The 6.0 Liter V12 Biturbo is good for 621 horsepower, the new AMG S 65 comes with a mammoth twelve-cylinder engine and a whopping $250,900 price tag. Even after all that power under the hood, the S 65 never betrays its refined character.

Features

Being eldest sibling of amongst the S Class Convertibles, the 2018 Mercedes Benz AMG S65 Cabriolet is quite powerful and feature filled than its siblings in the class. Being an AMG take of fabled S Class Convertible the AMG S 65 is packed with a host of luxury features. Although it is offered in only one trim, it is designed in such a way that it can be said the madmen at AMG have finally achieved success in manufacturing a machine that bridges the gap between bruteness and civility.

Mercedes Benz S 65 Cabriolet is offered in a single well-appointed trim. However, you can always go for the optional packages to customize it as you like

Engine

"The only downsides to the S65 are its occasionally clunky seven-speed automatic transmission (here with a conventional torque converter) and the lack of an all-wheel-drive option. Both can be blamed on the V-12’s mountain of torque, which is too great for any other Mercedes transmission or all-wheel-drive transfer case to handle."-CarandDriver

The 6.0 Liter V12 Biturbo engine summons 621 horsepower and 738 lb-ft. of torque. The V12 engine is the Pantheon of Mercedes-AMG engineering and it is earmarked for very special cars. The AMG S 65 reserves that position for itself as one of the crown jewels of the Mercedes-AMG family.

Each engine is supervised by a master-engine builder. It is ensured that highest quality standards are observed. This V12 engine has two turbochargers that can produce a maximum boost pressure of 22 psi. There is a host of technology that delivers instant response throughout the engine's power band.

The AMG S 65's V12 engine is mated to a 7-speed AMG Speedshift Plus (automatic) transmission that offers 3 drive modes. When the Sport mode is engaged, the shit gear at higher rpm while the Manual mode gives complete authority to the driver.

Considering a similar twelve-cylinder engine strategy, the competition doesn't come close to AMG's coveted 621 hp mark. The Bentley Continental GT produces 582 hp and has a 39 hp deficit when compared to the AMG S 65. The Aston Martin produces 580 hp and suffers a 41 hp deficit to the AMG S 65.

Acceleration

AMG's V12 Biturbo engine has a mammoth torque capacity of 738 lb-ft. Those numbers sure look terrific on paper but in the real world, this amount of torque is needed to do move a 4,971 lbs. behemoth from A to B. It hurls to the 60 mph marker in 3.7 seconds. This feat is complemented by an impressive quarter mile run within 11.9 seconds. All that speed is complemented by a ferocious exhaust growl from a true dual exhaust system.

Owing to a lighter curb weight, the Aston Martin Volante is the fastest to the coveted 60 mph marker. Volante manages it within 3.5 seconds. The AMG S 65 loses out by a margin of 0.2 seconds. Whereas the Continental GT is slowest among the lot at 4.4 seconds.

Ride and Handling

AMG S 65 utilizes an electromagnetic power steering that is responsive in corners and also adept at low-speed maneuvers. The steering inspires precise on-center feel and boasts of superior straight-line stability at high speed. The available drive modes \u2013 Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ allow for adjustments in shift points, throttle response and steering input. There is a fourth Manual mode which allows for \xe0 la carte settings where you can configure a mode of your own.

The S 65 sits upon AMG Adaptive Sport Suspension which tries to balance out two naturally opposing forces in motoring - cornering ability and comfort. This suspension provides accurate damping that reduces body roll during intensive driving scenarios. Selectable drive modes allow for a customized handling response to suit your driving style.

Braking

The front brake rotors measure 15.4 inches and supported by 6-piston calipers (fixed type). The rear rotors are 14.2 inches in diameter. The brakes provide definite feedback and shed speed at a tremendous rate. The AMG High-Performance composite braking system that is built to deliver high performance while sustaining a long life.

For folks, who want to test AMG S65's mettle on a track day? There are optional carbon ceramic composite brakes which can endure extreme heat and offer high-performance braking while being 40 percent lighter than the standard brakes.

Due to lack of braking data, it is difficult to accurately describe the 0-60mph stopping distance. But with its current host of technology, the AMG S 65 is expected to pull off some crisp numbers.

Fuel Economy

The V12 engines are ever thirsty still the S 65 offers a combined mpg of 16. Aston Martin Volante also offers an identical fuel combined fuel efficiency of 16 mpg. At 14 mpg, the Continental GT offers the lowest combined mpg in this segment.

The Bentley Continental GT has been there at the pedestal of high-end luxury GT cars. And has set a high standard for other cars in this segment.

Dimensions and Weight

The S 65 weighs 4,971 lbs. while measuring 198.9inches in length. 75.3inches in width, and 56.1in in height. The Cabriolet doesn't seem too long nor too small, but perfect for its class. From the ground, it measures 5.0 inches, which is a tad too close to the ground

The wheelbase is far longer than its rivals, measuring at 116.0 inches. Even with these measurements, the car is easy to maneuver without a hassle, while maintaining a good turning radius.

Competition

Mercedes Benz AMG S 65 Cabriolet vs Aston Martin Vanquish S Volante

The Aston Martin costs $311,650 and dearer to the AMG S65 by a margin of $61,000. It offers a pretty powerful engine that produces 580 hp, a delicious design, comfort albeit only for 2 people, more rear cargo space, and an excellent ride and balance in driving. The car weighs way lighter when compared to the S 65 and performs similarly in driving. Yet it is a great alternative to the S 65.

Mercedes Benz AMG S 65 Cabriolet vs Bentley Continental GT Convertible

The Continental GT more than $14,000 less than the S 65, while offering a 6.0L W12 engine and 8-speed automatic transmission. It offers 39 less horsepower and a massive difference of over 207 lb-ft in torque. While not offering as powerful powertrain as compared to the S 65, the GT W12 offers a combined mpg of 14 and many features seen in the Mercedes. It offers a balanced ride and handling while giving a modest performance. By no means is the Continental GT a bad choice if affordability is a problem when considering the Mercedes.

Final Verdict

The updated Mercedes AMG S 65 Cabriolet offers a complete package. S 65 has comes with an elegant design, a V12 Biturbo engine that runs refined but offers massive power at the tap of a pedal, and optimum cabin comfort and luxury. But it commands a price tag of worth the hefty price tag of $250,900. Sure it has got everything the S-Class segments offered by Mercedes, but for that price range, there are definitely other viable options.

The S 65 just does not seem to be justifiable that price tag. For instance, another cabriolet in S Class, the AMG S 63 which costs a good $80,000 less, not only offers a V8 that is quicker than the V12 but also packs most of the features offered in S 65. But S 65 is the pinnacle of the S-Class and if you want to choose the best Mercedes has to offer then S 65 is a befitting choice.
