Decades into production, the current generation Miata still follows the same recipe with a more aggressive and sporty design. For 2020, the MX-5 Miata received plenty of updates like a new keyfob, updated badging, and new color options. The affordable convertible market is fairly limited and includes rivals like the Fiat 124 Spider, Mustang convertible, and the Mini Cooper convertible.

2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata Features

The range starts with the basic sport model which gets features like 16-inch alloys, LED lighting, cruise control, and a 7-inch infotainment system as standard. Upgrading to the Club model adds a lot more luxuries like a Bose sound system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity, bigger 17-inch alloys, heated seats, and some styling updates like a rear spoiler. 

For even more luxury, the range-topping Grand Touring trim also includes automatic headlights, navigation, leather upholstery, automatic climate control, and much more. For 2020, Mazda also introduced the 100th-anniversary edition which is based on the Grand Touring trim and gets a unique white pearl mica paint job with a burgundy red soft top along with plenty of badges and accents throughout.

The MX-5 Miata has been privileged with Mazda’s i-Activsense suite which comes as standard across all the trims. The safety nudge is just inspiring as advanced features like the Cruise Control are right there from the very base trim. The Limited-Slip Rear Differential Delete and Strut Tower Brace Delete can also be availed if one intends to. As far as the drive layout is concerned, all the trims get the standard rear-wheel drive-equipped tech-ends to avoid the much-expected oversteer.

Which Trim should you buy?

Sitting in the middle of the range, the Club trim offers the most value and includes several features over the base Sport model including heated seats, a premium audio system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity, bigger 17-inch wheels, and several styling updates like a rear spoiler. Several appearance packages are also available to spruce up the MX-5 Miata. Thus, one should simply give preference to this well-balanced trim over others.

With no turbocharging on the horizon, the 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata Convertible still comes equipped with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine as standard that produces a modest 181 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque. As always, the MX-5 is incomplete without the 6-speed manual transmission, which is still standard on all models.

The optional 6-speed automatic transmission is also surprisingly quick and offers more convenience. Following the typical sports car recipe, power is sent to the rear wheels with no all-wheel-drive on offer heaven as an option. Although 181 hp may not seem like much, the low curb weight allows the MX-5 Miata to reach 60 MPH in just 5.7 seconds and crosses the quarter-mile in 14.4 seconds.

With a lightweight aluminum body frame and a modest 181 hp on tap, the Mazda MX-5 easily outruns rivals like the Fiat 124 Spider and Mini Cooper. As expected, the Mustang Ecoboost with its powerful turbocharged powertrain trumps all its rivals, dipping below the 14-second quarter-mile mark. The Mustang even gets others with its top speed by a huge difference of at least 20 mph. The low-end rev band does not seem to strengthen the Mini Cooper figures which is quite disappointing.

How well does the 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata Convertible handle?

Being a compact sports car with a front-engined rear-drive layout, the MX-5 Miata is an excellent handler. The ride is firm and far from comfortable, with all bumps and undulations filtering into the cabin. The Club model gets a firmer setup for even better handling. Thanks to the lightweight body, the MX-5 is nimble through the corners. One of the advantages it has is the tire saving as the aforementioned aluminum frame goes easy on load transferring on the cornering tires.

All these handling characteristics make the MX-5 feel like a go-kart out on the road with excellent response and performance. Aerodynamically sound and devilish braking also tends to make it shine way too bright. Overall, the MX-5 is solid proof that you don’t need an outrageously powerful engine to have fun on the road.

Although the 11-inch brake rotors at both ends may look small on paper, the MX-5 Miata stops on a dime with plenty of braking performance and feedback thanks to the lightweight body. In fact, it manages to beat even bigger and expensive rivals in terms of braking distance, taking a hair over 100 feet for a dead stop from 60 MPH. Apart from this, it gets an array of other active features like the 4-wheel ABS along with Smart City Brake Support that is one of a kind in its superiority. This pushes the bar for others to match.

Despite the small braking hardware, the Mazda MX-5 matches the much bigger rotors of the Mustang Ecoboost. Though, heaviest among all, the Mustang also justifies its pricing in its braking dimensions. Meanwhile, the Mini Cooper is yet again a disappointing stature as it has a very unreasonable high braking travel of 134 ft as per comparison. Therefore, the Mini is in the status of a strong upgrade and weight reduction if it feels to continue in this category.

One of the biggest advantages of using a naturally aspirated 2.0L engine is in terms of efficiency. The MX-5 Miata returns an impressive 26 MPG in the city and 35 MPG on the highways. Although the small 11.9-gallon fuel tank does limit the highway range to 416 miles, it’s still impressive for a compact sports car. But giving all credits to powertrain efficiency would be unjust as the aluminum frame is as much responsible as the former. It can further be improved if there can be a slight change in the variable valve timing engineering segment along with a slightly more reduced gear step-up aspect factor.

In terms of efficiency, the Mini Cooper takes first place thanks to its smaller and efficient powertrain, followed by both the Mazda MX-5 Miata and Fiat 124 Spider. As expected, the heavier and more powerful Mustang is the least efficient, returning just 23 MPG combined. But then it is a matter of choice between economy and performance. It is logical to say that one gets both to some extent in the MX-5 Miata and that too at a reasonable price. Therefore, it is the best value return it seems.

Step into the cabin and you’ll be surprised by the quality and features on offer. Even the most basic model gets features like a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, turbine-style A/C vents, and comfortable sports seats for both passengers. Optional sports seats from Recaro are also available. As expected, the compact dimensions compromise storage space, and with just 4.4 cubic feet of trunk space because of the roof, the MX-5 Miata is severely limited in terms of practicality. If you overlook the limited storage space, the MX-5 offers a very comfortable interior with well-bolstered seats.

Both the Ford Mustang and Mini Cooper offer seating for two extra passengers along with a more spacious boot compared to the others where the Mustang is far more superior. The Fiat 124 Spider feels a little cramped in seating which makes it unfit for long hauling. One might complain about the seating positioning in any one of these as visibility is not an issue at all. Both the Mazda MX-5 Miata and Fiat 124 Spider get a compact roadster design and have a size smaller than the Ford Mustang. This assists them to have stability around the hard corners. Moreover, dependency on the tech-ends is further reduced as well. This might not sound too impressive but when the Moneyball and price decrement are realized, one would be no less amazed. Although both the MX-5 Miata and Fiat 124 are based on a similar platform with compact dimensions, While Mazda has focused more on the driving experience side of things, the Fiat 124 adds a bit of luxury and tries to be more comfortable and livable daily. Because of Fiat’s smaller engine, the 124 Spider is also more affordable. But, the driving experience is the main focus for compact sports cars like these, and in this section, the MX-5 is still the clear winner.

The Ford Mustang looks like a behemoth with a bigger turbocharged engine and seating for four. With the latest generation, Ford has finally improved handling significantly and it can keep up with most of its competitors. Because of its more powerful drivetrain and larger dimensions, the Mustang is easily more practical and versatile with better performance than the MX-5. With all this in mind, the Mustang may seem like the better pick of the two, but when it comes to driving experience and handling, the MX-5 is still leagues ahead.

Unlike the MX-5, the Mini Cooper is a small hatchback with practical interiors. Despite its tiny size, the MINi can fit in two more passengers than the Mazda and haul more cargo. The playful handling makes the MINI an excellent city runabout for daily duties, but performance-wise, the MX-5 runs rings around the MINI. With a superior layout, the Mazda is just as quick as the MINI with excellent control and addictive handling. Even with all its performance, the MX-5 also manages to undercut the MINI in terms of pricing.

Fortunately, even after being on sale for decades, the MX-5 still hasn’t lost that simple sports car charm that Mazda has mastered over the years. With excellent dynamics, handsome styling, and an affordable price tag, it’s easy to see how the Mazda MX-5 became so popular. An added bonus is the standard convertible body style which makes it even more fun. The convertible body style also severely limits cargo capacity. Despite its shortcomings, the 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata Convertible is still the benchmark among compact sports cars.
