The Mazda CX-9 was introduced in 2016 to cater to the rising needs of American families. The Japanese car manufacturer offers a very posh cabin and impressive driving dynamics which has also helped in its 25,828 sales figure last year. The number pits it against the Toyota Highlander and the Honda Pilot. The CX-9 does not have a merry story, like its rivals, and people have raised complaints to the manufacturer regarding its infotainment issues. The complainants have also reported the water pump malfunctioning when the odometer crosses 50,000 miles. Apart from this, the Mazda Smart Brake System has been problematic for the people as well. To add to the woes the 2018 Mazda CX-9 recall history comprises a couple of recalls. Do these issues pose a major inconvenience and should they be a deterrent to your buying decision? Read more to find out.

2018 Mazda CX-9 Problems

Electrical issues:

  • Infotainment issues: The Mazda CX-9 infotainment problems are there since the 2016 model year. People have reported stuttering and freezing of the system while driving. The infotainment system flickers and stops operating which causes a lot of distraction.
  • Frozen backup camera: The CX-9 backup camera issue had been reported earlier, but the frequency has increased with the 2018 model year. The backup camera freezes when the crossover is put in reverse. This causes the camera to produce a distorted image or, sometimes, not display anything at all. The sensors work but the camera’s disablement makes it dangerous to reverse.
  • Electrical seat battery drain: In the models equipped with electrical seats, there have been reports of battery drainage. Upon dealership investigations, the root cause was diagnosed to be an active connection that remained on despite turning the car off.
  • Smart City Brake Support malfunction: Many 2018 CX-9 owners have reported the SCBS light popping up in the instrument cluster. This light resulted in a loss of power to the wheels and completely shut down the braking lights. One complainant had a close call and was nearly rear-ended due to the system giving issues.

Mechanical issues:

  • Water pump malfunction: The CX-9 water pump malfunctions and causes issues with the AC. such malfunction also overheats the engine and has resulted in engine stalling issues for some people.
  • Cylinder head cracks: Some 2018 CX-9 owners have reported the engine cylinder head to develop cracks under stress. Such cracks cause the engine to stall or seize, losing all motive power to the wheels and stopping the car. The issue has been reported by people who’ve clocked a considerable distance in their crossover.
  • Fuel sensor issues: The fuel-level sensor malfunctions and shows erroneous readings in the instrument cluster. The complainants have reported running out of gas while the fuel gauge showed ¼ tank remaining. Some people have filled up because the gauge showed lower fuel levels than actual.
  • Suspension noise: The CX-9 suspension noise is an old issue that was reported in the 2017 model year as well. The suspension starts making a creaking/squeaking noise while driving over some undulations. The noise emanates when the car is moved from a standstill. No issues have been diagnosed upon dealership-side investigations.

Electrical System

Disruption of electrical communication due to issues with the wiring harness may disable the engine starting system, the turn signals, and the airbags. This increases the risk of a crash.

Mazda North American Operations issued a recall on July 26, 2019. The owners were notified and the dealers replaced the wiring harness free of charge.

Fuel System

Cracking and deformation of the impeller in the low-pressure fuel pump may stall the engine, increasing the risk of a crash.

The dealers will replace the fuel pump. Mazda North American Operations issued interim letters to the owners on January 7, 2022. The manufacturer will send a second letter once the remedy is available, for which the parts will be available by September 2022.

Should you buy the 2018 Mazda CX-9?

The 2018 Mazda CX-9 is an amazing vehicle and a driver’s delight because of its superb handling characteristics. The problems occurring in the crossover are communicated to the manufacturer and communications have been made for a remedy. The mechanical issues are reported once the crossover has done a considerable amount of mileage on the odometer, making it a situation to be wary of. If one wants to buy a new Mazda CX-9, fret not because the package is a fool-proof idea with many boxes ticked. For the people looking for a used CX-9, make sure to go over any electrical issues in the maintenance records and see for fuel sensor issues addressed in the past. Apart from this, due diligence is must for a trouble-free ownership.
