The 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Coupe is the standard for luxury sports cars. It is real proof that luxury and performance can be packed in a single package and you do not have to compromise on one aspect to achieve another. The flagship coupe in the Mercedes-AMG lineup received some design changes in 2019 and the 2020 model year carries forward the same design language with no major changes. The mechanicals also remained the same and it did not require a change either.

We recommend

The 2020 Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe comes loaded with a generous list of features as standard with the car. Being a flagship in the Coupe lineup, it is already a very expensive car with the best of what Merc has to offer. There is nothing extra that you need to do for performance or comfort. Mercedes offers a ton of customization with the AMG S 63 Coupe. You can even customize every bit of the interior. The optional features come at a significantly expensive price point, so you can customize the car based on your budget.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Coupe Engine and Performance

6.5/10

The Mercedes-AMG series is Merc’s lineup reserved for performance-oriented vehicles. Being the flagship in the S-class AMG series coupe, the AMG S 63 Coupe packs some serious performance under the hood. The 2020 Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe is powered by a 4.0L Biturbo V8 AMG engine. The engine is tuned to produce a maximum power of 603 horsepower while the peak torque output is 664 pound-feet. The engine comes mated to a slick and responsive 9-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels.

The performance of the AMG S 63 Coupe is ample to satisfy any enthusiast. The engine feels refined and there is no delay in power delivery after the driver input. It surges forward quickly off the line. The 9-speed automatic transmission does a great job of keeping the car in the right gear position to match the performance of the engine. The downshifts come pretty fast as you get hard on the gas paddle. Talking about the numbers, the AMG S 63 Coupe takes only 3.4 seconds to reach from 0 to 60 mph while the quarter-mile run takes 11.6 seconds.

The Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe is at par with the rivals in terms of acceleration figures. The Acura NSX comes with the least powerful and the smallest engine in the class but still manages to perform better than the Merc in outright acceleration due to its lightweight. The BMW M8 Competition takes identical timing in the acceleration department. The Audi R8 is also slightly faster than the Merc taking only 3.2 seconds to complete the 0 to 60 mph sprint.

How well does the 2020 Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe handle?

Mercedes is known for making luxurious vehicles and handling has never been one of the fortes for the Merc. However, the AMG lineup does better than the other models of Mercedes-Benz in terms of handling department. The handling of the 2020 Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe is rather impressive. It remains nimble in most situations and you do not require much of an effort to push the car anywhere. But that also turns out to be a downside for a performance coupe as people want to engage with the car and effortless driving does not translate into the engaging drive at all.

The AMG S 63 Coupe gets a sporty suspension setup to keep you planted on the road at higher speeds. The adaptive suspension also allows selecting custom settings for the AMG S 63 coupe based on your driving behavior and mood. The steering wheel is also fairly precise and better than the S-class sedan in terms of feedback of feedback. Still, the competition offers better driver engagement than the Merc for sure. However, the Merc takes lead in the overall comfort inside the cabin as it soaks all the road undulations way better than the rivals irrespective of the road conditions.

How good is the braking performance of the 2020 Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe?

The Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe gets upgraded brakes over the standard AMG S-class series to match the kind of performance that it offers. It uses 15.4-inch brake rotors for the front wheels and 14.2-inch brake rotors for the rear wheels. The braking hardware is at par with the similarly specced rivals. The brakes are able to stop the AMG S 63 Coupe from a speed of 60 mph to a complete halt in under 109 feet. All four brakes get a standard anti-lock braking system to avoid any mishappening in case of panic braking.

The Audi R8 is the lightest car in the segment and also offers the best braking performance. The Audi R8 takes only 95 feet to stop the car from 60 miles per hour to a standstill. The BMW M8 Competition comes second and takes 99 feet to come to a halt from the same speed followed by the Acura NSX. The Mercedes-AMG S63 comes last in terms of braking performance but the braking performance is not bad at all.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Coupe Fuel Economy

6.0/10

When you buy a car that expensive, you do not really care about the fuel efficiency figures. The smile on your face matters more than the mpg figures in such cases. The Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe returns pretty decent fuel efficiency figures. You can expect 17 mpg in the city, 27 mpg on the highway, and 20 mpg of combined fuel economy. The fuel tank capacity of 21.1 gallons is of a standard size for the segment. It can go without the need to take a halt at the gas station for up to 570 miles in case of a highway drive.

The Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe is not the most fuel-efficient car in the segment. The Acura NSX with its smallest engine in the segment takes leads in the fuel economy table. The Merc comes at second position and offers the best range in its class as Acura falls behind in the fuel tank capacity. The Audi R8 has the biggest engine in the class and that is clearly evident when you look at the fuel economy figures. The R8’s engine drinks the highest fuel in the segment.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Coupe Interior

8.5/10

The 2020 Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe comes with a luxurious interior which is true to most of the cars by Mercedes. Since it falls in their flagship segment, it comes with everything that you expect at this price point. Mercedes never try to do anything out of the box in the interior of their car and they try to be sober. The case remains the same for the AMG S 63 Coupe. The interior feels ambient without losing on its subtleness.

The space inside the front row of the AMG S 63 is more than enough to accommodate drivers of any size. The seats are one of the best in the business in terms of overall comfort and you also get massage functionality with them. There are plenty of adjustability options to help you get a comfortable driving position. The rear seats also offer better space than anything else in the segment. Still, it is not the most spacious and adults should avoid being there. The quality of the cabin is up there with the best in the class and everything in the cabin is customizable.

The Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe and the BMW M8 Competition are the only two cars in the segment to have a rear row of seating. The Acura NSX and the Audi R8 come only in a 2-seater configuration. The Merc offers better space in the rear row compared to the Bimmer. The Audi R8 gets the sportiest driving position compared to its rivals. The space inside the front row remains similar in all the cars. Standout interior features in the 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Coupe are:

  • 12-way power front seats
  • Tilt and telescopic steering wheel
  • Front, side, and a rearview camera
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Keyless ignition
  • Cruise control
  • Heads Up display

What is there to keep you entertained in the 2020 Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe?

The 2020 Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe gets two 12.3-inch screens in the front. The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster display merges with the other 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display. The infotainment system of the Mercedes has become among the best in the market for a few years now and you feel that when you get inside the cabin of the AMG S 63 Coupe. The infotainment screen changes the color and the theme based on the driving mode that you select.

The graphics are easy on the eyes and the screen is pretty straightforward to use. There is no lag in the touch response and everything works smoothly. There are a ton of connectivity options with the infotainment system. You can connect your smartphone to the infotainment system with the help of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Once connected, you can also use Google voice recognition for the infotainment controls. The audio is managed via a 13-speaker Burmester surround sound system. Standout infotainment features in the 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Coupe include:

  • A 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display
  • Bluetooth wireless phone connectivity
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Google voice recognition
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • 13-speaker Burmester surround sound system

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Coupe Exterior

8.5/10

The Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe does not look as aggressive as some of its rivals and it is not the type of design that will shout to catch attention. But that is done on purpose and the simplicity is what makes it a stunner in the segment. The AMG S 63 Coupe finds its balance between sportiness and subtleness at the same time. The massive grille at the front differentiates it from any other standard S-class model and places it as an AMG. The grille also houses a big Mercedes logo in the center.

The sleek headlamps are pretty long and compliment the overall look of the car very well. The vents at the bottom are big enough to catch your attention. The bonnet does not get many sharp curves or lines but still looks muscular enough. The side gets beautiful machine-cut alloy wheels. The design at the rear remains similar to the other AMG coupes. The big LED taillights find their way all the way to the side of the car starting from the tailgates.

The Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe is the longest car in the segment which is quite obvious considering it belongs to the S-class lineup. It also has the longest wheelbase followed by the BMW M8 Competition. The Acura NSX is considerably smaller than the Merc and the Bimmer in terms of overall dimensions. The Audi R8 has the most compact dimensions but gets a longer wheelbase than the Acura NSX. Standout exterior features include:

  • 20-inch wheels
  • LED headlights
  • Rain-detecting wipers
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Chrome grille
  • LED Brakelights

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Coupe Safety

8.0/10

The Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe gets some of the best standard safety equipment in its segment. Being a Merc, you do not really need to doubt the safety of the car. Like any other luxury car, it has not been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The car feels solid and everything is well put together. There are plenty of standard passive safety features with the car. The list of active safety features is pretty impressive too but the only downside is that the optional driver aids are overpriced. The safety features include overpriced:

  • Electronic stability control
  • Traction control
  • Active parking assist
  • Front collision mitigation
  • Rear collision mitigation
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane-keeping assist
  • Emergency braking assist

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Coupe Competition

Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe vs. BMW M8 Competition

The BMW M8 Competition offers great performance and is matched by excellent driving dynamics. The driver engagement is hands-down better in the Bimmer compared to the AMG S 63 Coupe. The BMW M8 is also cheaper than the S 63 Coupe with quite a margin. The Merc on the other hand offers better cabin quality and a more spacious and comfortable cabin between the two.

Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe vs. Acura NSX

The Acura NSX offers better performance in terms of outright acceleration than the Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe. The Acura also manages to return better fuel efficiency than the Merc. But in every other department, the AMG S 63 surges ahead of the NSX. The kind of luxury that the Merc offers is hard to match by the other rivals in the segment and it is also more practical with an extra row of seating at the back.

Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe vs. Audi R8

The Audi R8 is a real beat in terms of performance and is a dream for sports car lovers. The R8 has gained huge popularity among sports car lovers over the years for its striking looks, mind-boggling performance, and excellent driving dynamics. There is no way Merc can beat it in these departments. But the luxury that the Merc offers is clearly missing in the Audi R8. The R8’s stiffer suspension setup only makes it worse for daily drives. The Merc is a more versatile car between the two.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Coupe Final Verdict

There are no two ways about it that the Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Coupe is a great car and it serves many purposes. If you are looking for a car that is not too bold but still looks attractive, not too engaging but has the potential to thrill, and not too flashy but offers supreme luxury, the AMG S 63 Coupe is what you should look for. The luxurious cabin and comfortable ride make it a great option for daily drives and the impressive performance makes it ideal for a fun weekend drive.
