2017 Mclaren 570GT Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Most supercars give preference to performance over luxury and some are even out and out road scorchers with complete disregard for creature comforts. But, the British car manufacturer Mclaren has introduced a car which is not only a menacingly fast but also soothingly comfortable and it's called the 2017 Mclaren 570GT.

Unlike its more track oriented cousin, the 570s, the 570GT has softer suspension setup to make the car more comfortable on the road. The steering ratio has also been altered to make the car ease into corners rather than darting into them.

Overall Rating

There is also enhanced storage in the form of a hatch. The hatch opens from the passenger side of the vehicle allowing access to the so-called touring deck. It is big enough for a small overnight bag and is fully insulated and leather-lined, ensuring contents aren’t cooked by the mid mounted engine. The Mclaren 570GT promises to be a fine blend between racecar and a luxury car.

2017 Mclaren 570GT Engine

"Revving the engine past 3000 rpm spooks fellow motorists who react as if they’ve just heard an ambulance. Send the engine to the 8200-rpm redline and the twin-turbo, flat-crank 3.8-liter V-8 effectively delivers a shock-and-awe campaign that’ll make people run for cover." - Car and Driver

Engine and Transmission

The Mclaren 570GT is in the recent bandwagon of cars that have embraced turbocharged low displacement engines as it features a 3.8L twin turbo V8. The turbo charger helps boost the torque figure to a whopping 443 lb ft while producing 562 hp. The engine is mated to a 7-speed automatic gearbox producing accurate and precise gear changes.

The 570GT is the most expensive car in the segment at almost $200,000. However, the most powerful car in the segment is the Acura NSX coupe which undercuts the Mclaren by almost $50,000.

With a 0-60 mph timing of 2.9 seconds, the 570GT is fastest in the segment and only 1/10 of second ahead of the Acura NSX. Mercedes Benz AMG GT S and Audi R8 both take 3.2 seconds and 3.5 seconds respectively to complete the same sprint

The Mclaren 570GT features a 14.6-inch rotor in the front and a 13.8-inch rotor at the rear. The braking efficiency is not as good as the 570S with the ceramic brakes. But, it's certainly not something you\u2019ll find yourself complaining about.

The McLaren 570GT with a segment lightest curb weight of 3269 lbs is the naturally the segment leader with least stopping distance of 95 feet from 60 mph. Following it closely is the AMG GT S at 100 feet.

2017 Mclaren 570GT Interior

"The 570GT could be driven daily, but it doesn't completely escape the ergonomic challenges that many supercars face; being a few inches off the ground and having fancy doors come with trade-offs." - Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

Although the space stats for the Mclaren 570GT is not available you can expect the car to feature uber comfortable bucket seats made of carbon fiber and draped in expensive feel-good materials.

With the available stats, the Acura NSX is the most spacious car in the segment

The Mclaren 570 GT features a 7-inch infotainment screen mounted in the center of the dash. The screen appears and operates just like modern day tablets. However, the overall MMI configuration is tricky to use and almost gimmicky in nature. This area definitely requires some amount of refinement to match the overall level of refinement on the car.

Cargo Volume

Being a GT, the 570GT features specially crafted storage areas to complement the nature of the car. The special segment is able to fit 12 cube.feet of cargo. Not only is it able to fit a couple of small duffle bags efficiently, but it is also well insulated from the mid-mounted engine to avoid excessive heating of the area.

The 570 GT leads the segment in terms of cargo space while being followed in 2nd place by the Mercedes Benz AMG GT C roadster at 10.1 cube.feet of space.

2017 Mclaren 570GT Exterior

"The biggest difference between the 570S and 570GT is the latter's rear styling, which incorporates a hatch for additional cargo. It's beautifully integrated, however, and complements the lines beautifully. And there are a lot of lines, from the various vents front and rear and along the sides. Then there are the signature McLaren "dihedral" doors, which open dramatically up and out." - Kelley Blue Book

Dimension and Weight

The Mclaren with its dropping roofline and glass back is awesome to look at. The car features some of the most well balanced exteriors that follows British elegance with an overall graceful look from the outside. It is also one of the longest car in the segment at 178.4 inches.

2017 Mclaren 570GT Competition

McLaren 570GT vs Mercedes Benz AMG GT C Roadster

The Mercedes Benz AMG GT C Roadster is another car that offers open-air thrills with exhilarating performance. While the McLaren is more of an elegant and gentleman-ish grand tourer, the Merc follows a more barbarous approach. The car is endlessly long and features a giant grille up front.

Although the Mclaren 570GT is a \xa0more powerful and a sleeker looking vehicle, one can\u2019t rule out that the Merc too is brilliant at what it does while being much cheaper than the Mclaren.

McLaren 570GT vs Audi R8

The Audi R8 is the flagship sports car by the German auto giant. In the age of turbocharged engines, the R8 features a naturally aspirated V8. The power delivery is seamless throughout the power band. The car is also extremely visually appealing but it falls just behind the new age look of the 570 GT. When it comes to interiors, the quality is unmatched with clutter-free spaces that allow you to focus on driving pleasures of the vehicle.

All in all, the 570 GT is a much finer track tool than the R8 but the R8 offers a unique experience of naturally aspirated motor that a turbo car can never offer.

McLaren 570GT vs Acura NSX

The Acura NSX is a $150,000 sports car by Honda. It features a hybrid powertrain that works flawlessly and is probably one of the better ones in the hybrid segment. The car follows the legacy of the legendary NSX that wooed away buyers in the early 2000s. While there is no denying that the Acura NSX is a fine track tool but it falls short of the preciseness of the 570GT even after the latter is tuned more conservatively,

It might be hard for folks to wrap their heads around a $150,000 Honda which is bound to hurt is an overall appeal. In all honesty, the Mclaren 570GT is just the better one amongst the two.

2017 Mclaren 570GT Final Verdict

Even after sporting a GT logo, the Mclaren does amazingly well for as a race car. The interiors are not top of the line good, but even then, they're finely crafted to do justice to the $200,000 price tag. The driving dynamics of the car are just a marvelous feat of engineering that even the more intense and focused track cars would find hard to triumph. All in all, if you can afford the heavy price tag, this is the car to buy in the segment.
