Over the past few years, Mazda 3 has been one of the favorite choices of the people when it comes to compact cars, for which its top-notch interiors, fun-to-drive personality and easy-to-use infotainment system are to be appreciated. Mazda has achieved excellence in category like handling capabilities of its hatchback, the Mazda 3. The Mazda 3 has also proved itself to be one of the best choices for a hatchback to buy in an affordable range. This year, Mazda has come up with mind blowing interior as well as exterior changes introducing the all-new 2017 Mazda 3 hatchback.

The 2017 Mazda 3 Hatchback starts at a base price tag of $19,095 which shoots all the way up to $23,895 for the top-of-the-line. The Mazda 3 rolls out in three trims namely, the Mazda 3 Sport (base trim), Mazda 3 Touring (mid trim) and the Mazda 3 Grand Touring (top trim). The hatchback comes with front-wheel drive as standard and all-wheel drive as optional powered by single combination option of 6-speed manual transmission and 2.0 liter inline-4 engine.

The Mazda 3 comes equipped with safety features which includes antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, active front head restraints, a rearview camera, front side airbags and side curtain airbags. Some of the unique safety features in its class include low-speed forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and a blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert. A few more optional safety features like lane departure warning & intervention system and mitigation/braking system are available on the Grand Touring trim.

Features

The Mazda 3 offers three trims for the year 2017. The base trim, ‘Sport’ , provides quite a lot of features like the ones provided in mid/top trims such as air conditioning, power windows and doors, Bluetooth connectivity, keyless ignition, steering mounted stereo controls for its infotainment system.

The mid trim, ‘Touring’, starts at $22,395 and offer a variety of great features such as automatic on/off headlights, heated power side mirrors, rain sensing windshield wipers and so on. With around $4000 hike in the sport trim, the ‘Touring’ trim provides mostly all the features present in the sport trim or probably better ones than in the sport trim along with extra features.

The top-of-the line trim, ‘Grand Touring’, has a price tag $23,895 against which it provides excellent features that are already present in the mid trim or replaces features with great enhancement from the touring trim along with extravaganza like the power sliding- glass sunroof and interior sunshade, Bi-LED Headlights with auto leveling and so on the list continues.

We Recommend

Out of all the trim levels, the Grand Touring would be the best choice for the extreme variety of excellent features that it provides under the budget of $25,000. The 2017 Mazda 3 Grand Touring trim not only provides a great number of features but most of the features are automation based instead of manual ones with good quality materials, which brings us to great surprise. On the other hand, it is not necessary to get the top trim for you to enjoy good things of Mazda 3 as the base trim ‘Sport’ also won’t make you regret.

Engine

The 2017 Mazda 3 hatchback comes in two engine options depending on the trim level you choose. The base engine is the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that produces about 155 horsepower and 150 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is powered by 6-speed manual transmission.

The mid and the top trim comes equipped with only one engine option, which is a 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine. The engine churns out a whopping 184 horsepower and 185 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is powered by 6 speed manual transmission as well as 6 speed automatic transmission along with manual shifters. Both the engines produces power from their 4 cylinders.

The engines are punchier while delivering power out to the wheels. The base engine may feel a little sluggish to generate power but manages to deliver a decent acceleration. On the other hand, the 2.5-liter engine produces excellent power and acceleration that may put its rivals in a tensed situation.

Acceleration

Despite of producing very less number in terms of power while compared to its rivals, the Mazda 3 hatchback takes just 7.4 seconds to reach the 60 MPH mark. The low power accounts in poor quarter-mile numbers as the car take 15.7 seconds to do so.

Honda Civic is the fastest car as it goes to 60 MPH from nil in just 6.9 seconds whereas, the Kia Rio is the slowest of them taking 8.5 seconds to do so. Kia however, makes it back in the quarter-mile test as it is the quickest car to do so. It takes just 15.2 seconds while all other rivals lack behind with milliseconds.

Ride and Handling

The 2017 Mazda 3 gains marks in this section, it may not be as silent on the inside as the Golf or as good in ride quality as the Civic but the Mazda 3 surely is a great and fun ride for the value we pay. The handling is responsive at needed times and provides great drive under both, high and low speeds. The steering holds the grip around corners making it a smooth curved drive every time.

Braking

The Mazda 3 hatchback fails to impress with its braking power and it stops from 60 MPH in just 127 feet. It has got discs of 11-inches in front and 10.4-inches in the rear. The brake pedal response is good but is a bit slow to react in panic stops.

Civic is the winner here too as it takes just 115 seconds to come to complete stop from 60 MPH thanks to its light weight chassis. Forte stands equal to Mazda 3 in terms of braking taking 127 feet to come to standstill.

Fuel Economy

The fuel economy of the 2017 Mazda 3 Hatchback is one of the mind-blowing factors of it. The hatchback impresses us by delivering 37 mpg on highway and around 27 mpg in the city. The fuel economy factor remains the strongest point of the 2017 Mazda 3 Hatchback delivering 37 mpg (combined) while the best fuel economy is delivered by the Honda Civic, around 39 mpg (combined).

Interior

The moment you enter the cabin of the Mazda 3 , you feel ample of space to comfortably to seat in. The hatchback has tried to match the number of passenger volume with that of ts rivals’. The rear seats however make you enter into them with relatively small door apertures and is quite uncomfortable on legroom when compared to its rivals. The middle seat position is cramped in all directions. Most of the adults won’t be able to fit in 5 of themselves for a long drive.

Seating and Comfort

The front seats of the hatchback has great comfort on under-thigh and lumbar support. The problem lies only on the seating comfort of the rear seats which may turn to be quite claustrophobic for three people in the rear row. The hatchback also gets 6 way power adjustable driver seat with manual lumbar on the mid and the top trim.

The replacement of manual handbrake with electronic handbrake has increased some some on the front cabin. The tilt and telescopic steering wheel helps to comfortably settle the driver’s knees. The overall seating and comfort has been upgraded and is better than previous year Mazda 3.

Infotainment System

The infotainment system on the Mazda 3 is not necessarily going to impress you. It’s not the case that Mazda has not tried and put its great efforts in to this section but they could have done a better job. The base trim sports a 7-inch touchscreen display and 6 speaker sound system of the Bose and to talk of big things it has 9 speaker sound system on the top trim but the major issue lies within integration. The Mazda 3 lack Apple CarPlay and Android Mobile Integration.

Some of the interior features are :

  • Adaptive Cruise Control (optional)
  • Vehicle Anti-theft System
  • Auto off headlights
  • Adjustable steering wheel
  • Intermittent wipers
  • Heads-up display
  • Universal garage door opener (optional)
  • Moonroof (optional)
  • AUX Audio input
  • MP3 Player
  • HD radio

Cargo Space

The cargo space of the 2017 Mazda 3 hatchback may also disappoint its customers as its the lowest space available in its class. The Mazda 3 tends occupy quite less number of baggages as compared to its rivals. Overall, the boot space is decent enough to be compromised.

Exterior

Dimensions and Weight

The first and foremost thing that makes the Mazda 3 an eye candy is the sleek and sporty design. The hood of the hatchback is quite long and makes you feel as if you are driving a sedan while the rear bumper has undergone some changes as compared to 2016 Mazda 3. The hatchback sports a big chrome-garnished grille in the front making it look aggressive.

The Mazda 3 has the tallest ground clearance amongst its rivals which makes you drive around on any terrain without hitting anything from the beneath. The Mazda 3 also tends to have quite long length in its structure providing good amount of headroom to all the passengers.

Exterior Features

Some of the great exterior features on the Mazda 3 hatchback are :

  • i-ELOOP regenerative braking system
  • Panic Alarm
  • Keyless ignition
  • Hands-free entry
  • Turn signal in mirrors
  • i-ACTIVESENSE Safety package

The base trim provides 16 inch alloy wheels while the mid and the top trim provides 18 inch alloy wheels for the Mazda 3.

Safety

Some of the safety features include:

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • ABS And Driveline Traction Control
  • Side Impact Beams
  • Low Tire Pressure Warning
  • Curtain 1st And 2nd Row Airbags
  • Airbag Occupancy Sensor
  • Outboard Front Lap And Shoulder Safety Belts -inc: Rear Center 3 Point, Height Adjusters and Pretensioners
  • Back-Up Camera

Competition

Honda Civic Hatchback (LX)

The Honda Civic hatchback has an advantage over Mazda 3 for features like standard alloy wheels, automatic headlights and auto climate control while the Mazda 3 Touring has slight advantage of standard heated front seats, power driver’s seat and leather wrapped steering wheel. Overall, both the hatchbacks are comparably equipped when loaded but the Civic might win for its superior turbocharged engine and better rate of depreciation.

Volkswagen Golf (S)

The Volkswagen Golf (S) could be a direct go-go for buyers who love to have sporty ride to work whereas the Mazda 3 is the winner for the buyers who need a simple, efficient commuting with plenty of value.

Kia Forte5 (LX)

The Kia Forte5 (LX) would be quite affordable for a lot of people but it falls back in case of power delivery, power production, fuel economy and few safety features. The Mazda 3 would be a great choice over the Forte5 due to its premiumness and unique mind-blowing features.

Final Verdict

The 2017 Mazda 3 does not disappoint even a single bit to prove its reliability, fun ride quality and stability along with its enjoyable premiumness and quality features. It narrows down to a point where the buyers may end up choosing between Honda Civic Hatchback or the Mazda 3 Hatchback.

Overall, the Honda Civic holds an upper edge for many standard features that it provides against the Mazda 3 but the 2017 Mazda 3 could be the best choice if you need a simple, elegant and premium car which not only provides a variety of features in its base as well as higher trims but also provides you complete value for your money.
