Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2023 Mazda CX-9 doesn’t offer any significant changes from the 2022 Mazda CX-9, however, it is a part of the second CX-9 generation that has been introduced in the year 2016. Mazda hasn’t released any information related to the pricing or trim levels for the CX-9, but we expect it to be the same as the brand’s current structure which may start around an MSRP of $40,000 and can range up to $52,000 for the top trim. In this segment, it will continue to face the likes of the Kia Telluride, the Honda Pilot, and the Toyota Highlander.

The details regarding the Mazda CX-9 2023 trims and pricing haven’t been released yet officially, however, it is expected that it follows the current structure with the base trim starting at an expected MSRP of $40,000 that can range up to $52,000. The 2022 Mazda CX9 offered six different trim options to select from, the same will be the case for the 2023 year model. The features aren’t known yet, however as there are no significant changes in this 2023 Mazda CX-9 it is expected that it will have the same list of standard specifications in the base trim including heated front seats (3 levels), a 10.25-inch full-color center display, cloth upholstery, 18-inch wheels, three-zone climate control, 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat with power lumbar support, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter knob.

We Recommend

The details and specifications of the 2023 Mazda CX-9 aren’t known yet, however, once Mazda releases the information on the CX-9 we will update this section with the best option to buy.

Release Date

The release date information for the 2023 Mazda CX-9 isn’t officially revealed, however, we believe that its production will begin in late 2022 and it will be available for orders at the dealership and showroom in the early start of 2023.

Engine and Performance

When the Mazda CX-9 will launch in the year 2023, it will be the first model that will use a new turbocharged 3.0L Inline6 that is expected to be paired with a 48-volt hybrid system. Additionally, a plug-in hybrid variant can also be used which is offered in the European Mazda CX-60 SUV. However, the base engine would be the same as that of the 2022 CX-9 which comes equipped with a standard AWD drivetrain.

The base model comes with a 2.5L Inline4 cylinder that pairs along a six-speed shiftable automatic transmission that generates an output of 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. It can complete a run of 0 to 60 MPH in 7.1 seconds while covering a quarter-mile mark in 15.5 seconds. However, most competitors offer a large V6 engine with considerably more power, so the CX-9 is not the quickest in a three-row SUV although it offers swift acceleration and above-par fuel efficiency in its class. Further, its composed size makes it easy to move in tight corners, and its engine will provide an adequate lively experience while taking it on a highway or expressway easily.

The Toyota Highlander offers a standard 3.5L V6 engine that offers a high engine power performance and makes it mark at the top of the table which can produce a maximum of 295 hp and 263 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, it can complete a run of 0 to 60 MPH in 6.8 seconds while completing a quarter-mile mark in 15.4 seconds. However, it compensates with a low top speed of 112 MPH that lurks at the bottom of the table.

The Honda Pilot can complete a run of 0 to 60 MPH acceleration in 6.2 seconds while covering a quarter-mile distance in 14.7 seconds which in terms is the quickest when compared to other adversaries. On the other hand, Kia Telluride outperforms with a better top speed of 141 MPH against its adversaries, and the engine has enough muscle for passing and getting up to highway speeds. As per the engine, statistics are concerned the Mazda CX-9 offers a competitive edge over all its adversaries even with a 2.5L Inline4 engine.

2023 Mazda CX-9 Ride and Handling

The Mazda CX-9 offers sporty handling and quality ride comfort while it comes equipped with a MacPherson strut with a stabilizer bar as its front suspension and its advantage is that it leaves plenty of space sound the wheel hub open and it is an effective way to combine strength, spring, and stability at a relatively low manufacturing cost.

Along with that it comes equipped with a multilink with stabilizer bar rear suspension and its advantages are better response under sporty driving conditions, wheel alignment remains the same during all suspension travel, smoother ride, and allows greater adjustment range in the wheel alignment. The steering offers light and precise handling that makes the car much smaller than it is, large bumps may still cause cabin disruption but minor bumps are easily absorbed. Similarly, while driving about town, wind and road noise are barely audible, but when you pick the pace up they do intrude inside the cabin. Further, taller tires contribute to its balance helping provide a cushion again varied road conditions.

2023 Mazda CX-9 Braking Performance

The 2023 Mazda CX-9 braking performance statistics aren’t known yet, however, it is expected that it will have a similar set of front and rear rotor brake sizes as offered in the 2022 CX-9 that measures 12.6 and 12.8 inches. The turning circle diameter measures 38.8 curb-to-curb (ft) providing a better driving experience, however, doing a U-turn is competitively hard in busy streets. It also comes equipped with 4-wheel disc diagonal hydraulic brakes that dissipate heat thoroughly and distribute heat evenly making it last longer than mechanical brakes. Some standard specifications include 4-wheel, 4-channel with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Electronic parking brake, and Brake Assist

The Toyota Highlander provides a better combination size in its front and rear rotor breaks measuring 13.3-inches each. On the other hand, the Honda Pilot feels the lightest among its competition with a minimal 4,030 lbs curb weight which helps it accelerate at high speeds. On the other hand, the Mazda CX-9’s sheer curb weight of 4,409 lbs can hinder its performance.

Fuel Economy

Mazda is renowned for an above-par fuel economy in its class, however, the fuel ratings of the 2023 model haven’t been updated it is expected that it will have a similar mileage capacity as seen in the 2022 CX-9 which offers 20 MPG in the city, 26 MPG on the highway, and 23 MPG combined. Additionally, it will provide a similar fuel tank capacity of 19.5 gallons as seen in the 2022 Mazda CX-9.

The 2022 Toyota Highlander outperforms it adversaries with a better fuel efficiency of 21 MPG in the city, 29 MPG on the highway, and 24 MPG combined. However, it compensates and lurks at the bottom of the table with the least fuel tank capacity of 17.9 gallons. On the other hand, the 2022 Honda pilot offers the best range of 527 miles on the highway so that you don’t have to worry to refill at gas stations. On the other hand, the Mazda CX-9 and the Honda Pilot offer an equivalent fuel tank capacity of 19.5 gallons. When comparing the overall statistics, we can say that the 2022 Toyota Highlander ranks much better with its fuel efficiency and competitive range as compared to its rivals.

The CX-9 welcomes passengers with upscale interior materials that feature cloth upholstery in its seating as standard and can accommodate up to a maximum of seven passengers. Regardless of the arrangement, the front seats are cozy and provide enough headroom, legroom, and space for taller passengers, although there is less elbow room. Three children or two adults can sit in the second-row seats with moderate comfort, but the third row is too small and should only be used for children. The CX-9 comes with optional leather upholstery, heating, and cooling up front, which makes it look and feel even better.

The cabin is well insulated which results in avoiding road, wind, and engine noise at high acceleration. It reclines for providing better long-distance sleep, however, the Mazda CX-9 has less cargo room than the majority of midsize SUVs with three rows. The space behind the third row is 14.4 cubic feet, 38.2 cubic feet when these seats are folded, and 71.2 cubic feet when all of the back seats are folded.

2023 Mazda CX-9 vs 2022 Kia Telluride

The Mazda CX-9 offers off-road traction assist as standard which you will not find in the Kia Telluride, along with that the Mazda CX-9 starts with the standard three-zone automatic climate control that allows you and the rear passengers in the second row to select individual temperature preference, the same cannot be said for the Kia Telluride as its dual-zone automatic climate control doesn’t provide any customization. Lastly, Mazda allows you to upgrade to a 12-speaker system whereas the Kia Telluride gets a maximum of 10 speakers, nonetheless, Mazda is hard to match against it.

2023 Mazda CX-9 vs 2022 Honda Pilot

Whether you choose the Honda Pilot or the Mazda CX-9 you’ll notice a few similarities, but the Mazda CX-9 has a significantly higher torque which becomes a big asset for hilly roads and it offers an AWD drivetrain as standard with off-road traction, while the Honda Pilot starts with an FWD drivetrain. For smooth and stable handling the CX-9 equips a wheelbase that measures 115.3 inches which is 4.3 inches longer than the Honda Pilot.

2023 Mazda CX-9 vs 2022 Toyota Highlander

The two SUVs seem to be fairly evenly matched at first appearance. The chiseled exterior and curved lines of the 2022 Toyota Highlander give a striking, athletic style that is difficult to ignore. In contrast, the CX-9's sleek British front grille finish and LED lighting add refinement to its sporting appearance. On the other hand, the Mazda CX-9 is a perfect comfort treat for long driving and off-road conditions along with a better pickup speed making it a clear winner.

Final Verdict

Yes, we recommend the 2023 Mazda CX-9 as it offers a comfortable, athletic, extremely fun to drive and offers an advanced suite of safety features for most families with an adequate cargo capacity and stylish design.
