The Mazda CX-5 is one of the hottest-selling crossover SUVs in the market. Priced at around $27,000, it checks pretty much all the boxes for what buyers look for in a crossover SUV. It comes with powerful engine options, it drives well, and is offered with standard all-wheel drive. However, the most interesting bit of the CX-5 is its interior.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Dashboard

Mazda has drastically improved over the years in terms of quality and equipment and the 2022 CX-5 is a testament to that. The SUV feels very plush on the inside and the fit and finish levels are just top-notch. The cabin is roomy with excellent comfort on offer as well.

This review will take you on a tour of the 2022 Mazda CX-5's interior and tell you all that it has on offer.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Interior Design, Dimensions, and Comfort

The interior of the Mazda CX-5 looks and feels rather upscale for a vehicle of its class and segment. The contoured dashboard looks rich with unique pentagonal air-con vents. The design is also neat where the lower section of the dash houses HVAC controls that are nicely tucked away. All the buttons, dials, and knobs fall perfectly in place and the quality of switchgear is great as well.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Rear Seats

The seats are nice and comfy with a good amount of space in both rows. They are quite supportive too and you can be seated on them for long hours without having any troubles. Both rows also offer plenty of head, shoulder, and legroom and even tall passengers won’t feel cramped. Though 3 adults at the back is still a bit of a squeeze where the middle seat is best suited for children.

On the whole, the cabin of the Mazda CX-5 is an extremely comfortable place to be in.

First Row (Head/Shoulder/Leg) (in)

Second Row (Head/Shoulder/Leg) (in)

The Honda CR-V is the most spacious crossover in the competition and offers slightly more space than the Mazda. However, the Mazda feels the plushest of all as it features the most upscale and premium cabin design.

On the other hand, the Ford Bronco also has a very appealing interior but its design seems to be more youthful and edgy, unlike the CX-5 which appears more classy and sophisticated.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Infotainment

Right from its base spec trim, the 2022 Mazda CX-5 gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display. The system is quite slick to use and all the menus are well laid out. You also get a standard 7-inch digital driver's display.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Infotainment System

For audio, the base trim comes with a rather basic 4-speaker sound system. However, climbing up the trim ladder will get you an upgraded 6-speaker audio system as standard, But if you want the best, higher trims feature a 10-speaker premium Bose surround-sound system with excellent dynamic range and performance.

Key infotainment features

  • 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • 4/6-speaker audio system
  • 10-speaker Bose surround-sound system
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Bluetooth smartphone integration
  • 7-inch digital driver's display

2022 Mazda CX-5 Cargo Capacity

The one area where the CX-5 disappoints a bit is in terms of cargo capacity. Behind the second row, the CX-5 offers 30.9 cubic feet of luggage space which is good for carrying a couple of large bags. And although It might seem decent at first, when compared to some of the vehicles in the segment, it falls short by a significant margin.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Cargo Space

With the rear seats folded, the cabin offers 59.6 cubic feet of total cargo volume, which in itself seems adequate, but then again, it's significantly less than what the rivals have on offer.

However, one redeeming feature is the 40/20/40 split-folding second-row which allows you to configure the rear seats as per requirements.

Standard Cargo Capacity (ft³)

The Mazda CX-5 has the lowest cargo capacity of all the crossovers here. The Honda CR-V on the other hand has the highest cargo volume on offer. It gets 39.2 cubic feet of cargo space with all the seats up and a massive 75.8 cubic feet with the second row folded down.

The Toyota RAV4 comes in next, followed by the Bronco Sport, leaving the CX-5 at the very bottom.

Additional Interior Storage Spaces

The CX-5 features quite a few storage spaces throughout its interior. At the front, there is a sizeable glovebox, a wireless charging dock on the center console followed by two cupholders, and a deep storage bin under the front armrest. All four doors have large storage pockets as well with integrated bottle holders.

At the back, you get a foldable armrest that houses a pair of cupholders for the rear passengers, however, it's absent on the base trim.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Creature Comforts

The list of creature comforts with the base spec trim isn’t all that long. You get manually adjustable front seats, fabric upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a manual air-conditioning system.

With the top-spec Signature trim however you get plenty of premium features that include 8-way power-adjustable heated and ventilated front seats, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, genuine wood trim, and Nappa leather upholstery.

The interior of the CX-5 is indeed very comfortable. There’s ample passenger space on offer whereas all the seats are quite snug and supportive. What impresses further is the interior design and the quality of materials used in the cabin; it just feels as if it's from a segment higher.

The downside however is the scant cargo space that the SUV offers. It almost seems as if Mazda purposefully sacrificed luggage space in favor of better passenger space. So, if you can live with some of the shortcomings, the 2022 Mazda CX-5 will not disappoint.
