru Forester leads the charge with better interior space. Also, the Forester offers a more rugged interior styling which can be compensated with refined materials in upper trims. The Honda CR-V is also subtle yet very practical and functional. While Hyundai Tucson and Mazda CX-5 are the best picks for buyers looking for great features and plush interiors.

The infotainment will remain unchanged as well. It will feature a high-graphic 10.25-inch screen with one of the most intuitive interfaces in the industry. There will be dials and gauges that make it easy for less tech-savvy passengers to access the menus and other features. The MAZDA CONNECT interface is very intuitive, immensely responsive and the graphics are sharp and clear. Standard features include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, six-speaker audio setup, AM/FM, Bluetooth, etc. The interior highlights expected to make way into the 2022 Mazda CX-5 are as follows:

  • Dual-zone automatic climate control with pollen filter
  • Push-button start
  • Power sliding-glass moonroof with one-touch-open feature and interior sunshade (available)
  • Leatherette seats with Lux Suede insert (available)
  • Heated front seats
  • 10.25" full-color display
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration
  • Bose 10-speaker surround sound system with Centerpoint 2 and AudioPilot 2 (available)
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Heated rear seats with 3 level adjustment
  • Caturra Brown Nappa leather-trimmed seats (available)

2022 Mazda CX-5 Exterior

The Mazda CX-5 follows Kodo: “Soul of Motion” design philosophy that creates a sense of motion even at standstill. The front grille features little points instead of horizontal or vertical lines. The sleek headlights add a sharper personality to the SUV. The rear spoiler, twin exhaust pipes, and sharp tail lights are some elements that make the SUV look more sporty and aggressive. The 2022 Mazda CX-5 will carry over the same impacting exterior styling with no significant changes. The soft contours, sharp lines, and shiny finish will adorn the 2022 Mazda CX-5.

The Signature trim decorates the exterior with loads of chrome and other elements making it hard to miss out. The ground clearance is also apt to indulge into mild off-roading, or even cushion out big bumps. The camouflaged 2022 Mazda CX-5 appears to bring a more boxy appeal, with a rear spoiler and updated headlights and taillights. It is anticipated to carry over the same smooth line and contours, but with a new front fascia with a smaller grille, something similar to the all-new CX-30 electric.

Dimensionally the Mazda CX-5 is expected to grow big if it is underpinned with the all-new architecture which it could share from the new Mazda Mazda6 sedan. That said, the new dimensions would put it at par with the dimensionally biggest rivals like the Honda CR-V and the Subaru Forester. Still, the Mazda CX-5 if remains unchanged then also has the longest wheelbase of 106.2-inches which is 1-inch bigger than that of Subaru Forester and Hyundai Tucson but 1.4-inches bigger than the Honda CR-V. That being said, the Subaru Forester gets the highest ground clearance of 8.7-inches. Exterior features highlight include:

  • 17-inch alloy wheels
  • LED headlights
  • LED daytime running lights
  • LED taillights
  • Dual exhaust tip
  • Shield grille
  • A body-colored rear roofline spoiler

2022 Mazda CX-5 Safety

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 hasn’t been crash-tested yet. But since it is a carryover the 2021 Mazda CX-5’s crash-test ratings are expected to be retained. Speaking of which, the 2021 CX-5 grabbed an outstanding 5 out of 5-star safety score from the NHTSA and the “2021 Top Safety Pick+” title from the IIHS.

Standard safety features included in the 2022 CX-5 are airbags, smart brake support with collision warning, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, etc. While higher trims add Driver Attention Alert, 360-degree view monitor, front and rear parking sensors, traffic sign recognition system, etc. The safety features would include the following:

  • Forward-collision warning
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane-keeping assist
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Blind-spot monitoring system
  • Automatic high beams
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Surround-view parking system
  • Reverse automatic emergency braking
  • Driver attention monitoring

2022 Mazda CX-5 Competition

2022 Mazda CX-5 vs 2021 Honda CR-V

With a smaller displacement turbocharged engine, the Honda CR-V will make the 2022 Mazda CX-5 standard engine feel underwhelming. The Honda CR-V is 0.7-seconds quicker in 0-60 MPH sprint, and will again win hearts when it comes to fuel efficiency. The Honda CR-V is more spacious, also in the rear row and cargo area, while buyers will find the 2022 Mazda CX-5 more plush and refined. The Honda CR-V embarrasses the Mazda CX-5 with a plethora of standard safety and driver assistance features. But the Mazda CX-5 is a more appealing ride to show off.

2022 Mazda CX-5 vs 2021 Hyundai Tucson

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 and the Hyundai Tucson have cut-throat competition, as both are incredible in terms of performance and handling, but the Mazda CX-5 owners can brag about better fuel economy. Both the rivals are quite spacious and premium, but if one is fond of screens, then the Tucson would please you and vice versa. The feature-rich Hyundai Tucson could sway the likes of tech geeks but the Mazda CX-5 will find favor from the driving enthusiast who prefers ride and handling over gimmicky features.

2022 Mazda CX-5 vs 2021 Subaru Forester

The Subaru Forester offers a more rugged and soft off-roader appeal in comparison to the shiny Mazda CX-5. Again the interiors in the CX-5 are plusher and premium, but the Subaru Forester offers a more mix of rugged yet comfortable interiors. Both rivals are fun behind the wheel and can map themselves with rougher terrains. But the Forester is more economical and the flat-engine configuration with full-time AWD offers great grunt and distinct roar when throttled.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Final Verdict

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 will be a carryover model, with no significant changes, so buyers who are waiting in queue for the new arriving SUV can grab the 2021 model year. The Mazda CX-5 is snuggling comfortably, but the rear is slightly tight. The interiors are clean and plush, and the infotainment is intuitive and highly responsive.

Buyers can also opt for the optional engine for added punch and grunt. With a new design, a bigger Inline-6 engine, and an RWD powertrain upcoming, the Mazda CX-5 has big potential to attract buyers from expensive German SUVs but Mazda hasn’t confirmed the same. That said, the Mazda CX-5 is already a great car and more updates in the offing would make it even better.
