The 2022 GT 53 offers a very luxurious offer and goes up against the likes of the BMW 8-Series and the Audi S7, along with the Panamera’s V6-equipped trims. All the rivals have a very engaging drive and offer a posh cabin paired with all the latest tech.

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 53 Features

6.0/10

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 53 is offered as a standalone trim and features pretty much all the comfort features and amenities one expects from a car of this segment. As standard, the GT 53 is the Mercedes-AMG GT 43, but with a bumped-up output with some performance-oriented features that aids a lot in the handling. In terms of features, some of the highlighting ones are MB-Tex upholstery, 19-inch wheels, sunroof, and power-adjustable and heated front seats.

We recommend

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 53 is very similar to the GT 43 but has more power with identical equipment and hence, it boils down to the power-hungriness of the buyer. Apart from the bumped-up power, the GT 53 has no other upgrade and if someone wants a better handler, the GT 53 is the best bet in the trim line.

Release date

The official release date for the 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 53 has not yet been announced, but the German manufacturer has unveiled the car and let the world know about what it is packing. We expect the sedan to follow a similar launch schedule as other vehicles from the brand and make its way to the dealerships by the Fall of 2021.

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 53 Engine and Performance

8.0/10

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 53 gets an upgraded turbocharged 3.0L inline-6 under the hood that comes paired to a 48V electric motor, making the whole setup a mild hybrid. This combination gets an output of 429 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque and sends this to all four wheels via a 9-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The motor provides a very strong initial boost and aids in the seamless acceleration of the car, whereas the turbocharger takes care of the power in the higher RPMs.

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 53 Sedan In Acceleration Mode

The car feels like a true AMG when on the road because of how responsive the powertrain is - the downshifts are seamless and the engine’s response is instantaneous given the mild-hybrid system it is. The steering is perfectly weighted and gets the ideal weight irrespective of the driving mode it's switched in. The suspension is a bit firm and does a decent job of making the road noises go, given the low-profile tires the car comes equipped with. That said, the adaptive dampers do aid in giving a pretty comfortable drive in the city with certain sure-footedness on offer.

The Bimmer has the least power in the comparison despite having a similar powertrain to the AMG. This also affects the timings, which come in at the last. On the other end of the spectrum, the Panamera’s twin-turbocharged mill takes the lead for the timings clocking 3.6 seconds to the 60mph mark, almost half a second quicker than the Mercedes-AMG, despite being the second-most powerful engine out there. It also carries the best top-whack and the most expensive price tag as well. While the Audi S7 manages similar timings as the 2022 GT 53 taking 4.1 seconds, the BMW’s least powerful engine bears the grunt in this aspect.

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 53 Fuel Economy

4.5/10

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 53 has a mild hybrid system to aid with its fuel-economy woes which do seem to be doing its job pretty well. The claims are backed up by an EPA rating of 20 MPG in the city and 25 MPG on the highway, for a combined total of 22 MPG from its 21.1-gallon fuel tank. The numbers are better than all the competitors except for the Bimmer that produces less power.

The numbers for the GT 53 are respectable for the power and performance on offer. The city MPG is as good as the Bimmer, while the highway MPG does take a hit despite the hybrid system. That said, the range is impressive but the same on the Panamera is just one-up on the Merc due to the bigger fuel tank. The BMW 8-Series Gran Coupe is undoubtedly the most frugal option averaging 23 MPG, while the Audi S7 manages similar efficiency as the Mercedes-AMG, but falls short on range averaging 424 combined miles.

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 53 Interior

6.5/10

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 53 is as luxurious as one expects it to be with wooden trim on the doors and the dashboard. The door panels have leather with contrast stitching and a dual-tone finish to make it visually appealing and more importantly, posh. The center console houses various controls and small cubby space for storing stuff. Along with this, there are two cup holders and the center armrest.

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 53 Sedan Front Row Seats

The seats are extremely supportive and offer a lot of bolstering to hold the occupants in place. The seats are power-adjustable and heated, while the Mb-Tex upholstery might seem a bit disappointing in a car worth $100,000. The rear seats are as comfortable as the front seats and are extremely soft. They have similar bolstering as the front seats but the height is a bit high making the seating position rather uncomfortable for long distances.

The car has a hatchback for more convenience. The opening is big and the amount of space inside justifies the GT tag. With the load cover, the space is enough to hold a weekend’s worth of luggage for a family of four. The cargo space houses a 12V socket and some grocery hooks as well to add to the practicality of the daily grind.

The GT 53’s cabin is the most spacious in the segment and the legroom is also expected to be better than the others. The shoulder room is the most in the segment which easily translates to 4 happily-occupied people inside. The cargo capacity isn’t declared but the opening on the trunk and the shape make it easy to carry a lot of stuff for weekend getaways. All other competitors can seat five passengers easily. Additionally, the 2021 Audi S7 leads the segment with its sizable boot that has a total capacity of 24.6 cubic feet. That said, some of the highlights of the interior of the 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 53 are:

  • Power-adjustable and heated front seats
  • Wireless charging pad
  • MB-Tex upholstery
  • Customizable ambient interior lighting
  • Leather-wrapped heated steering wheel
  • Interior Air Filtration

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 53 comes equipped with a 12.3-inch touchscreen that is powered by Mercedes’ MBUX system. The MBUX enables seamless smartphone pairing via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wirelessly, while also enabling an intuitive UI for the occupants to use without issues. The graphics are smooth and the design elements are crisp, making it one of the best systems out there.

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 53 Sedan Infotainment System

As for the music, the standard speaker system is a 13-speaker Burmester system that can further be upgraded to a 16-speaker setup. That said, some highlighting features are:

  • 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration
  • MBUX infotainment interface
  • Satellite radio
  • AM/FM/SiriusXM
  • Augmented video for easier navigation prompts
  • Navigation

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 53 Exterior

7.0/10

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 53 carries a very aggressive body language which is very evident from the muscular hood and the busy front end. The Panamericana grille with the big Mercedes logo adds a lot of character to the car which is complemented well by the vents in the front bumper. The LED headlights on the GT 53 add to the aggressiveness and are adaptive, adding to the safety as well.

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 53 Sedan Front Angle View

The silhouette of the AMG GT 53 is of a typical coupe-sedan with a sloping roof and blacked-out elements. The big wheels complement the visual well and add to the appeal of the car. There is a lower sill that extends all the way to the back for aerodynamic purposes. The rear of the car is very similar to the coupe, which is a big addition to the sporty design language that the sedan carries. The rear also has an active rear wing, while the overall look is super clean.

The Merc is a heavy car, with the weight tipping in just below the heaviest Audi S7 that weighs 4,597 lbs. It is also one of the longest and the tallest cars with a total length and height of 199.2 and 57.3 inches, while the width is just a bit lower than the Porsche. The Merc sits quite low to the ground which helps with the handling and also with how the car performs on the twisty roads. The looks are gorgeous with muscular lines all around, just like its BMW counterpart.

Some highlighting exterior features are:

  • 19-inch wheels
  • LED headlights
  • Adaptive sport suspension
  • Sunroof
  • Active spoiler
  • Power-operated trunk

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 53 Safety

5.5/10

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 53 has all the safety features that the segment necessitates. The standard driver assistance features might not be a lot but if one wants more active safety, s/he can go with the Driver Assistance package that adds more assistance features like evasive steering assist and lane-keeping system. That said, the standard safety features include:

  • Automated parking system
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Forward collision mitigation
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Anti-theft alarm system

The GT 53 isn’t crash-tested by either the NHTSA or the IIHS due to the high value-low volume nature of the car. The article will be updated once the organizations publish their respective scores.

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 53 Competition

2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 53 Vs. 2022 Audi S7

The Audi has more power than the AMG but the acceleration times are very similar. The AMG has a bigger footprint than the Audi and the handling dynamics are better due to the lower ground clearance and the performance-oriented parts that aid a lot in the highway driving as well but the Audi does the driving bit better in the city.

2022 Audi S7

Given this, the GT 53 also has a better MPG in the city that also lends it a better range with the bigger fuel tank on offer.

2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 53 Vs. 2022 BMW 8-Series Gran Coupe

The BMW clearly has a power deficit when compared to the AMG but that doesn’t make it any less of a luxurious performance-tourer. The engine characteristic is very smooth while the interior is better in terms of visual appeal and layout.

2022 BMW 8-Series Gran Coupe

BMW’s iDrive also plays a very good part in ensuring an intuitive experience for the buyer. The Merc, on the other hand, has more power, a more engaging drive, better rear-seat comfort, and distinct styling. The Merc also proves to be similarly fuel-efficient and has a bigger fuel tank, which also lends it more credit for being a long-distance tourer.

2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 53 Vs. 2022 Porsche Panamera 4S

The Panamera 4S is the better car in terms of handling dynamics and performance but for everything else, the AMG does a better job.

2022 Porsche Panamera 4S

It has a better-crafted interior that is filled with posh materials and visually appealing elements all around, along with a big boot that helps in carrying more luggage for the weekend getaways. The GT 53 has better EPA ratings than the Panamera but the latter has a bigger fuel tank that helps it gain more range.

2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 53 Final Verdict

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 53 is the perfect car for one who is looking for impeccable performance along with a well-crafted interior and comfortable seats that provide a myriad of adjustability and amenities. The safety is top-notch and the fuel economy is rather impressive for a car of this caliber. That said, the AMG GT 53 is the perfect driver’s car that has all the bells and whistles to keep the occupants’ comfy.
