For those who find the standard E class a bit soft and the E63 a bit too loud, the 2018 Mercedes AMG E43 with a 3.0L Bi-turbo AMG V6 will strike a balance. It is not the fastest, the most efficient the cheapest or the most opulent but it is one the newest offerings that carves a place for itself in the long Mercedes line-up.

Priced at $71,600, it is equipped with same 3.0 Liter twin-turbo V6 as the E400, but it has been modified by the performance wing of Mercedes-Benz, AMG, to produce higher peak outputs of 295kW and 520 Nm.

Features

Mercedes AMG E43 is only available in one trim that is priced at $71,600. It is powered by AMG-enhanced 3.0L V6 Biturbo engine that delivers 396 horsepower and with increased turbo boost, 384 pound-feet of torque on tap at just 2,500rpm.

The engine is mated to a 9G-TRONIC transmission that delivers quick gear changes in virtually every driving situation, from relaxed cruising to quick bursts.

Engine

9.6/10
While not as intense as the V8-powered AMG E63 that's still down the roadway, flooring the accelerator in the E43 Sedan will definitely get your attention.

Thrust rolls on quickly and smoothly, bringing up 60 mph in a mere 4.5 ticks. Top speed in European trim is electronically limited to 155 mph, although maximum velocity will be held to 130 mph here in the U.S. - Kelley Blue Book

2018 Mercedes AMG E43 is powered by 3.0L Biturbo V6 engine making 396 horses and 384-pound feet of torque at 2,500 RPM. It is mated to the class leading 9G-TRONIC transmission that gives it excellent performance and less fuel consumption.

Handling and Steering

E43 is a comfort cruiser, which is the DNA of any E class model, but when you tap the pedal and the instant blast of torque plunges you back in the seat, you almost feel that the car has switched into a more performance stance. The adaptive air suspension just gobbles up bumps and undulations with ease providing you not only with maximum comfort but also tightens the handling and ride dynamics of the vehicle.

The steering feels nimble and agile in the city environment which makes it a breeze in traffic and when turning. Move to the highway, the steering weighs in superbly to provide you the confidence at any speeds.

Mercedes AMG E43 is equipped with 14.2-inch ventilated front and rear discs. E43 weighs in at 4145 pounds, which stops this luxury saloon at 109 feet from 60 to 0 MPH.

Then again, how concerned with fuel economy can you be if you're buying a 396-hp car? Its large gas tank provides more range than any rival we tested.-  Car and Driver"

With 9G-TRONIC transmission and bi-turbo V6 engine, the E43 manages 19 MPG in the city, 25 MPG on the highway and 22 MPG combined with city and highway driving.

Interior

9.6/10
"Befitting a car at the E43's price point, the cabin is genuinely nice place to spend time for the most part. The leather is excellent and the strip of wood that runs across the dash. - Forbes"

Its cabin is lathered in genuine leather and on the whole, feels like the S-class as soon as you get inside the car. The front reminds of the S class layout of the 4 vents and giant 2 12.3-inch high-resolution screens and the definition is stunning.

The steering mounted controls with touchpad makes it super easy to control every feature. The quality inside the car feels a cut above everyone in the segment. However, the black shiny trim can get full of scratches if not paid attention.

Seating and Comfort

E43 is just as spacious inside as standard e class. It's more supportive sports seats come with the electrical adjustment to help you get comfortable. You even get 4-way electrically adjustable lumbar support as standard to help reduce backache on long journeys.

Both front seats come with height adjustment. The back seats are made easy by the wide rear door openings. There's more than enough leg and headroom for passengers over 6-foot tall to get comfortable and the seats recline slightly.

The standard satellite navigation system is upgraded for the E43 in which changes include higher resolution graphics and more detailed maps. The shortcut buttons to use the beautiful infotainment are placed in the natural hand-resting position when driving the car.

It also comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring as standard, so you can use your phone's satellite navigation and music streaming apps through the car's built-in displays if you prefer.

Visual upgrades are relatively subtle and include Biturbo 4Matic badges on the front fender, beefier bumpers, AMG logos on the grille and trunklid, and quad exhaust tips. Inside, the AMG seats provide plenty of lateral support with more AMG logos sprinkled throughout.- Motortrend

The E43 is very much identical to its younger sibling the C-class and the daddy S-class. There are some considerable differences though from standard E class, you get AMG badging at the back, quad exhaust with AMG logo on it and meatier and beefed up bumpers.

Competition

Jaguar XF S vs Mercedes Benz AMG E 43

Jaguar XF S looks gorgeous and handles like a panther. It does have the power to match with the AMG E43, but it doesn't have the quality that is expected at the price. It might be $8,000 cheaper than Mercedes, but it doesn't have the luxury and technology that the latter offers.

Also, Jag suffers from reliability issues which also makes it a difficult choice. XF S might have better fuel economy and excellent boot space but doesn't come close in the comfort and space with inspiring performance as AMG E43 provides.

Audi A6 vs Mercedes Benz AMG E 43

Audi A6 is almost $15,000 cheap than AMG E43. This only might make the buyers a little more cautious in their purchase. It's 3.0 L TFSI V6 never fails to impress but AMG tuned E43 has a massive advantage when it comes to performance at 396 horses.

It doesn't have the agility and doesn't provide much confidence at speeds. The interior feels old in comparison to E43 but the price is the only factor that can affect the buyer's mind while choosing between these two.

Genesis G80 vs Mercedes Benz AMG E 43

Compared to the AMG E43, the G80 isn't quite luxurious, feature rich nor it can match the performance and handling offered by the AMG however, it is spacious and offers a comfortable ride. The real benefit of Genesis though is its lower price. The Mercedes AMG E43 is absolutely awesome but if you're budget conscious, Genesis G80 is a good buy.

Final Verdict

E43 AMG might carry the baby engine of the performance wing of Mercedes, the AMG, but it generates the level of performance and excites you with every inch of its space.

It is a combination of both luxury and performance providing a testament that it's not always a situation where you have to sacrifice one thing to get the other, E43 AMG combines it all into one to give you a package that is pretty hard to beat. One thing that might affect its run is the price point otherwise, it's a winner in every aspect.
