Engine

“The 2018 Mercedes-Benz CLS features powerful engines and engaging handling, making it a fun car to drive. It also delivers the smooth ride you want from a high-end luxury sedan. Fuel economy numbers could be a little better, but they’re not bad for the class.”- cars.usnews

Engine and Transmission

The Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS 63 S gets a 5.5 L Twin Turbocharged Premium Unleaded V-8 Engine which delivers a power of 577hp @ 5500rpm and a staggering torque of 590 lb-ft @ 1750-5000rpm. Much like its competitors, the engine has slightly greater fuel intake capacity. In terms of engine performance, the Porsche Panamera Turbo does better but with an additional price of nearly 40,000$ which makes the Porsche lose out against the Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS 63 S.

The transmission is another AMG specific creation of Mercedes-Benz called the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-Speed Automatic Transmission with a drive configuration of AWG Performance 4MATIC All-Wheel Drive (AWD) so the immense power gets driven to all its wheels to provide an optimum driving experience.

Acceleration

The Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS 63 S provides a mind-blowing acceleration of 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds owing to its torque. Its acceleration is the best in its class and gives a sporting feel to the driver. With a quarter mile in just 11.6 seconds, the Mercedes beats its competitors even with a neck to neck competition with the Porsche Panamera Turbo.

Ride and Handling

Just like a human mind has different moods it operates on, the Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS 63 S provides switching between multiple modes for your different moods. It has 4 modes: Comfort, Manual, Sport, and Sport+

All the modes differ in terms of the power generated by the engine depending on the driving circumstances. A city ride with frequent starts and stops calls for the comfort mode which keeps the monstrous engine in a calm state. On free roads, however, engaging the manual mode to ensure your choice and demand of power. On highways and your favorite roads, the sport and sport+ mode comes in handy which unleash the true potential of the Turbocharged Engine.

All this with an integrated safety and stability systems ensure a controlled ride. Adjustable AMG Adaptive sport suspension settings available at a click of a button give you a total control of the car on varying road conditions. On top of that, the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and the 4-Wheel Electronic Traction System (ETS) gives a safe ride even at high speeds without any bothering turbulence. The gear shifting also takes place at the immediate shift paddles on the steering wheels for faster response.

Braking

With immense torque comes an immense responsibility to stop the car and avoid collisions which call for a futuristic braking technology. Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) as we all know has been there for ages, but the Mercedes provides something called as the Adaptive Braking Technology and Braking Assist (BASS) which basically eliminates the human error of not braking with the proper force and on the proper time. This significantly reduces the braking distance and any future collision possibilities giving the passengers a carefree ride at top performances.

Curb weight(lbs) 4420 4497 4398 4430
60-0 MPH (ft.) 113 101 111 108

The braking distance for a deceleration from 60-0 mph happens to be 113 ft which are considerably greater than the competitors. Though the braking technology assists the driver, a little care is of utmost importance.

Fuel Economy

The fuel efficiency of 19 miles per gallon (mpg) of the Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS 63 S takes a hit against the Porsche Panamera Turbo’s 21 mpg considering both city and highway rides combined. Audi RS7 has an equal combined fuel economy but better highway fuel efficiency and lesser city fuel efficiency, so a riding choice can be made in that case depending on whether you would be frequent on a highway or city like conditions.

With every mode, there’s an option to switch on/off the ECO mode which helps improve the fuel efficiency. On an average, the fuel efficiency of the Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS 63 S isn’t that bad and can be an acceptable parameter.

Interior

“The 2018 Mercedes-Benz CLS delivers the swanky interior you want from a luxury car, but the design looks a little dated. Still, the cabin is stylish, well-built, and comfortable. The front seats are supportive, though the rear seats are cramped. The trunk is small for the class.”-cars.usnews

Seating and Comfort

A passenger capacity of 4 adults would’ve been a concern but every competitor has opted for the same model and hence it does not pose an issue. The car feels spacious and beats its match hands down with a large passenger volume of 104 ft-cube which gives more room for movement.

Mercedes Benz AMG CLS 63 S vs Porsche Panamera Turbo

Porsche Panamera Turbo was the only model with at par ratings and numbers as the Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS 63 S. Even though it performs better in many aspects, the exorbitantly high price of $150,000 leaves it in dust in front of the Mercedes Benz AMG CLS 63 S. Rather than investing an extra $40,000 into buying the Porsche Panamera Turbo, it’ll be wise to invest in the additional optional features that are offered by the Mercedes in its model, which only brings it closer to perfection.

Mercedes Benz AMG CLS 63 S vs Audi RS7

The new Audi RS7 Sportback comes powers by a V8 bi-turbo powertrain delivering 560 hp and a peak torque of 553 lb.ft. The same powertrain is shared by the Audi RS6.  On the other hand, the Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG  produces 557 horsepower and 592 pound-feet of torque through its 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine. The fuel economy of both the cars is quite similar. So, it’s hard to decide unless the price is much of a concern.

Mercedes Benz AMG CLS 63 S vs BMW M6 Gran Coupe

BMW’s M6 Gran Coupe faces the battle with both the RS7 and Merc CLS 63 S. It is powered by the same 4.4 liter V-8 and uses the same chassis components offered in the 5-series. It offers similar 560 hp like the Audi RS7.

Final Verdict

The only chance for someone to opt for a different car maker would be in case of the cargo capacity, which might be a decision maker for a family or someone with travel plans on a frequent basis. But instead the Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS 63 S is a first-class executive car loaded with performance and in our final verdict, it wins the top spot to be the best car in our comparison.

Overall, the Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS 63 S is a blast. It’s a perfect choice among all cars in its price segment. It’s a choice for those expecting the finest quality car. With every feature you can get in the model it provides you a sensational feeling of riding the car of everyone else’s dreams.
