Detailed Review

What's better than a Mercedes S-Class? An AMG Mercedes S-class of course! Inside this magnificent peice of engineering, one can truly understand what it truly means to blend luxury and performance. The AMG S-Class is absolutely sensational, thrilling, with a stunning design too. A twin-turbo V-8, autonomous driving features and more luxuries make this a very desirable vehicle. The three point star logo on the bonnet will bring you respect, and the AMG badges added here and there will bring you some more.

The S63 is bit expensive than its rivals but that extra bit provides a powerful V8 Engine, a luxurious cabin where everything is automatic. Despite weighing more than 2 tons the engine will propel you to 100kmph in just 3.4 seconds. It’s fast, amazingly fast like a Land Rocket.

Expert Review

CARHP Editorial November 28, 2018

With a starting at a price of $147,500, the S63 is not only extremely expensive but quite exclusive too. Its AMG tuned V8 mill is brilliantly powerful, and the luxurious cabin cocoons its occupants in roses, milk, and honey. Despite weighing more than 2 tons the engine will propel you to 100kmph in just 3.4 seconds.

2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Features

The Mercedes S63 AMG is a luxury sedan which only has one trim, Mercedes has not given many options to buyers as there aren't many things left to add on this vehicle.

It has its fundamentals covered and then some; we’re on to the advanced stuff now. Case in point – Intelligent Drive.

- Digital Trends

In an attempt to stay at the head of the pack, the 2018 S-Class receives a major refresh, and the S63 gets a new engine.

Engine and Transmission

The 2018 Mercedes S63 AMG is powered by a 4-liter Biturbo V8. This mighty engine is good for a figure of 603 Horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. It is mated to a 9-speed dual clutch automatic transmission that sends the power to all the wheels. Mercedes has also tweaked the S63 AMG for the better fuel efficiency, although that is quite low on the priority list for most of the buyers.

The BMW Alpina B7 xDrive and Mercedes-Benz AMG S63 lie in nearly the same price range, and Audi S8 Plus undercuts them both by almost 30 grand which adds value to the car. The Merc and the Audi use similar displacement engines, 4-liter twin turbo V8, whereas BMW uses a larger 4.4-liter engine. In terms of power and torque, there isn't much to differentiate between the trio.

Acceleration

The AMG tuned Mercedes moves with a ferocity more suited to supercars. It takes a mere 3 seconds for this car to reach from 0 to 60 MPH, and a little under 12 seconds for a quarter mile run. If you were to find yourself at a drag strip, the S63 won't disappoint you. The sheer amount of torque on tap makes it extremely easy to spin all four wheels.

The only direct competition to AMG S63 is Audi. It is $30,000 cheaper than the AMG S63, and Mercedes has a 147 lb.-ft of torque advantage, yet the Audi manages to match (or beat by a millisecond) the Merc to the 60 MPH and the quarter-mile mark. This is mainly due to the 224 kg weight difference advantage the Audi holds. The Alpina is a little slow comparatively but is fast nonetheless on its own.

Ride and Handling

Mercedes offers different driving modes to the driver; Comfort, ECO, Sport, Race Mode, and a custom setting set by the driver. Apart from that, there is the brilliant and grippy 4-Matic all-wheel-drive system. The steering feels brilliant, and there is plenty of feedback, unlike many modern vehicles which offer electronic steering systems. The handling is effortless, and you don't feel the weight under normal driving conditions. Ride quality is magnificent, and the nearest competitor would perhaps be a magic carpet, but how many of those are on sale?

Braking

As with the performance, braking is quite mind-blowing. The AMG S63 has discs all around and comes to a screeching halt from 70 MPH in just under 160 feet. The weight makes itself apparent under hard braking, and the feeling of inertia is a bit jarring.

The quickest to come to a halt here is the B7 Alpina, which just takes just 151 feet to come to a stop from 70 MPH. The Audi matches the Merc in braking performance, walking just a foot behind.

2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Fuel Economy

If you are looking at efficiency figures in hopes of being disappointed, the AMG Benz will surprise you with its claimed figures. The S63 has a combined gas mileage of 21 MPG, best in class here.

2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Interior

It's hard to overstate how incredible the sixth-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class is. The interior's opulence is more in line with a Bentley or Rolls-Royce than a BMW 7 Series

Elevating its appeal, the 2018 S-Class sports a fresher face thanks to a new bumper with larger air intakes...

...The tail receives a similar sleek tweaking, thanks to a redrawn fascia, crystal-look LED rear lamps and a new lower valence with a bright-framed integrated exhaust outlet.

Dimensions and Weight

The Mercedes AMG S63 is spectacularly large. The chrome and headlamps with three eyebrows just steal the show. The side profile of the vehicle is quite similar to other sedans.

There are a few things to notice too, like 18-inch alloy wheels which gives a classy touch to the car making it's looking more high profile. The daytime running light and all the lighting LEDs makes the car looks more attractive. Mercedes Benz AMG S63 looks much more stylish with its new side lines and front profile. It is one of the heaviest sedans in the market.

Audi S8 Plus

The Mercedes AMG S63 has several advantages over the Audi S8 Plus. It offers better ride & handling, and also offers more features. Mercedes AMG S63 has more spacious cargo capacity, almost 4 cubic feet more than Audi S8 Plus. AMG S63 also comes with a best in class infotainment system.

Audi's biggest bargaining chip is its price tag. It is 30 grand cheaper and has quite a spacious cabin too. If you are on a budget (a 100 thousand dollar budget) then the Audi would be a great brick.

BMW ALPINA B7 xDRIVE

The Mercedes-Benz AMG S63 is nicely outfitted with a comfortable and high-quality cabin, and some intuitive safety features, two 12-inch screens as standard features, and much more. Both the BMW and Mercedes are almost in the same price range which makes the Mercedes AMG S63 value for money car. From fuel economy to performance, from looks to comfort the Mercedes tops the chart.

2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Final Verdict

The 2018 Merc AMG S63 is one of the best luxury sedans out there. it offers the best S-class out there, sporty, luxurious, spacious, and quite a hoot to drive too. It has limited upgrade options available, and the rest are offered as standard. If you are more of a chauffeur-driven type, the Audi S8 Plus might be a better option because of its affordability. For everything else, there is Master, erm, Mercedes AMG S63.
