Detailed Review

The AMG SL 65 is from the Mercedes SL family which started in early 1950s basically serving for sports and long route journeys. From then to now the SL has changed a lot, be it the regular roadster or the performance-oriented AMG engine. The 2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG SL 65 employees one of its kind 6.0L twin turbocharged V12 under its hood producing 621 hp and 738 lb.-ft of torque. The engine sends power to the rear wheels of the car via a 7-speed automatic transmission.

2018 SL 65 Roadster costs a whopping $222,000 but for the V12 engine and the exquisite interior that Mercedes offer, the amount doesn’t feel much. It competes against the likes of Porsche 911 Turbo S cabriolet and the italian exotic Ferrari Portofino Convertible. All these cars are equipped to the brim and get brute powertains. Let’s see how Merc SL 65  fares against them.

2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG SL 65 Features

The SL 65 comes with a V12 engine that generates 621 horsepower and a massive 738 pound-feet of torque. Mercedes wanted that the car should never feel underpowered and that AMG badging ensures it never does. It is available in only one single trim. Power open and close rear trunk, glass panorama sunroof and COMAND 5.1 Infotainment system are standard in both trims. Electric power-assist speed-sensing steering, LED brake lights and Bang & Olufsen BeoSound premium sound system including 12 speakers are available in SL 65.

We Recommend

With Mercedes SL 65 you don't get much to choose from as it has only one trim on offer which comes pretty well appointed. It is one of the most equipped cars from the German carmaker but if you have enough dough in your pocket, go for the optional available packages to enhance the already notched up cabin and technology.

"Razor-sharp handling isn’t its calling card, nor has it ever been. This is a grand touring machine with grace, presence and power. This flagship Mercedes convertible is as much about luxury and comfort as it is performance." - Kelley blue book

Engine and Transmission

The AMG SL 65 is carrying a hand-built 6.0L bi-turbo V12 under its hood producing 621 hp and an enormous amount of torque i.e. 738 lb.-ft. The torque is so high that it can smoke those continental tires even in 4th gear. The engine is engaged to 7-speed G-Tronic automatic transmission to drive the rear wheels; this can take the car up to 186 mph but top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph but 186 mph is optional with the AMG driver's package.

The Porsche 911 Turbo SCabriolet and the Ferrari Portofino Convertible are somewhere comparable to the SL 65 in terms of horsepower but SL 65 has got no match for its torque.

The acceleration of the SL 65 is towards the high end, it makes 0-60 mph run in just 3.7 secs while the quarter mile is yet to be tested. The company assures that it would catch 130 mph in less than 13 secs.

The car is behind the Porsche and the Ferrari but still 3.7 secs to reach 60 MPH is great. It is due to the extra 500 lbs. that SL 65 is carrying. The aluminum chassis reinforced with steel beams and the big block V12 are things making the SL 65 heavy.

The 2018 AMG SL 65 is not itself tested for braking distance. It is using slotted and vented disc rotors on all four wheels. These are the same discs as in the SL 63, the SL 63 stops in 102 ft. from 60 mph. The SL 65 is 100 lbs. heavier if this stops under 105 ft. from 60 mph that would be great for such a heavy vehicle.

The Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet is using bigger discs than the AMG and also is 500 lbs. lighter, so it will naturally stop in lesser distance.

2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG SL 65 Fuel Economy

This category is not for those who are looking for mileage, all the machines are performance-based and not designed for fuel economy. Still, 19 MPG can be considered as good for such a huge displacement engine.

The tiny Porsche is capable of giving 21 MPG taking advantage of its lighter weight and also performing best in 0-60 mph timing.

2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG SL 65 Interior

"The SL roadster has yet to receive the lavish, flush-mounted switchgear and massive display screens of its siblings like the S-Class Cabriolet, but it’s luxurious nonetheless. Sixteen-way power-operated seats with sun-reflecting leather upholstery are supportive and functional. Even those over 6-feet tall can be comfortable, a rarity in roadsters.- Kelley Blue Book"

Seating and Comfort

Seats are multiple ways power adjustable which are heated and ventilated as well. The interior is leather stitching all over in royal black color, the panorama sunroof can be lightened or darkened accordingly. The car is fitted with gas pressurized shocks which offer progressively increasing stiffness and is suitable for both city and track driving.

The Porsche 911 Turbo SCabriolet and the Ferrari Portofino Convertible are 2+2 seaters and cannot be considered as 4 seaters because a teen or an adult can't fit in the back seat perhaps these can be used for storage.

Infotainment System

SL 65 is using COMMAND 5.1 Infotainment System which is not very advanced as it uses switches for changing engine and suspension modes. The Bluetooth works well with Bang & Olufsen BeoSound premium sound system including 12 speakers, moreover the storage between the seats has 3 USB ports. To switch between heating and ventilation of seats and adjusting the seats there are switches which are outdated.

Cargo space

The trunk volume is 8.5 cubic feet which is average in the class as the Ferrari can store 10.3 cubic feet. The trunk in SL 65 is power open and close.

Dimensions and Weight

If seen from side almost 40% area is the hood that's carrying a big block V12 and under that is the automatic drive train. The new design comes with a new AMG chrome grill, aggressive air intakes and panorama sunroof. The rear of the car has got a spoiler on the trunk, big and bold brake lights and a long trunk design.

The ABS and driveline traction control systems are pretty helpful in wet conditions and during panic braking.

2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG SL 65 Competition

Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet vs Mercedes Benz SL 65 Convertible

The Porsche is the lightest and hence the quickest is 0-60 mph with a top speed of 198 mph and it manages to provide the highest mileage, it is all for the lowest cost. The car is pretty aggressive on track and using an advanced infotainment system unlike the SL 65. Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet is for those who precisely measure numbers in terms of performance.

Ferrari Portofino Convertible vs Mercedes Benz SL 65 Convertible

Portofino is born only for racing like all Ferraris, the company claims a top speed of over 199 mph. The car drives smoothly on a race track; it is pretty efficient in putting the power down. Portofino looks like F12 from the front. What is better than a cheap Ferrari?

2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG SL 65 Final Verdict

The SL 65 is a powerful contender in sports car list. The car performs very well on city road and on track it is pretty fast, the torque is enough to make the tires smoke even in 4th gear. The speed is electronically limited to 155 mph but can achieve top speed of 186 mph through AMG driver's package. Except for the infotainment system, the SL 65 performs marvelous in every test, so this a car for the people who expect all in one car.
