2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 Coupe Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

CARHP Editorial Updated on: November 14, 2019

The AMG coupe just moved to the top of the hit list with the tiny new upgrades it gets for 2019. With the AMG Traction Control and the AMG Dynamics software in its arsenal, the C63 is ready to take on the beasts like Hellcat, Shelby and the Corvette. The spruced up C63 S, with added performance enhancements takes the coupe to the next level.

Performance doesn't come cheap, costing you $68,750 for the base model without any optional extras, while the C63 S takes the price up to $76,450. However, for that level of power for the roaring V8, the coupe is worth every cent. Rumour has it, there's a beefier and more track focussed C63 R in the works.

Overall Rating

From America, the muscle coupes like the SRT Hellcat, the Shelby GT350, Camaro ZL1 and the Corvette Z06 offer massive horsepower and torque figures, while the German coupes are excellent contenders in driving dynamics with an M4 and the RS5 Quattro competing. Let's see if the C63 is the best coupe for your garage.

We Recommend

If youre considering the already bonkers C63 coupe, why not go all out and get the C63 S AMG - perched atop the food chain. Afterall you wouldn't want to regret the lack of power once you get accustomed to the brutal C63.

2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 Coupe Engine and Performance

9.0/10

Mercedes promises sharper, quicker gear changes in all driving modes, up to six of which are available for C63 S models (Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Race, and Individual.) - Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

The C-class coupe with the handcrafted 4.0L biturbo V8 engine and AMG treatment is a hard-hitter like Floyd Mayweather; step on the gas and the pistons slam like sledgehammers propelling the coupe with 469 hp and 479 lb-ft sent to the rear wheels. The byproduct of this tremendous power is the tumultuous uproar from the exhaust manifold, not mellowed by the turbos at play.

Further along the lineup comes the C63 S coupe, which has been through tighter training sessions, and now punches 503 hp and 516 lb-ft torque. Along with performance enhancements, the C63 S also sheds a few pounds, ripped and ready to take on its rivals.

Both the models come with an AMG Speedshift 9-speed automatic transmission as a replacement to the previous gens 7-speed gearbox. The new gearbox shift smoother and quicker, while the higher gears make an impact on economy while cruising.

Against the American muscle cars, keeping up with the power figures in next to impossible, however, the Merc and other Deutschlanders still manage to keep up superior engineering and better handling coupes. The Merc's arch-nemesis - the BMW M4 - comes with a smaller V6 and makes lesser power, but still gives it a run for its money.

Acceleration

With enough tarmac to stretch its wings, the C63 takes flight all the way to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds. Merc uses a multi-plate clutch instead of a torque converter for intense acceleration that feels like a right hook to your chest as you are pushed into your seat. The C63 S, as you would've guessed, is a tad faster in 3.8 seconds.

The rivals facing off against the C63 on the drag strip are quite formidable. The Corvette Z06 is the fastest one to hit 60 in 2.9 seconds, with the Camaro ZL1 hard at its tail making it in 3.5 seconds. The Audi RS 5 finishes with the C63 S in 3.8 seconds, while the BMW M4 takes a bit longer, the lack of power really shows here.

Ride and Handling

With the AMG Traction Control it inherits from the AMG GT-R, is the state-of the-art stability control system which is the main highlight of the C63's drivetrain. For optimum grip through the corners and dial down intrusiveness of the traction control you get nine levels of control. However, turning the dial to the max is not for the faint of heart and to be tested with extreme care.

AMG Dynamics is another groundbreaker software that utilizes steering, speed, and yaw sensors to foresee what the vehicle is probably going to do and assists the driver by working the stability control through brake-based torque vectoring. The ride even in comfort mode is harsh, bumps and undulation feel like punches to the liver as the sport bucket seats keep in place with the lumbar support and bolstering.

Braking

Jab at the brakes and they chip away speed with amazing effectiveness with the help of the 14.2-inch discs at the front and the back. The brake modulation is precise and is customized to suit your need based on your driving mode through the AMG Dynamics software.

In comparison to the competition, most of the American muscle cars have massive 15+ inch brakes to stop the coupes. The BMW M4 has equally massive 15 and 14.6 inch discs, while the Audi has quite small 13.8 inch discs.

2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 Coupe Fuel Economy

5.0/10

Well, well, all that boast about high power figures comes crashing for the Murican muscle cars when it comes to economy. The 4.0L V8 in the Merc is quite a frugal engine, with 27 miles to the gallon on highways and 19 in the cities.

The Deutschlanders are the ones with the upper hand in this rivalry. The BMW and the Audi both have more than 20 miles to the gallon of combined fuel economy. The Cadillac ATS V also has decent fuel economy compared to other muscle maniacs, like the Challenger and the Corvette.

9.2/10

Standard furnishings are black leatherette/microfiber upholstery combined with piano-black and aluminum trim. Optional are nappa leather hides in all black, black/gray, black/red, or black/white combinations; a black/gray treatment with yellow stitching is new for 2019. - Car Connection

Seating and Comfort

The Coupe has black and red trimmed suede seats provide great support to your torso through the corners, as well as keep you comfortable in the longer rides. The sport seats with power adjustment for their thigh bolsters and headrests, let the driver dial in a perfect spot behind the AMG three-spoke, flat-bottom steering wheel. The rear seats aren't as roomy as the ones in the C-class sedan, but theyre certainly better than the unusable rear in the coupes, like Camaro and Mustang.

Infotainment System

The minimal and clean look to the infotainment keeps the centre console clutter free and distraction free for the driver. The interface is high-res and intuitive to use, unlike most infotainments which leave you confused which menu to open. The wider 10.2-inch screen seamlessly integrated on the dash, with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay available as standard. The Burmester surround sound system is an audiophile's dream, which fills the cabin with crisp clear sound.

Cargo Capacity

At the back of the coupe, the cargo volume is not that great, primarily because of the sloping roofline. However, on the inside youd find plenty of cubby holes to put your starbucks cappuccinos in.

The coupe is instantly recognizable as an AMG with the Panamericana grille up front, the rest of the fluidic curves and shapely body panels make the Merc look like a pebble washed ashore. The classy and elegant styling gets a muscular undertone with the wide rear haunches and aggressive elements like the splitter, diffuser, side skirts and huge air intakes.

2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 Coupe Competition

Mercedes-AMG C63 vs BMW M4

The rivalry between the M4 and the C63 is truly fierce. Both of these coupes have high powered engine, a seamless transmission and a power to throw you back into your seat. On the inside, however, the Mercedes has a much more premium and technologically superior cabin compared to the BMW, which on the flipside gets donnes a sportier cloak. From the outside, the design is completely upon your preference, as both of these coupes look stunning.

Mercedes-AMG C63 vs Audi RS 5

Coming with a V8 and plenty of power, the C63 claims the throne of coupes as the the RS5 awaits ambush. To counter Audi's trump card, the Quattro, AMG has given C63 a nuclear deterrent. The AMG Traction Control from the GT-R and AMG Dynamics - best thing to happen to an AMG since the Black Series. Interiors are equally plush, with the infotainment best you can find on both. On the outside, the Merc challenges the hude diamond grille with its Panamericana. Only way the RS5 still keeps relevance is its versatility with 4 doors and a bigger trunk.

2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 Coupe Final Verdict

The AMG C63 just might be the perfect performance coupe for you, the perfectly blended smoothie of performance, comfort and luxury. The icing - AMG Dynamics - makes the driving experience richer and creamier. The cherry on the top is the AMG Traction Control, which elevates it to the level of elites like the AMG GT-R.

The easy to use infotainment and plenty of room in the interior make it an enjoyable place to be in, even on long journeys. Another detail it inherits from the GT-R is tha wide gaping Panamericana grille, which sets it apart from any plebeian non-AMG model. All those features, with a mouth-watering V8 powertrain, makes the C63 AMG the best candidate on the menu.
