Since its inception, the Mercedes-Benz AMG E63 S sedan has been one of the benchmarks among luxury performance sedans. With an all-new refreshed Mercedes-Benz E-Class for 2021, this means the machine gets even meaner. Although its silhouette remains the same, its refreshed skin brings in a fresh front and rear end with slimmer head and tail lamps and even stronger character lines.

Being an E-Class, there’s no questioning about the E63 S’ elegance and luxury, but along with that, it also has some racing DNA infused into it. With a bonkers 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 coupled with sport suspension, the E63 S offers you the best of both worlds. A set of traditional drive modes alongside four AMG Dynamic driving modes also help the E63 S to unleash its true character on the road. With its very recent upgrade, the new 2021 E63 S sedan will also walk into its 2022 model year with no change at all.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Overall Rating

At $107,500, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG E63 S sedan is a perfect companion for your executive trips as well as weekend track-day endurances. At this price point though, you can also take the Audi RS 7, BMW M5, and Maserati Ghibli Trofeo into consideration, but the Mercedes-AMG cocktail in the E63 S with just the fine blend of everything into it, remains strong and tall, even today.

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG E 63 S Release Date

There has been no official communication made by the brand regarding the launch of the new Mercedes-AMG E63 S.

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG E 63 S Engine and Performance

Under the hood of the 2022 Mercedes-AMG, E 63 S is an iconic 4.0-liter Twin-Turbo V8 engine. It is rated at a whopping 603 hp at 5,750 rpm and has tire burning torque of 627 lb-ft at 2,500 rpm. The engine is mated to a 9-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT automatic transmission which delivers power to all four wheels. This setup is the only available one on the E 63 S. The high-tech systems inside this beast allow you to swap through six different driving modes; Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual, and Race.

Depending on the drive mode the all-wheel-drive system responds differently in different situations. There’s also a “Drift mode” which uncouples the front axle completely and shuts down traction control and stability control. It doesn’t take much effort to make the car drift thanks to the 627 lb-ft of torque. The colossal power helps the Merc reach the 60 mph mark in just 3.3 seconds. It takes just over 11 seconds to complete a quarter-mile and eventually hitting a top speed of 158 MPH which is electronically limited.

In the heated contest here, the 2022 Maserati Ghibli Trofeo asks for more money for the most underpowered engine in the segment. It is also the slowest in terms of 0-60mph times taking 3.7 seconds. The 2022 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S possesses the most powerful engine churning out 603 horses and has the highest torque on offer. BMW M5 is the quickest of the lot even in its base avatar; equip it with a Competition package and it becomes even more powerful. All cars in the lot here offer a sub-4-second 0-60MPH run and there is not much difference in terms of performance unless you are in a drag race.

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG E 63 S Fuel Economy

With such power under the hood, one has to compromise on fuel economy. The 2022 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S manages to provide a decent fuel economy of 15 mpg in the cities and 23 mpg on the highways which gives it a combined fuel economy of 18 mpg. It’s an engine that can be fueled only by premium gasoline which might not be the most frugal in the segment but just satisfactory. Surprisingly none of its competitors beat it in terms of efficiency.

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S and the 2022 Maserati Ghibli Trofeo, share the podium for the largest fuel tank capacity among the rivals here. Both are fitted with a 21.1-gallon fuel tank. However, Ghibli’s low fuel economy affects its range. The E 63 S though leads the segment in terms of range which you can expect to be around 379 miles. The closest that comes to the E 63 S is the 2021 Audi RS7 Sportback and BMW M5 that manage combined efficiencies of 17 MPG.

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG E 63 S Interior

The interior of the 2022 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S is one of the best in the segment. It is highly luxurious, attractive-looking, and filled with the latest gizmos. The dashboard and center console design are futuristic and contemporary. A metal strip separates the two-tier interior featuring wood/metal/chrome touches. Front and rear seats both have ample space for passengers. The seats are heavily bolstered to make your seating position high and upright for high-speed situations. However, they might be too tight for some buyers.

The exterior of the current 2021 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S received a major refresh which also carries into its 2022 model with no further tweaks. The overall silhouette and proportions remain the same though and its stance is still easily recognizable. Thanks to the new 12-slot AMG Panamericana grille with a larger Mercedes-Benz logo in the middle. The headlights are sleeker which feature LED daytime running lights as standard. In terms of overall proportions and road presence, each of the rivals here, have an aura of their own. However, the 2021 Audi RS7 Sportback is by far the heaviest car in this segment. It weighs over 400 pounds more than the 2022 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S that weighs a little under the 4500 lbs mark. It also features the lowest ground clearance in the segment. It is just 4.3 inches above the ground. RS7 is also the widest car in the lot and sits low on the ground; this translates to better stability. However, it is the Maserati Ghibli that has the longest wheelbase of 118 inches and is almost two and a half inches longer than the Mercedes-AMG. Standout exterior features are:

  • Auto On/Off projector-beam LED daytime running lights
  • Panorama roof

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG E 63 S Safety

A car of such stature, luxury, and performance ought to have a big list of safety features. The E 63 S delivers on its end by providing numerous advanced safety and driver-assist features. However, its crashworthiness is yet to be tested by the NHTSA and the IIHS. It won't be tested as it is too expensive and the sales volume is low.

To give you a better idea, the standard 2021 E-class sedan has been crash-tested by both agencies. It earned a full 5-star rating from the NHTSA and also earned the prestigious “Top Safety Pick+” from the IIHS. Courtesy to a whole bunch of advanced and innovative safety features which Mercedes-Benz is known for over the years. Some of the highlighted safety features are listed below: Standout safety features are:

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG E 63 S Competition

2022 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S vs 2022 BMW M5

The 2022 BMW M5 is probably the AMG E 63 S’s closest rival. The fellow German giant is closely priced and has almost the same powertrain figures as the E 63 S. However, the M5 is the quickest in its class in terms of 0-60mph and quarter-mile times. The Merc has a tough time competing with the BMW in terms of performance but it takes the lead with its luxurious interior. Not just luxury, the space inside is also larger than the M5, which sets them apart in the simplest way. For us, the Merc has more appeal than the BMW but it’s up to the user to make a choice between the two.

2022 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S vs 2021 Audi RS7 Sportback

The 2021 Audi RS7 Sportback is more performance-focused than the E 63 S. However, it is slightly underpowered and is over $6,000 more expensive than the Merc. The unique exterior styling of the Audi helps it stand out from the crowd but inside, the Merc is more spacious and luxurious. The Merc has the ability to provide the best of both worlds i.e. performance and luxury making it the preferred car.

2022 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S vs 2022 Maserati Ghibli Trofeo

The Italian brand with its Ghibli Trofeo offers a good package but it simply can’t match the Merc. The Maserati Ghibli Trofeo is expensive and is also the most underpowered. This combination can’t possibly compete with the German giants in terms of sales and popularity. The E 63 S is a no-brainer here, as it excels in almost every aspect when compared to the Maserati. To be more specific, the Merc has a better and more luxurious interior, it is more powerful, more economical, and less expensive than the Maserati.

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG E 63 S Final Verdict

There are a lot of good reasons to buy the 2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG E 63 S. It features one of the most luxurious interiors with the latest gizmos. It also has the most powerful engine in the segment. The E 63 S has multiple personalities wherein you can choose it to be a loose animal but also a composed and tamed one depending on the driving mode. It performs well against its competitors and outperforms almost all of them. If you’re looking for a mid-size performance and luxury sedan, then the 2022 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S is a no-brainer.
