It was just like yesterday when McLaren was out to win with the release of the new longtail convertible 600LT Spider in 2019, and two years down the line we can surely comment that it has exceeded expectations. It is one of the three cars from McLaren that have earned the reputation of 'Longtail' badge, yet another accolade to the manufacturer. The 2022 McLaren 600LT Spider has an unchanged twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 engine still capable of going from 0-62mph in 2.9 seconds. In the McLaren 600LT Spider, one could find the phenomenal style, power, and all-around sportiness present in spades. The automobile world is littered with what-ifs and how-could-have-been, but this car has achieved what very few others did – fulfilling the ultimate driving fantasy with glee and vigor.

The 2022 McLaren 600LT will continue with no changes to its 2020 iteration. Like all McLarens, it is rear-wheel drive and of course, that marvelous hardtop roof you see is retractable. The 2022 McLaren 600LT Spider is the only version available in the lineup and is priced at $259,000(est.) which is so expensive that it could cost a fortune. However, we think you will get your money's worth with this Longtail because it offers on-track prowess that your enthusiast would kill for. Only a few could rival the true persona of the 2022 McLaren 600LT Spider, some of which include Ferrari Portofino M, Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet, and Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spyder.

2022 Mclaren 600LT Features

The McLaren 600LT Spider is a high-performance 2-seater convertible for hardcore enthusiasts who are ready to pay approx. $259,000 for the privilege. The 600LT Spider uses the same basic design as the 600LT Coupe combining it with the open-air driving concept. This car is built on a carbon-fiber MonoCell II monocoque chassis and has a 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, rear-wheel-drive, 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, adaptive damping suspension. Carbon-ceramic brakes and pads are incorporated to bring this beast to a halt efficiently.

To have real-time performance insight and control of the car, the Active Dynamics Panel proves to be a great help. The interiors of the McLaren 600LT also feature lightweight carbon fiber and Alcantara. The performance orientation is visible in interiors that do not have anything unnecessary that deviates the driver or car from performing better. It has a retractable folding hardtop roof, elongated tail, fixed rear wing, and top-exit exhausts that enhance the performance while simultaneously elevating the style statement. The dihedral doors, dynamic body linings, and 10-spoke ultra-lightweight wheels furthermore form the part of a scintillating silhouette.

We Recommend

The 2022 600LT Spider is an exotic longtail drop-top McLaren convertible. With its high-spirited engine performance and stellar driving capabilities, it has garnered tremendous demand. Considering the car's weight and power, it is really impressive that it can zoom off that fast. The infotainment system lags, but the rest of the interior is exceptional. The exterior design is sleek, aerodynamic, and sporty which screams "race car". The McLaren 600LT Spider has high safety ratings, good warranty terms. It provides a lot of customization options like exterior and interior colors, wheel options, interior packages, and much more. Thus, although it is expensive, it has a cult following. Many people would be thrilled to have this one in their collection.

2022 Mclaren 600LT Engine and Performance

6.0/10

The McLaren 600LT Spider is a street-legal yet focused track-oriented version. The 2022 McLaren 600LT is powered by a twin-turbo 3.8L V8 engine with 592 hp and 457 lb-ft of torque. This engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Acceleration from 0-60 mph takes 2.9 seconds while the car achieves a top speed of 201 mph. With such exhilarating acceleration, the McLaren 600LT Spider will make the hair on your neck stand up. Features like Inertia push and Ignition cut help this beast take off and come to a halt with higher efficiency.

It features a carbon-fiber monocoque with an aggressively tuned race-optimized suspension system designed to bring the McLaren 600LT more firmly under control with reduced lift at high speeds for better visibility, straight-line stability, and confidence. This car has unique features which make it very agile and enable handling corners like a bat maneuvers mid-air. The elongated tail and carbon fiber fixed wing offer more downforce improving the stability further. McLaren's bodywork is an amazing art not only for the stunning views it provides but also for the way it boosts performance.

The brake-booster technology and Lightweight braking system using carbon-ceramic brake discs and pads are the ones that activate to stop this devil. We also cannot forget to mention the Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R high-performance tires without which this expeditious journey would not be quite possible. The McLaren 600LT offers 3 modes to choose from - Normal, Sport, and Track. These modes customize the ride quality and handling to deliver a different kind of driving experience in different scenarios. The Electronic Stability Control feature is also available to fine-tune the cornering cues on tracks. Finally, the dramatic thunderclap rumble from the top-exit exhaust system culminates the quench of a real enthusiast.

The Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet is the fastest car on this list, coming in at 60mph within 2.7 seconds, as it has the most power. The McLaren 600LT Spider is a lightweight, track-focused convertible with a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 engine that helps it complete a 0-60mph lap within 2.8 seconds. The Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spyder features a twin-turbo 3.9-liter V10 engine producing which although takes 3 seconds to sprint past 60 mph but reaches a top speed of 202 mph which is a bit elevated than others. Also, the dramatic driving experience and high levels of driving engagement add some fun-factor distinct from other rivals. Finally, the Ferrari Portofino M takes 3.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 199 mph.

2022 Mclaren 600LT Fuel Economy

9.0/10

Thinking of fuel efficiency while buying a high-performance car is just like considering pizza in terms of calories. Why would one even think of calories if they are hungry and/or crave for enjoying the spicy and delicious pizza? Similarly, combining both performance and fuel efficiency is a hard task to accomplish in today's hyper-competitive world.

But McLaren is here to make your life easier by offering a superbly engineered McLaren 600LT Spider that has been designed with aerodynamics in mind, as well as being lightweight, to minimize drag and increase fuel efficiency. The low chassis design reduces wind resistance and the downforce helps reduce air resistance. Additionally, these cars come equipped with carbon fiber of lightweight parts and equipment. All this helps achieve a decent average fuel economy of 18 miles per gallon.

The fuel economy of the 2022 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet is slightly better at 19mpg combined than the 2022 Ferrari Portofino M, the 2022 McLaren 600LT Spider, and the 2022 Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spyder. The Ferrari Portofino M and the 2022 McLaren 600LT Spider lie in the same range offering 18mpg combined, whereas the Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spyder stays last in the race with a combined mileage offering of 15mpg only. A thing to note here is that the Ferrari offers the biggest tank capacity of 21.1 gallons which makes it the least visiting vehicle to fuel stations.

2022 Mclaren 600LT Interior

7.0/10

The keyless entry and start is a noteworthy standard feature that helps one get easily inside and driving. The 2022 McLaren 600LT Spider is a two-seater, and it has an exclusive hard-top roof with an opening and closing system to enjoy open-air driving at times with an operating time of fewer than 15 seconds. Black sparkle metallic interior components having satin chrome brightwork is noticeable and gives a subtle lively shine inside.

The interiors are kept minimal to create a small "cocoon" or raw shell to make the 600LT Spider feel like it is lighter and purely performance-focused. This is done by completely neglecting the accommodation of things like glove boxes and carpets. The full Carbon Black Alcantara interior with tonal carbon black stitch work and a lockable center console can be seen inside. The Super Lightweight carbon fiber racing seats with fixed passenger seats, manually adjustable carbon black carbon fiber steering column, and a 12 o'clock marker on the steering wheel to gauge position indicates that things are kept as performance-oriented as possible.

The car also has a dual-zone automatic climate control system so that the cabin occupants remain at ease irrespective of the climate outside. It is truly one of the cars in the McLaren range most focused on performance, yet the 2022 McLaren 600LT Spider interiors are still of high quality. Many special optional features like Nappa leather finishes, power-adjustable heated memory front seats, a power-adjustable steering column, and soft-close doors are available either in the form of packages like Carbon fiber interior upgrade and Luxury pack or as a host of other standalone options.

The two-seater McLaren 600LT Spider offers a minimalist cockpit that includes cubby space only to accommodate things you need to take off in a hurry like a cell phone or wallet. The four-seater Ferrari Portofino M is similarly compact and tidy, and the lack of decent room in the rear makes us imagine if anyone will occupy the backseat(Tip: Use it to store stuff instead. The Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet is a similar case as the Ferrari Portofino.

The Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spyder, meanwhile, has an incredible driving experience but its cabin space is quite less than competitors. The Ferrari Portofino M offers, by far, the best space for cargo storage in comparison to the other vehicles mentioned which is followed closely by the Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet. Their trunk capacities are nearly double the amount offered by the Porsche McLaren 600LT Spider and the 2022 Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spyder. Some of the 2022 McLaren 600LT interior features are-

  • Keyless entry and start
  • Black sparkle metallic interior components
  • Super-Lightweight carbon fiber racing seats
  • Manually adjustable carbon fiber steering column
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control system

How intuitive is the 2022 McLaren 600LT Spider’s infotainment unit?

As already mentioned the performance-focused cockpit of the McLaren 600LT Spider does not have an awe-inspiring flashy infotainment system that could divert the driver's attention, yet the dash design and placement of the equipment are on fleek. That said, it includes a 7-inch portrait touchscreen monitor having McLaren Track Telemetry (MTT) with lap time function, 3 USB ports, and onboard memory function. Remember that, you can enjoy the convenience of only a Bluetooth phone connection, no navigation or audio system. But if someone wants the cabin to fill up with enticing music, an option of Bowers and Wilkins 12-speaker audio system is available. Some standout infotainment features include:

  • 7-inch portrait touchscreen monitor
  • McLaren Track Telemetry (MTT) with lap time function
  • 3 USB ports
  • Onboard memory function
  • Bluetooth phone connection
  • Bowers and Wilkins 12-speaker audio system(opt.)

2022 Mclaren 600LT Exterior

8.0/10

The aggressive design of the McLaren 600LT is visible in the front fascia that is specially tailored to the performance attributes and needs of fast and furious drivers. The sleek roofline, sharp creases, and arched headlights make the design bold and as beautiful as it is aggressive. The front splitter, 10-spoke Ultra-lightweight forged alloy wheels with silver finish, retractable hardtop roof, dihedral doors, LED taillights, and fixed rear wing collectively look epic. Dark Palladium exterior details make the car stunning to look at.

Keeping things 'Lightweight' is the key ingredient in the performance recipe of McLaren's designers. That's the reason they have used a lot of carbon fiber elements and components. Starting from the single piece MonoCell II carbon fiber chassis, to carbon fiber use in splitter, diffuser rear wing, rear bumper, side skirts, and rear spoilers underline the fact that the McLaren 600LT has some serious potential. The alien-eye-like taillights also give a distinct feel along with the exposed engine bay that is covered with a natural finish plenum cover.

At a ground clearance of 3.2 inches, the McLaren 600LT Spider comes in at the perfect height for many drivers and passengers. For those who like to use their vehicle for joyrides, this height may be less than ideal. However the clearance on other cars is not bad either, the Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet even matches the clearance of the McLaren 600LT Spider.

One thing that sets the McLaren 600LT Spider apart from its competitors is its length and width because it has peak figures in these aspects. The McLaren 600LT is the lightest in the segment that gives an advantage in terms of speed and agility. But a bit more advantage of lightweight is taken by the Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spider as it weighs less than 3500 pounds as compared to the remaining models. Some of the 2022 McLaren 600LT exterior features include:

  • Single piece MonoCell II carbon fiber chassis
  • 10-spoke Ultra-lightweight silver-finished forged alloy wheels
  • Retractable hardtop roof
  • Dihedral doors,
  • Fixed rear wing
  • Arched full-LED headlights

2022 Mclaren 600LT Safety

9.0/10

A high-performance car comes with a distinct list of demerits, one of which is no ratings from the IIHS or NHTSA. The McLaren 600LT is one such car that is deprived of NHTSA and IIHS crashworthiness ratings. The 2022 McLaren 600LT Spider is built on the single-frame Carbon MonoCell II carbon fiber chassis that not only helps in weight reduction but is very stiff and rigid. This means that this vehicle is engineered for the safety of true driving enthusiasts. It can go from 0-60 in 2.8 seconds and tops out at 201 MPH.

The 600LT Spider's carbon fiber construction and weight distribution ensure a low center of gravity, excellent stability, and agility. The aerodynamic design of the exterior enhances performance, engine cooling, and driver comfort. The safety features like Active Dynamic Panel, active damping suspension, airbags, ABS, Dynamic Electronic Stability Control, cruise control, and an electric parking brake form a collection of standard active and passive safety features that provide all-around protection to the occupants.

Full LED headlights with auto headlight leveling, automatic lights with rain light sensor, automatic LED DRLs, automatic LED taillights, SHMSL, and dual-function LED rear-fog/reverse light always ensure the best visibility even in bad weathers and conditions. There are also some optional safety features worth bagging like a rearview camera and front plus rear parking sensors that come on the Security pack. Speaking of security, there is also an alarm for doors, engine cover, luggage compartment, and tonneau. Some of the 2022 McLaren 600LT Spider safety features are:

  • Active Dynamic Panel
  • ABS
  • Dynamic Electronic Stability Control
  • Cruise control
  • Electric parking brake
  • Rearview camera(opt.)
  • Front and rear parking sensors(opt.)

2022 McLaren 600LT Spider vs 2022 Ferrari Portofino M

In the world of convertible supercars, every decision can be a tough one. But if you're going to pick between a McLaren 600LT Spider and a Ferrari Portofino M, the McLaren is the better option. Though the price may be higher, McLaren's high-performance engine and unmatched performance make it a worthy buy for a true speed demon, even though Ferrari Portofino M offers seating for four and much more cargo space.

2022 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet vs 2022 McLaren 600LT Spider

For people who are looking for an ultimate drop-top, the 2022 McLaren 600LT Spider is the better choice between the 2022 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet and the 2022 McLaren 600LT Spider. The 2022 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet is cheaper than the latter and has better power and acceleration figures. But once you get inside the cabin, the Porsche just lacks the feel of sitting in a supercar. The technology, interior refinement, and authentic supercar feel give McLaren an upper hand in this case.

2022 McLaren 600LT Spider vs 2022 Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spyder

Based on the prices stated previously in this article, you will find that the 2022 McLaren 600LT Spider costs less. But Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spyder is the ultimate supercar that delivers an unprecedented driving experience. Thus, amongst both, we would favor the Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spyder, because of its uncompromised performance factor.

2022 Mclaren 600LT Final Verdict

The new McLaren 600LT Spider is a masterpiece of McLaren engineering. It has the latest in automotive technology and although its engine horsepower is slightly less than rivals, the lightweight body and aerodynamics bring it in line with the competition in terms of acceleration. The interior is truly premium and it comes with many cool features that make driving feel like an authentic supercar experience. This sleek, fast, agile convertible is perfect for anyone looking for a top-notch driving experience or automotive nirvana for a decent price.
