The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 53 is offered as a standalone trim and features pretty much all the comfort features and amenities one expects from a car of this segment. As standard, the GT 53 is the Mercedes-AMG GT 43, but with a bumped-up output with some performance-oriented features that aids a lot in the handling. Apart from the bumped-up power, the GT 53 has no other upgrade and if someone wants a better handler, the GT 53 is the best bet in the trim line.

Release date

The official release date for the 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 53 has not yet been announced, but the German manufacturer has unveiled the car and let the world know about what it is packing. We expect the sedan to follow a similar launch schedule as other vehicles from the brand and make its way to the dealerships by the Fall of 2021.

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 53 has a mild hybrid system to aid with its fuel-economy woes which do seem to be doing its job pretty well. The claims are backed up by an EPA rating of 20 MPG in the city and 25 MPG on the highway, for a combined total of 22 MPG from its 21.1-gallon fuel tank. The numbers are better than all the competitors except for the Bimmer that produces less power. 

The numbers for the GT 53 are respectable for the power and performance on offer. The city MPG is as good as the Bimmer, while the highway MPG does take a hit despite the hybrid system. That said, the range is impressive but the same on the Panamera is just one-up on the Merc due to the bigger fuel tank. The BMW 8-Series Gran Coupe is undoubtedly the most frugal option averaging 23 MPG, while the Audi S7 manages similar efficiency as the Mercedes-AMG, but falls short on range averaging 424 combined miles. 

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 53 is as luxurious as one expects it to be with wooden trim on the doors and the dashboard. The door panels have leather with contrast stitching and a dual-tone finish to make it visually appealing and more importantly, posh. The center console houses various controls and small cubby space for storing stuff. Along with this, there are two cup holders and the center armrest. 

The seats are extremely supportive and offer a lot of bolstering to hold the occupants in place. The seats are power-adjustable and heated, while the Mb-Tex upholstery might seem a bit disappointing in a car worth $100,000. The rear seats are as comfortable as the front seats and are extremely soft. They have similar bolstering as the front seats but the height is a bit high making the seating position rather uncomfortable for long distances. 

The car has a hatchback for more convenience. The opening is big and the amount of space inside justifies the GT tag. With the load cover, the space is enough to hold a weekend’s worth of luggage for a family of four. The cargo space houses a 12V socket and some grocery hooks as well to add to the practicality of the daily grind. 

The GT 53’s cabin is the most spacious in the segment and the legroom is also expected to be better than the others. The shoulder room is the most in the segment which easily translates to 4 happily-occupied people inside. The cargo capacity isn’t declared but the opening on the trunk and the shape make it easy to carry a lot of stuff for weekend getaways. All other competitors can seat five passengers easily. Additionally, the 2021 Audi S7 leads the segment with its sizable boot that has a total capacity of 24.6 cubic feet. The silhouette of the AMG GT 53 is of a typical coupe-sedan with a sloping roof and blacked-out elements. The big wheels complement the visual well and add to the appeal of the car. There is a lower sill that extends all the way to the back for aerodynamic purposes. The rear of the car is very similar to the coupe, which is a big addition to the sporty design language that the sedan carries. The Merc is a heavy car, with the weight tipping in just below the heaviest Audi S7 that weighs 4,597 lbs. It is also one of the longest and the tallest cars with a total length and height of 199.2 and 57.3 inches, while the width is just a bit lower than the Porsche. The Merc sits quite low to the ground which helps with the handling and also with how the car performs on the twisty roads. The looks are gorgeous with muscular lines all around, just like its BMW counterpart.

The Audi has more power than the AMG but the acceleration times are very similar. The AMG has a bigger footprint than the Audi and the handling dynamics are better due to the lower ground clearance and the performance-oriented parts that aid a lot in the highway driving as well but the Audi does the driving bit better in the city.

Given this, the GT 53 also has a better MPG in the city that also lends it a better range with the bigger fuel tank on offer. 

2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 53 Vs. 2022 BMW 8-Series Gran Coupe

The BMW clearly has a power deficit when compared to the AMG but that doesn’t make it any less of a luxurious performance-tourer. The engine characteristic is very smooth while the interior is better in terms of visual appeal and layout.

BMW’s iDrive also plays a very good part in ensuring an intuitive experience for the buyer. The Merc, on the other hand, has more power, a more engaging drive, better rear-seat comfort, and distinct styling. The Panamera 4S is the better car in terms of handling dynamics and performance but for everything else, the AMG does a better job.

The GT 53 has better EPA ratings than the Panamera but the latter has a bigger fuel tank that helps it gain more range.
