What Trim should you buy?

The A-Class is only available in a single trim option. The A220 trim comes with almost all the features expected at this price point and makes the A-Class a value for money product when compared to its rivals. The build quality and the fit and finish levels remain to be impressive and the price of this variant is kept aggressive. In addition to this, features like a sunroof, powered front seats, and gesture controls.

2021 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Engine and Performance

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan gets a 2.0-L turbocharged petrol engine. This engine comes mated to a seven-speed automatic gearbox and can be had with FWD as well as AWD drivetrain options. The peak power output from this turbocharged motor stands at 188 hp while the maximum torque output is claimed to be 221 lb-ft. The engine is not only refined and smooth but is extremely driveable.

2021 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan engine bay

The low-end power delivery is impressive and the car picks up pace in a brisk manner. The gearbox too is smooth with the shifts if not very fast. The NVH levels are impressive but the engine does get a little vocal when being pushed extremely hard. The throttle response is impressive and the car starts pulling strongly from the initial revs. But it definitely doesn’t match up to the performance of some of the more powerful machines in the segment.

The most expensive Volvo is the most powerful and fastest one here and smokes the prominent rivals by a significant margin. The A-Class is not the most powerful car in the segment and hence struggles when 0-60 mph timings as compared with the rivals. However, the car does boast supreme refinement levels. The BMW is the best balance between price and performance as it delivers impressive performance at a great price.

How well does the 2021 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan handle?

The A-Class is a car that aims to deliver maximum comfort and a premium in-cabin experience. Hence, the suspension is tuned to be on the softer side, helping absorb all the bad patches of the road and bumps. While the ride quality offered by the vehicle is great, hardcore driving enthusiasts may not appreciate the suspension setup tuned for comfort as well as the handling and driving dynamics.

2021 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan ride and handling

There is a significant body roll while the car does tend to understeer a little on the hard corners. Having said this, an average driver will not complain as the car offers impressive high-speed stability and extremely light steering, thus making it a perfect car for urban usage. Push it hard and you will feel that the soft suspension is not the best to take on the corners and the grip levels offered from the tires too are not very impressive.

2021 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Braking Performance

As expected from a car of this segment, the A-Class comes with a four-wheel disc brake setup. The front wheels are equipped with 11-inch rotors while the rear wheels are offered with 10.3-inch brake rotors. Having said this, the performance offered by the braking setup is impressive and the car comes to a complete stop sans any drama under heavy braking. Features like ABS, brake assist, traction control, and electronic stability control are a valuable addition and help in improving the braking performance by a fair margin.

The braking performance offered by the A-Class is one of the best in the segment and the car stays under control of the driver in emergency braking situations. The Volvo is the heaviest and takes the longest distance to come to a halt from 60 MPH. The BMW and the Audi are on the middle grounds in terms of braking. Overall the Mercedes provides the best braking performance here.

A quick comparison of the A-Class with the rivals reveals that it's one of the most fuel-efficient sedans in the segment. In addition to this, the car also boasts an impressive range on a single tank full of fuel. But the least powerful Audi A3 is the highest efficient machine here while obviously, the most powerful Volvo delivers the least fuel economy figures. The Volvo however, comes with the largest fuel capacity and hence provides the most range.
