The McLaren 570S is a standout performer among convertible mini-supercars. It comes with a lower capacity engine tuned to produce plenty of power and torque, enough to smoke more powerful rivals with larger capacity engines. It’s not just about raw power or speed, but the 570S Spider also comes with precise handling and aggressive weight management that makes it a beast on the road as well as track. For 2022 the 570S Spider comes unchanged with no major upgrades or changes.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The engine under the hood is the same 3.8 L twin-turbocharged V8 mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission powering the rear wheels. Pricing is expected to start at around $212,000 for the 2022 model and there are plenty of optional features, customization options, and packages to choose from. The McLaren 570S Spider competes with the Ferrari Portofino Convertible, Aston Martin DB11 V8 Volante Convertible, and the Porsche 911 Turbo S Convertible.

Features

The 2022 McLaren 570S Spider would be available in just a single trim option expected to start at around $212,000 and would come with numerous customization options. The engine under the hood would be the same 3.8 L V8 engine mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission. The optional packages include two Carbon Fiber Exterior Packs, a Security Pack, Luxury Pack, and a Track Pack consisting of a lot of track-oriented features. The following table shows the detailed list of standard features and the expected price of the 2022 McLaren 570S-

We Recommend

The McLaren 570S Spyder is a single standalone trim. However, it could be equipped with a lot of available options and packages. We recommend the Luxury Pack that adds 8-way powered sports seats with the adjustability, heating, and memory settings, a power-adjustable steering column, an upgraded Bowers & Wilkins 12 speaker branded audio system, soft close doors, and McLaren branded floor mat set. These features are also available as individual options along with many others but it would be nice to opt for the package as these are nice and needy upgrades.

Release Date

Even though we haven’t received any official updates from McLaren, the 2022 570S is expected to arrive later on in 2022. We don’t expect it to launch in the early months of 2022, but it would likely arrive mid-year.

Engine and Performance

3.0/10

The powerhouse under the hood of the 2022 McLaren 570S Spider is a 3.8L twin-turbocharged V8 engine. Don’t underestimate this lower displacement as it puts out a beefy 562 hp and 443 lb-ft of maximum power and torque. This engine is mated to a 7-speed automatic Seamless Shift Gearbox (SSG) transferring the power to the rear wheels. There are three available powertrain modes which are Normal, Sport, and Track. A low exit stainless steel exhaust system is also present in the 570S Spider which puts out a beautiful soundtrack that is appealing to the ears.

2022 Mclaren 570S Spider driving view

The 570S Spider can achieve a speed of 60mph in just 3.1 seconds which is super-impressive and the quarter-mile is crossed in 10.7 seconds. The handling on the track as well as on the road is precise, extremely well balanced and that results in a superfast fun-to-drive machine. However, the practicality of the 570S Spider is not appreciable as it is hard to maneuver in the urban jungle and especially at slow speeds and it is not at all advisable to get this one as a daily driver which is actually obvious.

The standard adaptive damping ‘S’ tune suspension delivers impeccable stability while on the track as well as during speed runs on the road, but comfort and ride quality are not at all the strong points of this suspension setup. The carbon-ceramic brakes with McLaren brake steer are also superb performers delivering a progressive yet strong bite. But still, the fact is that there are rivals that could perform better on the track and still easier to drive around in the city, but it is an undeniable fact that the McLaren 570S Spider is an exhilarating sports convertible that can definitely rise up your adrenaline levels while putting a big smile on your face.

Considering the prices, power outputs, performance, and handling, there is a clear winner here which is the Porsche 911 Turbo S Convertible. There is no way nothing else compared here or in the price range that could even get close to the Turbo S. The Turbo S is not priced much above any of the competitors here, in fact, it is significantly lower priced than the Aston Martin, but it is the most powerful one here and the only one to produce more than 600hp. It is also the fastest here, gaining a speed of 60mph in just 2.2 seconds while the rest of the competition could only do this in more than 3 seconds. The handling and ride comfort are also on point, and while all these machines including the McLaren are great cars, nothing matches the performance of the Porsche.

Fuel Economy

5.0/10

Even with the Eco start-stop system equipped in the 570S Spider, the car doesn’t deliver considerable fuel economy numbers, even if we consider the fact that it is a high-performance vehicle. The 570S Spider provides a fuel economy of 15 mpg in the city, 22 on the highway, and a combined efficiency of 18 mpg. These figures are not that much and combined with a 19-gallon fuel capacity, it delivers a range of around 285 miles in the city, 418 miles on the highway, and a combined efficiency of 342 miles.

The Aston Martin is the most efficient machine while the Porsche 911 Turbo S Convertible outputs the lowest efficient figures. The Aston Martin also provides the most range followed by the Ferrari Portofino, both of which deliver a combined range above 400 miles. The Porsche is an absolute failure in the fuel economy department and combined with a much lower capacity fuel tank, only manages to deliver a combined range below 300 miles.

Interior

3.0/10

The super-aggressive weight reduction measures used by McLaren have resulted in an ultra-simple cabin and dashboard inside the 570S Spider. But there is no compromise made in terms of material quality as everything used is of superior quality and looks and feels nice. The controls and buttons are placed ergonomically and are easy to reach and nothing is uncluttered. There is also an abundance of luxury materials inside the cabin including hand-stitched leather and Alcantara. There is enough space for the driver and co-passenger while ride quality might not be the best.

2022 Mclaren 570S Spider dashboard

The 570S Spider features an extended leather interior with textile headlining and manual sports seats which could be upgraded to power-adjustable sports seats with comfort entry/exit or even carbon fiber racing seats. The 570S Spider could also be specced with a Nappa sport/Nappa design/Nappa Alcantara interior with an Alcantara or Nappa leather headlining. There are also plenty of carbon fiber interior components available and the interior could be specced according to your individual preference. The cargo capacity measuring 7.1 cu-ft is not that much but could actually carry some essential luggage.

All of these cars are extremely customizable and you can spec a version of these luxury supercars according to your likes and dislikes. They could be tilted towards the luxury side by including a lot of leather and Alcantara, or extremely sporty by adding more carbon fiber. The interior is luscious in all of them but the Porsche seems to provide a bit more ride comfort at slower speeds as well as in city driving situations. The following are some of the most important interior features in the 2022 McLaren 570S Spider-

  • Extended leather interior with textile headlining
  • Manual sports seats
  • Electrochromic dipping rear view interior mirror
  • Carbon Black leather steering wheel
  • Dual-zone climate control (temp)
  • Rear window heating element on glass/rear window
  • Manual adjust steering column (reach and rake)
  • Satin chrome brightwork

How intuitive is the car’s infotainment unit?

The 2022 McLaren 570S Spider comes with a McLaren IRIS infotainment unit with a 7-inch portrait touch screen monitor which has become a bit outdated now. The infotainment unit is not as visually impressive or intuitive as some of the more updated systems inside some rivals. The audio system is a 240-watt 4-speaker unit as standard while it is upgradable to an 8-speaker unit or even a more premium Bowers & Wilkins 12 speaker branded audio system consisting of a 14-channel, 1280W amplifier, two carbon fiber Rohacell sub-bass woofers, five Kevlar mid-range drive units, and five aluminum Nautilus tweeters.

2022 Mclaren 570S Spider infotainment screen

The 570S Spider’s infotainment unit, however, lacks Android Auto and Apple CarPlay which is a bummer. The following are the standout infotainment features inside the 2022 McLaren 570S Spider-

  • 7-inch portrait touch screen monitor
  • On-board memory
  • Audio media player
  • AM/FM radio
  • SiriusXM
  • Bluetooth telephony
  • USB connectivity & AUX in
  • iPod / iPhone integration
  • IRIS navigation (including cluster turn-by-turn display)
  • McLaren 4-speaker audio system
  • McLaren Track Telemetry (MTT) with lap time function

Exterior

4.0/10

The McLaren 570S Spider features a Single piece carbon fiber MonoCell ll body structure and an exposed engine bay which showcases the longitudinally placed rear mid-engine. The color choices include two standard options which are silver and blue along with ten special colors and nine Elite ones. You can also further go for some bespoke color choices that come under the ‘MSO defined’ collection. The two-piece retractable roof setup has been so efficiently constructed that it only adds around 40 lbs to the coupe version of the 570S which shows the advantages of the carbon fiber mono cell construction. There are plenty of aero bits surrounding the 570S Spider including a rear spoiler, front splitter, aero blades, side skirts, and inserts, and all of them come in a Dark Palladium shade as standard while they could be upgraded to carbon fiber components if you prefer that.

2022 Mclaren 570S Spider

The dihedral doors look impressive and also makes ingress and egress while also manages space efficiently. The signature McLaren Speedmark lights consist of full LED headlights with automatic headlight leveling in the front which along with the beak-like front end and splitter contributes to the sporty and aggressive nature of this car. The wheels in the 570S Spider are Sport 10-Spoke cast alloy wheels as standard wrapped around with Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires while they could be upgraded to twin 5-spoke or 10-spoke lightweight alloys or even 10-spoke super-lightweight forged alloys for better performance.

This is somewhere all of these machines excel. They are all extremely beautiful and a feast to look at. The McLaren however, manages to keep the weight down maximum. It has the lowest curb weight which has been achieved through the monocoque carbon fiber construction and opting for the lightweight and super-lightweight wheels further push the weight down. The Aston Martin DB11 stands apart as being the largest and heaviest one while also being the one with the lowest ground clearance. The following are the standout exterior features of the 2022 McLaren 570S Spider-

  • Sport 10-Spoke Cast Alloy Wheels
  • Full LED headlights with automatic headlight leveling
  • Automatic LED daytime running lights & rear lights
  • Central High Mounted Stop Lamp (CHMSL)
  • Dual function LED rear fog / reverse light
  • Dihedral Doors
  • Glass wind deflector
  • Two-piece retractable hard top roof
  • Silver exhaust finisher

Safety

3.0/10

The 2022 McLaren 570 S Spider comes with impressive stopping power to bring this beast to a halt. The braking setup includes carbon-ceramic brakes with 6-piston calipers in the front and 4-piston calipers in the rear. This combo only takes 105 ft to bring the 570S to a stop which is an impressive distance. If you need even more stopping power, you could always opt for the optional cast brakes with 4-piston calipers in the front and rear.

There is also a set of driver assistance and safety features embedded into this McLaren that makes it a safe space. Both NHTSA, as well as IIHS, has not tested or rated the 570S Spider, but that is obvious considering the fact that the price point and segment are way out of their league. But the following safety features included in this machine ensure that this one is a safe vehicle-

  •  Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
  •  Dynamic Electronic Stability Control (DESC)
  •  Traction Control (TC)
  •  Hill hold assist
  •  Cruise control
  •  Electronic parking brake

Competition

6.0/10

2022 McLaren 570S Spider vs 2021 Ferrari Portofino Convertible

The 2021 Ferrari Portofino Convertible is one among the ‘affordable’ Ferraris, which itself is a funny thing to be heard. It packs a slightly more powerful engine under the hood but slightly lower performance. However, the McLaren delivers better handling and is the more ready-to-rev, aggressive machine while the Ferrari is slightly more composed and delivers quite a bit more comfort and better ride quality. Both models look amazing from the outside, but the Ferrari looks more luxurious while the McLaren looks more sporty.

2021 Ferrari Portofino Convertible

2022 McLaren 570S Spider vs 2021 Aston Martin DB11 V8 Volante Convertible

The 2021 Aston Martin DB11 Volante is one of the most beautiful convertibles you can get for your money. It is extremely wide and looks like a super-luxurious yacht. The McLaren however, is the more powerful and faster machine offering improved handling and driving dynamics. The Aston Martin on the other hand is a more luxurious and GT-looking machine offering impressive drivability combined with superior ride quality and comfort. It also offers a much better fuel economy compared to McLaren. For serious speed runs you can consider the McLaren at the cost of practicality, but for a fast, beautiful, comfortable allrounder, the Aston Martin is the best choice.

2021 Aston Martin DB11 V8 Volante Convertible

2022 McLaren 570S Spider vs 2021 Porsche 911 Turbo S Convertible

The 2021 Porsche 911 Turbo S Convertible is an absolute miracle. It comes with blazing edge hardware and razor-sharp performance. The power figures and performance of the Turbo S topples the McLaren and the Porsche truly dominated the segment and the price point. The Porsche truly has an edge over McLaren and all others in the segment. The McLaren only has a better fuel economy and range to keep up with the Porsche. But the Porsche again tackles the 570S Spider with better ride quality and interior comfort. Overall, there is no doubt that Turbo S Convertible is the straight-out better, and superior choice among these.

2021 Porsche 911 Turbo S Convertible

Final Verdict

The 2022 McLaren 570S Spider is an amazing car that comes with a powerful, high-revving engine under the hood. The power delivery and performance are exhilarating and the car just loves to accelerate to the end of the rev band. The 570S offers a lot of customization options on the inside as well as outside while the standard configuration is a bit off-putting. The interior is well-made and of high quality and there is an abundance of carbon fiber on the inside which could further be increased by choosing more optional carbon fiber components.

The ride quality is not the best in the segment but a performance machine is adequate. However, if you want to spend your hard-earned money on a superb convertible car, you should go for the Porsche 911 Turbo S. That one offers much more power and better performance coupled with better ride quality and a more luscious interior. This doesn’t mean that the 570S Spider is a bad car, but the Porsche is obviously the better choice here, as it offers a lot more for a slightly higher price.
