Shining bright as part of the McLaren's Super Series, the McLaren 720s is a renowned name in the world of track-focused machines. The car is available in both coupe and convertible variants, but we will solely focus on the Spider variant. For 2022, the McLaren 720s Spider comes as a carryover model with no major changes to look forward to. The Spider variant, as before, will seat 2 people in its sport and a minimalistic interior composed of weight-reduction material all around.

Overall Rating

The 2022 McLaren 720s Spider will continue to impress with its performance which it acquires from a 4.4L Twin-Turbo V8 capable of putting out 710 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque. The exterior of the convertible comes embellished with all kinds of sporty cues such as 19" front alloy wheels & 20" rear alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tires, powered spoiler, etc. For 2022, the Spider variant of the McLaren 720s will go against its usual rivals such as the Ferrari 812 GTS, Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Convertible, and Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster.

We Recommend

As we mentioned before, the 2022 McLaren 720s is going to be an incredible choice for any person whether he/she wants an attractive showpiece in their garage or someone who seeks thrill from their vehicle. Choosing one trim out of the three available depends on this only. If you are a thrill seeker who wants to measure lap timings on a track, the top-end Performance trim will be the ideal choice. Otherwise, the Base trim in itself is packed with features adequately for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Release Date

Not a lot is available about the release date of the 2022 model of 720s since the brand is focusing on its new release by the name of McLaren Artura. So probably, we will be seeing the new 720s only after the end of 2021.

2022 Mclaren 720s Spider Engine and Performance

The Twin-Turbo 4.4L V8 at the back of the convertible is a treat as it manages to offer 710 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque. With so much firepower to push the car to the limits, McLaren has offered a paddle-shifted dual-clutch seven-speed transmission which is ultra-smooth and powers the rear wheels brilliantly, resulting in a thrilling experience on the track. There is no all-wheel-drive option available with the vehicle.

2022 McLaren 720s Spider 4.0L Engine

Since there are no major changes in its powertrain setup from the 2021 model, the convertible will still shoot to the 60 mph mark in just 2.7 seconds. Also, it will take the same time of 10.1 seconds to complete a quarter-mile dash. The lightweight structure along with the precise maneuvering prowess results in this convertible enjoying a respectable place in the heart of millions of thrill-seekers across the globe. The 2022 720s, as the 2021 model, will top out at 212 mph.

While Ferrari and Lamborghini hold a 6.5L Naturally Aspirated V12 engine under the hood and offer better power than the other two, the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera comes with a 5.7L Twin-Turbo V12 and manages to provide 5 hp more than McLaren’s 710 hp. When it comes to real-world performance, the Italian Bull stays ahead of rivals with the timing of 2.6 seconds in 0-60 mph, whereas the McLaren takes the top position, although by a slight margin of 0.1 seconds in the quarter-mile drag race. When comparing the top speed, the Lamborghini Aventador is all set to take your breath away with a top speed of 217 mph.

2022 Mclaren 720s Spider Fuel Economy

When roaring V8s and V12s are in the equation, one should not ever think about how much fuel the machine will be gulping on the streets. Since McLaren proudly owns a powerful twin-turbo V8 and does not come under your regular commuter cars, the EPA has not rated the convertible. However, looking at previous year’s figures and user reviews, we can expect the 2022 model to offer similar figures as last year's model, i.e., 15 mpg in the city, 22 mpg on the highway, and 18 mpg combined.

Range (City/Highway/Combined Miles)

*- Expected

The Naturally Aspirated V12s of Lamborghini and Ferrari might keep you happy with their exhaust notes but that comes at the cost of unimpressive fuel economy figures. Both McLaren and Aston Martin stand way ahead of their rivals with a combined mileage of 18 mpg. The discrepancy due to fuel economy is slashed partially as we start comparing the overall range of the convertible in the segment, however, the Aston Martin with 20.5 gallons of fuel tank offers the best in class range of 369 miles combined.

2022 Mclaren 720s Spider Interior

While the exterior of this Spider is breathtakingly gorgeous as it holds a cohesive and aesthetic design, the interior in contrast is way more minimalist and is centered towards the driver. Comfort has never been associated with supercars but McLaren with its 2022 720s has provided to the driver and the passenger at the front all kinds of luxury while also keeping the weight in check. The use of machined aluminum and top-of-the-class carbon fiber trim makes the cabin a comfortable yet luxurious experience from a supercar standpoint.

2022 McLaren 720s Spider Dashboard

All but Aston Martin DBS Superleggera in the competition come with a seating capacity of 2, while Aston Martin is more practical and offers space at the back for two people which can be filled by only kids or some luggage. When it comes to convenience features inside the cabin, the convertible has dual-zone climate control, a powered roof, tilt-and-telescopic steering, reclining driver and passenger seat, interior ambient lighting, heated and power-adjustable seats, and more. Apart from all of this, McLaren has offered 10 options for the interior, which is an exciting list in terms of customization.

Seating Capacity

Front Row (Headroom/Shoulder Room/Legroom; inches)

Rear Row (Headroom/Shoulder Room/Legroom; inches)

Cargo Capacity (cubic feet)

*- Expected

Since a lot is not available about the interior dimensions of a lot of these cars, it becomes difficult to come out with concrete recommendations. One thing that will remain the same with all the vehicles is the pain to escape from the low-slung seating position. While practicality has never been the measuring factor for any of these cars, we can say that McLaren has a bit more practicality than Lamborghini as it offers 0.2 cubic feet more cargo space than the latter. Standout interior features include:

  • Dual-zone climate control air conditioning
  • Heated seats
  • Leather upholstery
  • Powered seats
  • Ambient Lighting - interior

Infotainment System

As expected, the infotainment system offered with the base trim of the 720s is nothing exciting as it consists of a 7-inch infotainment screen along with a 4-speaker sound system. Few tech features like two USB ports, Bluetooth, and more are part of this setup as standard.

2022 McLaren 720s Spider Infotainment System

However, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are still missing from the configuration, which is a bummer. When it comes to the working and handling of the infotainment, it is not the best or smoothest system you’ll come across in the segment. Major infotainment features include:

  • 7-inch infotainment system
  • 4-speaker audio system
  • On-board memory system
  • Bluetooth telephony
  • 2 USB ports

2022 Mclaren 720s Spider Exterior

Often considered as one of the most beautiful and mature designs, and we can’t argue about that, the 2022 720s will continue to amaze the owners and the public alike. A true head-turner in general, the convertible variant brings much more flair with the drop-top rooftop design. The signature dihedral doors of the convertible increase the cool factor up a notch, and the intense use of carbon-fiber tub and other carbon-fiber elements for the exterior keeps the weight in check.

2022 McLaren 720s Spider Side View

Since there are no major changes for the 2022 model year from 2021, although we aren’t complaining, the front still holds some blacked-out elements in the bumper along with the automatic LED headlights and LED DRLs setup. The design of this McLaren might not be as flashy as some of the rivals in the segment, but that doesn’t take away from it the characteristics of being a true mesmerizer. When McLaren itself says that every cue on the exterior is for a purpose, we agree as the design is a masterpiece when it comes to keeping aerodynamics principles in control.

Curb Weight (lbs)

Length (inches)

Width (inches)

Height (inches)

Ground Clearance (inches)

Wheelbase (inches)

*- Expected

All the cars in the competition flaunt their low-slung silhouette design and maintain a height close to 50 inches. The 2022 McLaren stands on the compact in the already compact designs of these supercars which makes it easy to handle while cornering. With an overall curb weight of 3,732 lbs, the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera is the heaviest option, whereas the McLaren shows its construction prowess by being the lightest option at 3,128 lbs. Major exterior highlights of the 2022 720s include:

  • Active rear spoiler with air brake and automatic Drag Reduction System (DRS)
  • Electrically folding heated door mirrors (with a dip in reverse functionality)
  • Electronic external door release buttons (both sides)
  • Dark Palladium front splitter
  • Front air intakes

2022 Mclaren 720s Spider Safety

We are not a part of Beckett’s absurd world, thus it won’t be true that NHTSA or IIHS crash-test a McLaren for safety. Similar to McLaren, the rivals are also devoid of any kind of safety tests from federal and private organizations. The 2022 McLaren 720s is built around a carbon fiber Monocage II-S structure, which provides it the required strength and rigidity. Safety becomes important when the vehicle is created to reach the 60 mph mark in 2.6 seconds, and McLaren has offered some standard safety features such as ABS with driveline traction control system, dual-stage airbags, side-impact beams, tire pressure monitoring system, and more. Few salient safety features include:

  • Brake assist technology
  • Dual-stage driver and passenger airbags
  • Door and knee airbags for both occupants
  • Variable Drift Control
  • Proactive chassis control II
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Rearview camera
  • Auto-leveling headlights
  • Hill-start assist

2022 Mclaren 720s Spider Competition

2022 McLaren 720s Spider vs 2021 Ferrari 812 GTS

While both the cars are exemplary in the segment, the 2022 McLaren 720s Spider manages to gain a slight advantage over Ferrari in the form of real-world performance and price range. The 2021 Ferrari 812 GTS is around $60,000 more expensive than the already expensive McLaren. While McLaren is more inclined towards carving corners on a race track, the above-mentioned Ferrari will be a more ideal choice if you need a supercar that can also perfectly play a role of a daily cruiser, all thanks to the supple suspension setup.

2022 McLaren 720s Spider vs 2021 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Convertible

While both the cars are magnificent to look at, the 2022 McLaren 720s enjoys an upper hand by asking for a lower price. The twin-turbo V12 of the Aston Martin offers better power and torque figure but fails to cash on it as McLaren provides much better 0-60 mph and quarter-mile timings. A slight edge Aston Martin has over McLaren is its capacity to seat 4 passengers, but that has never been the factor of choosing a vehicle in the segment. Between these two, the decision depends on what you want from your $300,000+ machine.

2021 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Driving view

2022 McLaren 720s Spider vs 2021 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster

The 2021 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster is the most expensive option in the competition, around $250,000 more than what McLaren asks for, but it proves its worth by offering a flashy and head-turning design which is also supported by a thrilling experience behind the wheel. The 0-60 mph timing and the top speed of the Italian Bull are the best-in-class in the segment. However, all this beastly nature keeps it at the very back in the fuel economy section which McLaren tops with a combined mileage of 18 mpg. Another major issue with Lamborgini would be its not so ideal nature in daily driving conditions. If we have to choose, the 2022 McLaren will be our choice due to its better value for money proposition.

2022 Mclaren 720s Spider Final Verdict

There is nothing that is missing from this exceptional offering from McLaren except the lack of driver assistance features and adequate cabin space. And while the 2022 model is a carryforward model from 2021, it offers thrilling performance from its Twin-Turbo V8 while also showing its prowess in the riding and handling department. The best-in-class combined mpg of 18 further solidifies its place as an attractive offering in the competition. All in all, for the price and what it offers in return, the 2022 McLaren 720s Spider comes out to be a solid pick in the segment.
