The Mercedes AMG SL65 is an AMG branded roaster and has been around for quite a while. Being a Mercedes it is most probably one of the luxurious roadsters around and being a part of AMG family means serious performance. The 2017 AMG SL65 is not only just upgraded but also got totally refreshed exteriors designing.

The SL65 hides a 621hp V12 powerhouse with AMG 7-speed automatic transmission which offers a supercar performance, along with a 6-digit price tag of $219,850. The all-new AMG SL65 now features a more aggressive front, LED lights, new rear diffuser, new roof construction, and electric wind deflector.

This two-seater roadster is not only just powerful but is luxurious at the same time not to mention all the new tech upgrades that make it more convenient as well as fun to ride. The SL65 is quite a unique roadster in itself but in today’s era, we are never out of options, like the Aston Martin V12 Vantage S and the Porsche 911 Turbos S are other competitors in this class.

We recommend

When it comes to choices Mercedes has not left much to choose. As I mentioned above the SL lineup has a lot to offer but the SL65 has no other variant or doesn’t feature any major upgrade or change cause there is no space for that. You get a fully loaded infotainment system, a massive powerhouse, hi-end safety features and best in class interiors.

Well, you do get some packages and options like red seat belts, red brake calipers for sportier looks but nothing more than that.

Engine

8.3/10
“Despite having just two seats and offering up engines packing as much as 621 horsepower, the new Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is no sports car. It never has been. This is a grand touring machine. Oh, it can go fast when you want it to, extremely fast, but the new SL is as much about luxury and comfort as it is performance.”- Kelley Blue Book

Engine and Transmission

The Mercedes AMG SL65 features a 6.0L V12 engine that produces a massive 621hp along with 738 ft.-lb. of torque. It is further mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission. The massive torque can make you literally imagine the tires screeching under you. Despite all this power, the SL65 can handle itself pretty well as it has the awesome power to weight ratio.

When it comes to competition, the SL65 has set the bars pretty high as it features the most powerful engine in the whole class followed by the Porsche 911 Turbo S and the Aston Martin V12. In terms of power SL65 is way ahead of the competition but as we all know in the world of automobiles, with great power doesn’t always comes the great performance.

Acceleration

The Mercedes AMG SL65 featuring a 6.0 V12 offers supercar performance. It can do 0-60mph in just 3.6 sec and can hit a quarter mile in just under 11.6 sec. For a 6.0L V12 that might not be a big deal but considering its body weight and size that’s quite commendable. Well compared to the power it has to the performance it offers, it is pretty good but not enough to be the best in the class.

The AMG SL65 is the second fastest car in the whole segment as the Porsche 911 turbo S convertible with its 580hp turbocharged engine hits 0-60mph in just 2.8 sec, that’s just insane. Despite the power gap, the Porsche is way lighter which gives it an upper hand. As for the Aston Martin Vantage, it is pretty fast itself but still stays behind with just 0.2 sec.

Handling and Steering

The SL65 is a fun to drive roadster, despite all that power it is capable of offering a very balanced smooth hassle free ride, it is comfortable for long drives as well as a daily commute and you won’t even feel the V12 under the hood.

The Adaptive cruise control, Lane keeping assist comes really handy on the highway as the car drives itself. But the moment you go hard on the gas, the car just takes away roaring it V12, and you can literally feel the 738lb.-ft. of torque under your feet. The SL65 features power steering, pedal shifters, independent suspension along with 5 different drive modes including Race and Individual mode to tune the vehicle dynamics.

Braking

The AMG SL65 comes standard with 15.4/14.2 inch ventilated disc brakes, again these big brakes do have intense stopping power but it’s a big car as well. The SL65 comes standard with 4-wheel ABS, Brake Drying, traction control, stability control, emergency brake preparation, and emergency braking assist.

In terms of competition, the 911 Turbo S with its light body and big brakes leads the segment followed by Aston Martin, while there is no data available on the SL65.

Fuel Economy

In the Segment where we are talking about 6-figure cars with V12 sitting under there hood, the fuel economy is one of the last thing you will ever think of. But in competition it matters. The AMG SL65 offers an average mileage of 14/21 mpg with a combined mileage of 17 mpg. It features a V12 so that’s some efficiency.

Now, the SL65 is not the best in the competition as again the Porsche 911 Turbo takes the lead, with its lighter body, more refined engine and smart power delivery. The V12 vantage, on the other hand, is the least efficient car in this whole segment.

Interior

“A beautiful and beautifully built interior has always been an important part of the Mercedes-Benz SL’s appeal. For 2017, top-notch materials and exacting construction exceed even the highest expectations. Seat comfort is almost sinful.”-Kelley Blue Book

Seating and Comfort

The AMG SL65 is two doors, two-seater roadster and features one of the most luxurious interiors in the whole segment. Talking about styling, the interior is sporty yet comfortable, full of soft-touch materials and high-quality leather. Well, the center console does feature some old school analog controls which look pretty classy but has both positive and negative feedback.

The SL65 comes standard with 12-way power sports seats with premium leather, the seats are height adjustable, multi-level heating with massaging and lumbar support. It gets a multi-function steering wheel, analog gauge cluster with the multifunction display, a high-resolution center display with a center controller, door mounted seat controller, turbine-style air-vents and has got quite some storage.

The 2017 AMG SL65 Roadster has got fully refreshed exteriors. It has new AMG grille, with more aggressive front, a new rear diffuser, aggressive looking LED head/tail lights and a new roof construction that enables it to be opened and closed at 24mph.

The AMG SL65 is 182.7inch long and 73.9 inches wide with a body height of 51.2 inches, and weighs 4211 lbs. Being such a long roadster spares plenty of space for a two-seater cabin along with a long bonnet housing a massive V12. The AMG SL65 has a ground clearance of 5.8 inch which keeps a very low profile making vehicle well planted at higher speed.

Competition

Mercedes AMG SL65 VS Aston Martin V12 Vantage S convertible

The Aston Martin V12 Vantage S is a 6-figure fun to ride convertible by Aston Martin. The Vantage S is a pretty powerful car and offers intense performance, when it comes to luxury it is on par with the AMG SL65. The V12 Vantage has a very intimidating body designing and has a huge fan following.

The V12 Vantage is a unique piece of engineering style, class, power, performance, comfort it has everything but when it comes to competition, it gets easily outshined by both the AMG SL65 and the 911 Turbo S but despite the difference, it is one car to dream of.

Mercedes AMG SL65 VS Porsche 911 Turbo S convertible

The Porsche 911 Turbo S convertible is the most insane car in this whole segment. The level of power and performance with the amount of comfort it offers is just amazing. The car is designed in such a way that every single curve has its own significance and the vehicle dynamics is just on a different league.

Compared to SL65, the only aspect the 911 stays behind is the cargo volume which is 0.2 cubic foot and despite being overpowered by the AMG, the Porsche offers more intense, more refined performance, better vehicle dynamics is way lighter and has better practicality.

Final Verdict

The AMG SL65 is way more than a performance car, the massive powerhouse, next-generation vehicle dynamics, luxurious interior and hi-end safety features along with that stunning looking body makes this roadster really special. Well the Mercedes SL65 do get outshined by the Porsche 911 but when it comes to paying a 6-figure price tag you don’t go by numbers you go by heart.

Even though it gets outperformed or outshined by the Porsche, even though it's not a class-leading roadster anymore but it will always be a winner for true Mercedes fans.
