The Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 has long been the flag bearer of raw and unadulterated tire-shredding madness, all thanks to some ridiculously high-powered motors under the hood and an extremely agile chassis. As we move towards a more climate-conscious society, Mercedes itself believes that it is time to bid adieu to all big-block engines in favor of smaller and more efficient ones. However, AMG is not willing to compromise on power figures for this trade-off.

For 2022, Mercedes-Benz has stated that the entire C class line-up would be capped at a 2.0-liter four-banger under the hood including the AMG C 63 Convertible. This might come as a shock to most purists and enthusiasts, but as we move to an electrified future, this is pretty much the compromise we expected Mercedes to make. The 2022 Mercedes-AMG C 63 Cabriolet rivals the likes of BMW M4 Competition Convertible, Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible, and Jaguar F-Type R-Dynamic Convertible.

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 Convertible Features

Since the 2022 Mercedes AMG C 63 Convertible is yet to be publicly announced by the Daimler group, we are yet to receive concrete pricing of the same. But if the past is any indication, we do expect a sizable increase. We also expect the C 63 Convertible to feature only a singular variant as has been the case in the past since these are the pinnacle representation of the C-Class line-up in themselves.

Which Trim should you buy?

Since the C 63 line-up is destined to lose out on its iconic AMG flair due to the downsizing decision, we certainly believe that dropping the extra cash for the Cabriolet variant of the C 63 might just be the smarter choice. It will also be equipped with many class-leading comfort and convenient features. Also, a cabriolet would never handle as well as its coupe counterpart, but a little wind in your hair on your everyday commute or the weekend trip to the hills never hurt anybody!

2022 Mercedes-AMG C 63 Cabriolet Release Date

Currently, the 2022 Merc-AMG C63 Cabriolet has been spotted testing with heavy camouflage and is expected to arrive in the first half of 2022.

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 Convertible Engine and Performance

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG C 63 Cabriolet is finally pulling the plug on big displacement engines in favor of a more efficient setup albeit at the cost of the “AMG Drama”. We are just bracing ourselves for the colossal hue and cry that is going to arise the moment Mercedes makes the news of the downsizing in an official press release. If some birdies are to be believed, the 2022 AMG C 63 Convertible is going to feature the M-139 four-cylinder under the hood. M-139 has been dubbed as the highest output four-pot on the globe and has been equipped in the AMG A45 S for quite a while.

This engine is supposedly going to be mated to an electric turbocharger and a 201 hp producing electric motor that should produce a combined output of over 550 hp, maybe even closer to 600hp if certain reports are to be believed. It is slated to be a significant step up in power from the current 4.0L Twin Turbo V8 setup that pushes out 469 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. The electric motor would also help bump up the torque output astronomically while also offering an AMG first in the form of Pure EV driving thanks to the E-Performance initiative. This should theoretically allow you to waft to work in silence on your workdays while also allowing you to rip open the track on the weekends.

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 Convertible 4.0L Engine

With the entire line-up moving towards a 4 pot future, we expect AMG to dial in its handling to an unprecedented level. The lack of weight in the front thanks to the lighter engine would help them achieve perfect weight distribution while the inclusion of a floor-mounted battery pack would lower the center of gravity even further. The outgoing model in itself is a specimen worthy of showcasing what exquisite handling feels like. And we certainly believe that with the newer generation on the horizon, the 2022 AMG C63 Cabriolet would pretty much knock it out of the park.

No matter the vehicle you pick out of the bunch, performance is going to be blistering regardless. If we take into consideration all of the improvements that the 2022 C 63 Cabriolet would be bringing along, maybe waiting out a new purchase isn’t too bad of a decision. The 2021 C63 Cabriolet sports a 4L Bi-turbo V8 that pushes the vehicle from 0-60MPH in just about 4 seconds. Rivals like BMW and Corvette offer more power which helps it cover the 0-60MPH in under 4 seconds. The F-Type will also come with a large engine but can’t beat any car in comparison in terms of acceleration and power output.

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 Convertible Fuel Economy

9.0/10

The 2022 AMG C 63 line-up was never conceptualized to be an economical runabout grocery-getter, and its efficiency has always reflected the same. Although the outgoing model features significantly better EPA estimates at 17MPG in the city and 25 MPG in the highway when compared to the good ol’ 6.3 L naturally aspirated V8.

With the arrival of the 2022 C 63 Cabriolet though, we expect this notion to go for a toss as the PHEV setup alongside a supremely efficient 4 cylinder should bump up the EPA estimates a couple of notches. It is also being speculated that the 2022 C 63 would also be the first-ever C-Class to offer pure electric driving which would further enhance the practical quotient.

The BMW M4 Competition is a fuel guzzler if you ask us, but for the consumers shopping in this segment, efficiency isn’t really a priority. The Corvette offers decent fuel economy considering it sports a huge V8 under its hood. Regardless, we expect the 2022 C 63 to blow its competition out of the water when it comes to efficiency thanks to the downsized motor and the electric motor assistance.

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 Convertible Interior

7.0/10

The very fact that the 2022 C 63 Cabriolet is the most expensive and highest performing iteration of the C-Class line-up, means that Mercedes has never shied away from offering some of the most exquisite materials and advanced technology on the inside. Even in its outgoing form, the C 63 Cabriolet features a fantastic set of seats that cocoon you in like no other. The dashboard is laid out in a very ergonomic fashion and all the controls are within reach. When you are going ham on the throttle, the luxurious feeling Alcantara steering wheel is a joy to operate in itself.

The outgoing model offers 14-way power front sport seats with memory, heated front seats

Airscarf neck-level heating system, dual-zone automatic climate control, 64-color LED ambient lighting, and MB-Tex/DINAMICA upholstery which can be upgraded to Nappa leather upholstery. If certain spy shots of the camouflaged 2022 C 63 are to be referred to, it is evident that the newer interior would be heavily inspired by the tech that is available on the outgoing S and E Class.

The lack of rear seats in the Corvette does free up a tiny bit more room in the trunk, but if you ask us, the Mercedes and BMW are still the most practical options of the bunch. BMW M4 Convertible offers a more balanced cabin and cargo space. The F-Type offers the least cargo capacity despite offering seating only for two passengers. Some of the standout interior features are:

  • 14-way power front sport seats with memory
  • Airscarf neck-level heating system
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • 64-color LED ambient lighting
  • Nappa Leather upholstery
  • Heated front seats
  • 50/50 split-folding rear seats

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2022 C 63 Cabriolet is rumored to feature the second generation of the MBUX infotainment system. As standard, you should get a 12.8-inch portrait OLED touch screen which would be identical to the one on the latest generation of the S-Class. This pretty much means that the 2022 C 63 Convertible would get the most bleeding-edge pieces of tech on the inside.

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 Convertible Infotainment System

The 2022 model is expected to be coupled to some very eccentric hardware as well. Some features like a steering wheel with touch controls, touchpad controller, Bluetooth connectivity, HD radio, SiriusXM satellite radio, USB ports, and many more will be available as standard. For smartphone connectivity, you’ll have access to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well.

Although for some the 12.8-inch slab of glass could be a little too much in a performance-oriented vehicle, it is a decision that Mercedes seems to have finalized upon. The Burmester audio system that is currently available on the outgoing C 63 is an ethereal experience in itself, and we certainly expect Mercedes to carry it forward to 2022 MY as well. Some of the standout infotainment features are:

  • 10.25-inch infotainment display
  • 12.3-inch customizable instrument cluster
  • 13-speaker Burmeister premium audio system
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • HD radio receiver

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 Convertible Exterior

7.0/10

The Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 line-up has always been eye candy for us even when it featured softer shoulder lines and rounded edges on the current generation. The Cabriolet variant has also been a favorite as we are a little soft-hearted towards the idea of open-top motoring especially with a dash of AMG under the hood. The spy shots suggest that it will come with a sleeker set of LED headlights and a soft-top roof.

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 Convertible Side view

The 2022 AMG C 63 Cabriolet is speculated to feature design touches right out of the S Class and E Class’s playbooks since the family faces are destined to carry on. We do expect the C 63 Cabriolets’ proportions to grow by a respectable amount, but the overall proportions will stand pleasing to the eye. The widebody and muscular nature might seem a little toned down in its new avatar, but we would still reserve our judgments until we see it in its flesh.

Although the C63 Cabriolet is currently the heaviest of the lot, we expect the overall weight not to decrease significantly. Even though the V8 would be replaced by a much lighter 4 cylinder unit, the added weight of the batteries for the PHEV system would more than makeup for the deficit.

The M4 Competition Convertible is the longest in the lot and also sports a slightly larger wheelbase which explains why it offers better interior and cargo space. The Corvette offers a better ground clearance than all while the F-type sits on the shortest wheelbase which makes it more maneuverable. Some of the standout exterior features are:

  • LED headlights, taillights & DRLs
  • Puddle lamps
  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Quad exhaust chrome tips
  • Black grille with chrome accents
  • All-weather soft rooftop
  • Optional AMG Night Package

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 Convertible Safety

7.0/10

Being an AMG product that is a rather low sales volume product, the outgoing model of the C 63 Convertible has not been crash-tested by the NHTSA or the IIHS. We certainly don’t expect the 2022 model to be any different. The outgoing C 63 Cabriolet features some of the most advanced as well as sophisticated active safety features out in the market and for the year 2022, we do believe that it would cherry-pick even more safety features from the newest generation of the S-Class. Some of the standout safety features are:

  • Active distance assist DISTRONIC
  • Active blind spot assist
  • Active & evasive steering assist
  • Active lane-keeping assist
  • Active emergency stop assist
  • Active brake assist with cross-traffic function
  • Active speed limit assist
  • Active lane change assist
  • Parktronic with active parking assist
  • Surround-view camera

2022 Mercedes-AMG C 63 Convertible vs 2022 BMW M4 Convertible

The rivalry between both of them continues long after we have entered the new decade, and with the arrival of the 2022 C 63 Convertible, things are about to heat up even more. Even in their 2021 avatars, the C 63 Cabriolet and the BMW M4 Convertible offer amazing performance for your hard-earned money. The M4 is vastly superior on a track but that comes at the cost of feeling cynical whereas the C 63 has a distinct soul and thrill which takes away from a cleaner lap time. The 2022 model of the C 63 Cabriolet will be more fuel-efficient and might offer better performance as well.

2022 BMW M4 Convertible Three Quarter View

2022 Mercedes-AMG C 63 Convertible vs 2022 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible

Let’s just say, if it wasn’t for the pricing and performance, these two wouldn’t even be in a head-to-head. As it seems Chevrolet is starting to give the big dogs a run for their money. The Corvette is definitely superior at breaking track records, it is also superior at breaking your back, neck, gas allowance, and comfort aspirations. However, it offers better ground clearance and good fuel economy for its size. The AMG C 63 Cabriolet on the other hand is vastly superior at being both a luxury vehicle as well as a daily driver and the 2022 model will be highly efficient as well.

2022 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible Three Quarter View

2022 Mercedes-AMG C 63 Convertible vs 2022 Jaguar F-Type R-Dynamic Convertible

The Jaguar F-Type is arguably one of our all-time favorite vehicles, but one has to realize that the Mercedes can fit two more adults while also being more fuel-efficient. Even with a bigger engine, the F-Type can’t offer better performance. The C 63 Cabriolet offers better cargo capacity as well. With the arrival of the 2022 C 63 Cabriolet, the Mercedes is destined to become an even more practical offering which does mean that the argument to get the Jag over the Mercedes is definitely going to water down.

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 Convertible Final Verdict

The new Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 Cabriolet is going to bring about changes that could never have been foreseen in an AMG product. But to be honest, we do understand the predicament Mercedes is in. With the world moving towards a more sustainable and carbon-neutral future, the life expectancy of ICE-powered performance vehicles is rather short and manufacturers are trying their level best to keep them alive.

The 2022 AMG C 63 Cabriolet might not be the all-natural brawn behemoth that it has always been in the past, but if numbers are to be believed, it is still going to be the fastest and the most technologically advanced AMG C 63 to ever be produced!
