2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 65 Coupe Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

CARHP Editorial Updated on: October 13, 2019

The Mercedes AMG S65 Coupe is a two-door, four-seater version of the Mercedes S-Class. The 2019 AMG Coupe competes with the Bentley Continental GT and Aston Martin DB11. Although it comes with an AMG tag, the S 65 Coupe shares it underpinnings with the regular S Class Coupe. It is essentially a soft GT-car that was conceived to travel pretty long distances.

Expert Review

In 2018, S Class received some significant updates with new engines and tech. The AMG S65 Coupe wears a set of OLED tail lights around a big ‘Panamerica’ grille. The S65 Coupe is powered by a huge 6 liter V12 engine.

On the tech front, the AMG S65 receives the latest in semi-autonomous driver assistance tech, including the newest version of Merc’s adaptive cruise control. At $238,900, The S 65 does see quite a stiff competition, with the likes of Aston Martin DB11 V12 Coupe, and the Bentley Continental GT V8 Coupe.

If you are looking for a V12 engine powered Coupe, the chances are high that you have zeroed in on the Mercedes S 65 Coupe. The S65 is available in a single well-appointed trim. Mercedes offers a galore of features as standard fitment. If you want to personalize your S65, then there are optional packages to fulfill your requirements.

2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 65 Coupe Engine and Performance

Rocketing around isn't even necessary to impress bystanders with an S65. Just park it and let the engine's authoritative warble hint at your net worth. Instead of the S63's dual-mode exhaust, the S65 has a single, always-on loud setting that barks each time you pull away from a stop and the V-12 clears its throat. - Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

The new AMG S 65 is powered by the tried-and-tested 6.0L V12 engine, boasting a staggering 621 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque right into the aft wheels. The luxury coupe is geared by a 7-speed automatic transmission which also allows manual shifts via the paddle-shifters. The luxurious interior and cabin scream out Mercedes' sheer attention to elegant craftsmanship, which is terrific.

The V12 engine is the Pantheon of Mercedes-AMG engineering and it is earmarked for very special cars. The Mercedes AMG S 65 Coupe reserves that position for itself as one of the crown jewels of the Mercedes-AMG family. The power delivery is so uniquely linear, and it would be a surprise when you find two turbochargers under the hood.

The S 65 is really quick! But the way its masks speeds is incredible. Even when you are doing triple digit speeds it would actually feel like you are only doing two digits. The V12 roars past leaving behind dust, with no hiccups in driving. The transmission, on the other hand, it is old and has an occasional clunky feeling.

Sitting right in the middle is the Aston Martin DB11, which boasts a good 100 hp more than the Continental GT but just 21 hp less than the AMG S 65. What is more surprising is how the Mercedes, being a luxury coupe, is more powerful in comparison to the DB11, which falls under the sports car segment. The Continental GT clearly lacks the power which its rivals offer but it still offers a decent performance in itself.

The Biturbo V12 engine propels the entirety of S 65's real estate swiftly. On paper, the V12's 738 lb-ft. torque output might seem otherworldly but considering the S 65's curb weight all that torque is quintessential for keeping the AMG S65 Coupe quick on its feet. The big luxury brage takes 4.0 seconds to hurl past the 60 mph marker.

If you want to turn up the fun, there are two driving modes: Sport and Sport+. Once you are in the Sport setting the S 65 AMG is a little more eager to downshift and engine is excited to put down the entirety of the mammoth 738 lt-ft torque to the ground.

While this isn't too bad, the Aston Martin DB11 appears a tad faster in both comparisons. This doesn't come as a surprise because the Aston has a better power to weight ratio. All three vehicles are very impressive when you take into consideration their weight and the amount of comfort and luxury on offer.

Emission generated by the Continental GT at 9.3g/mi is better than the S 65 and the DB11. This is because of the different capacity of the engine and powertrain each car uses. The Mercedes emits the worst amount of CO2, at 11.1, when compared to its rivals.

Handling and steering

The Merc S Class AMG Coupe has a galore of tech features. And it's those technical systems that dominate the driving experience. The level of synchronization amongst these systems is quite impressive. There is a lot going on in the S-Class, but the components work so well in sync that you would hardly know.

The S 65 is equipped with an electromechanical power-steering system that is configured by AMG. It is well balanced and increases its heft as the speeds increase. The steering inspires precise on-center feel and boasts of superior straight-line stability at high speed. The available drive modes '3 Comfort, Sport and Sport+ allow for adjustments in shift points, throttle response and steering input.

Depending upon the changes made to the different driving modes, the suspension, and the powertrain react accordingly. Sport and Sport+ will tighten the suspension and react more like a track car. Comfort, on the other hand, will give a nice, normal laid-back driving performance and better fuel efficiency.

The front brake rotors measure 15.4 inches and supported by 6-piston calipers (fixed type). The rear rotors are 14.2 inches in diameter. The brakes provide definite feedback and shed speed at a tremendous rate. The AMG High-Performance composite braking system that is built to deliver high performance while sustaining a long life. The S 65 is responsive, comfortable and easy to drive. The pedals are responsive without a hassle, where AMG has done a great job.

Weighing a good 5,060lbs, the Continental GT still offers great braking and handling, whereas the Aston Martin with excellent handling and ride outperforms both its rivals while remaining lightest at 3,902lbs.

2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 65 Coupe Fuel Economy

The V12 with all that horsepower and torque will come at a massive expense; fuel economy. While the S 65 isn't really made for efficiency in mind, it still provides a mere modest mpg. If efficiency is a concern, it'll be a wise choice to choose the Comfort mode, which switches to using less performance from the engine while also providing a nice and comfortable drive.

MPG (combined)

The DB11 with a similar engine and performance gives a tad better mpg compared to the S 65. The Continental GT with a V8 and lesser horsepower and torque evidently gives a better highway mpg yet remains similar to the rest of the field. The DB11 clearly isn't a bad choice for it gives pretty much similar numbers and is a bit more powerful when compared to its rivals here.

2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 65 Coupe Interior

The dashboard is gorgeous and the technology it houses first-rate. The front-seats (which, like those in the convertible, have a vent in the headrests that blows hot air at the back of your neck) are among the most comfortable fitted to any car, and though access can be a bit of a pain, you can sit a couple of adults in the back without soliciting too many complaints. -TopGear

Seating and comfort

The S-Class is the benchmark the other manufacturers want to reach. The design elements get trickled down to other Mercedes cars. The material quality is impeccable. The front driver and passenger seats offer 12-way power adjustment. The seats are inviting and help you to find the ideal sitting position. The system also offers three memory settings and recalls the seating position with the touch of a button.

The seats also offer adjustable lumbar support and side bolstering. In case of any extreme cornering, the seats automatically increase bolstering to keep the occupants tucked in comfortably. To take the in-cabin experience to a higher level, the seats are offered with six massage settings that also combine massage and heat to provide a world-class experience.

Passenger capacity

Front (Head/Shoulder/Leg) (In.)

Second (Head/Shoulder/Leg) (In.)

While all the three cars can accommodate 4 passengers, the Mercedes is a tad more spacious compared to the Bentley and the Aston Martin. In fact, the DB11 barely has any space in the rear, where there's not much headroom nor legroom for adults but can only accommodate smaller children or be used as an extension to the boot space. Overall, the S 65 is more spacious and can accommodate passengers rather easily.

Cargo Volume

The S 65 comes with a generous 14.1ft boot space as compared to 12.6ft in Bentley. The Aston Martin, on the other hand, is just not made for distant trips. It can stuff luggage for a road trip but that's about it. The S 65 and the Bentley offer larger cargo volume than the Aston Martin, where the S 65 triumphs both the cars in offering a larger boot space.

Infotainment System

Mercedes’s COMAND Infotainment System is one of the best there is. It offers everything one can expect for. The default navigation program is good but it can get better as we have already seen in Mercedes’s next generation of COMAND System which includes Augmented Reality (AR) maps.
The dashboard looks amazing with the 12.3-inch center display and a driver’s display of the same size. The system is easy to use and can be controlled using either the trackpad or the touchscreen itself. The driver’s display is also amazing and displays a wide variety of information such as direction, tire pressure, vehicle diagnostics and it can also be used to control the infotainment system among other functions.

Interior Features

Some standard interior features include:

  • Nappa leather seats and headliner
  • Heated front armrests
  • All-LED interior lighting
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • NFC technology
  • 12.3-inch infotainment system
  • AMG illuminated door sills
  • Automatic interior temperature control

2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 65 Coupe Exterior

The revised 2019 Mercedes-AMG S-Class sedan, coupe and cabriolet retain the basic lines of their standard Benz counterparts, but all boast unique and more aggressive details that enable them to stand out. Exclusive lower bodywork, gaping front fascias, big 20-inch wheels and AMG badging provide details to the larger story.-KelleyBlueBook

Dimensions and Weight

The design for this flagship S Class draws heavily from the Merc's heritage. The Coupe's beautiful sweeping lines reflect the astute minimalism of the German design. Another unmistakably S Class trait is the pure pillarless profile. This makes the AMG S 65 irresistible to look from an aesthetic point of view. The absence of B-pillars also signifies the engineering advancement that makes such a design possible and offers structural rigidity without the expense of additional weight.

The S 65 weighs 4,817lbs while measuring 198.9in in length. 75.3in in width, and 56.1in in height. The Coupe doesn't seem too long nor too small, but perfect for a coupe. From the ground, it measures 4.6in, which is a bit too close to the ground. The wheelbase is far longer than its rivals, measuring at 115.9. Even with these measurements, the car is easy to maneuver without a hassle, while maintaining a good turning radius.

The S 65 sits along the likes of Continental GT and DB11, but measures a bit longer in its wheelbase, ensuring a better and more stable ride, and length. The DB11 weighs the least amongst the other two cars, and measures the shortest, while the S 65 is the tallest amongst the rest. The Continental GT has the best ground clearance amongst the rest while also maintaining a sort of middle-ground between the DB11 and S 65.

Mercedes AMG S65 Coupe vs Bentley Continental GT V8 Coupe

The Continental GT V8 costs more than $35,000 less than the S 65, while offering a 4.0L V8, 8-speed automatic transmission. It offers 121 less horsepower and a massive difference of over 250lb-ft in torque. While not offering as powerful powertrain as compared the S 65, the GT V8 does offer a better mpg and few features seen in the Mercedes, and does manage to stay head-to-head in those segments. It offers a balanced ride and handling while giving a modest performance for the powertrain offered, all for less CO2 emission as well.

By no means is the Continental GT a bad choice if affordability is a problem when considering the Mercedes.

Mercedes AMG S65 Coupe Aston Martin DB11 V12

The Aston Martin DB11 V12 costs $216,498 and basically sits right in the sweet spot when considering either the Bentley or Mercedes. It offers a pretty powerful engine, a better pick up, great design, comfort albeit only for 2 people, lesser cargo volume, and an excellent ride and balance in driving. It offers almost the same mpg, if not better by a bit, and emits less CO2 as compared to the S 65.

The car weighs way lighter compared to the S 65 and performs similarly in driving. Paddle-shifting enthusiasts will be disappointed to know that the DB11 does not come with a manual transmission, something the S 65 offers. Yet it is a great alternative to the S 65.

2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 65 Coupe Final Verdict

When introduced, the S65 AMG was then the most powerful S-Class model. It carries a whopping $238,900 price tag. The AMG S65 has been specially tuned by the carmaker's performance division. The 2019 AMG S 65 proves to be a complete package; it's got the looks, power and the elegance suited for the top 1 percent of the world.

The S 65 just seems to make a lot less sense when you start to justify the price tag against the features on offer. For instance, its sister model, the S 63 which costs a good $70,000 less, offers a V8 but has mostly all the features in the S 65 and is even quicker than the V12! So why the S 65? Mercedes S65 is for those who want the best Mercedes out there.
