Detailed Review

Mercedes Benz is back in the entry level coupe segment with its style siren, this year. The 2018 C 300 4Matic is as gorgeous as it can get reminding us of the larger E class and S-class models. Unlike most ofits competitors who provide agile handling and eloquent power, the C 300 isn't much of a performer butit promises to pamper its occupants in one of the finest interiors and inspiring aesthetics in the segment.

Priced at around $45000, the Mercedes-Benz C 300 doesn't offer much choices when it comes to engine options. The coupe comes loaded with a two litre inline-four cylinder engine which provides amplepower, if not thrilling. However, an all-wheel-drive proves to be a better alternate for those in search ofmore punchy acceleration and torque. The 7-speed auto transmission makes way for a new 9-speedautomatic transmission which is standard configuration for both RWD and AWD variants. The German beauty offers uncompromised luxury regardless of the coupe or cabriolet styling.

Mercedes has made some of the features standard with the 2018 C 300 like blind-spot monitoring, push-startbutton and a new 18-inch wheel design. However, some of the essential connectivity features of theinfotainment system like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are still available as add-ons with additionalcosts and are pretty expensive, just like the car.

Priced at around $45000, the 2018 Mercedes-Benz C300 Coupe doesn't offer many choices when it comes to engine options. The coupe comes loaded with a 2-liter inline-four cylinder engine which provides ample power, if not thrilling. The 7-speed auto transmission makes way for a new 9-speed automatic transmission which is the standard configuration for both RWD and AWD variants.

2018 Mercedes-Benz C 300 Coupe Features

The coupe is just available in one trim which is powered by a 2-liter inline-4 turbocharged engine. With better torque and acceleration, an AWD variant is also available. The engine is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission which is a standard for both RWD and AWD.

We recommend

There's nothing much to choose when it comes the Mercedes-Benz C 300. The biggest decision one has to make is choosing between the RWD and AWD variant. If you are content with the average power and performance of the C 300, you may go with rear-wheel drive. However, those hunting for some action with added torque may choose the RWD. Regardless of whichever powertrain you choose, we'd recommend you to add the advanced lighting package for added benefits of auto-high beams and illuminated door sills.

The C300 performs with luxury-car smoothness and is a joy to drive because it's easy to maneuver in tight spaces and requires little effort from the driver in typical conditions. -Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

The 2018 C 300 comes with just one engine option. The coupe is powered by the 2-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine which produces a maximum power of 241 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. However, the alternate AWD variant adds some more torque to the figures at the cost of fuel economy.

It shares the bottom of the chart with the Lexus RC when it comes to power. Powered by a similar sized engine, Kia churns out a whopping power of maximum 255 hp to lead the flock. The Mercedes may be a bit relaxed than others in power, but in terms of torque, the C300 is way ahead of its competitors with a max torque of 273 hp for RWD and 281 hp for AWD variant.

The Benz C 300 shows potential when raced for a very short period of time due to its shorter initial gear ratios and better-tuned transmission. It pulls up from 0-60 in just 5.8 sec which is fastest in the segment after BMW. However, these figures change for the quarter-mile test and the coupe proves to be a bit lazy with a slight hint of turbo lag. The C300 takes 14.6 seconds to hit the quarter-mile mark making it the slowest among the segment after the Lexus RC.

Handling and Ride quality

The 2018 Mercedes-Benz C 300 is easy to handle but not in a sporty way. The coupe provides enough confidence to the driver on relaxed turns with balanced body roll. Steering is manageable but not fun and certainly lacks the feel and response one gets from a BMW.

The 2-series provides good ride quality on highways and paved roads but struggles terribly on undulations and rough surfaces. The cabin suffers from excessive vertical movements and jolts and suspension barely does its job. The sport suspension is optional but you get into more trouble if you go for it- the sport mode improves handling slightly but makes the ride even stiffer and comfort goes down significantly.

The C300's braking is quicker than its acceleration. The coupe comes to a halt from 60 mph in just 109 ft which is also the best in the segment while the Kia Stinger being a bit lazy hits the bottom of the table. ABS provides good feedback and stops the car without any hassles maintaining stability and composure even if one goes hard on the pedal.

2018 Mercedes-Benz C 300 Coupe Fuel Economy

The C300 is one of the thirstiest coupes in the segment with a combined mileage of 26 mpg as a result of 22/30 mpg on city/highways. The AWD variant goes even low on the economy scale with a combined mileage of 24 mpg. However, the efficiency isn't that bad on roads and C300 performs similarly to BMW or any other competitor.

2018 Mercedes-Benz C 300 Coupe Interior

The cabin of the 2018 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is one of the most elegant in the class. It includes an array of high-grade materials, and the craftsmanship is superb. This praise doesn't include the infotainment system, however. The front seats are comfortable, but tall travelers will have a hard time riding in the back for too long. -cars.usnews

Seating and comfort

The interior of Mercedes Benz is a treat to the eyes. It has black and beige dual-toned cabin along with metal-ringed air vents is aesthetically pleasing. The quality of materials used is top-notch and looks downright luxurious all over and the front seats can be manually adjusted for perfect comfort- additional heated seats are available as an option for further pampering. The instrument panel is futuristic and the mouse-like controller for the infotainment system has been replaced by a touch-pad which makes it much more easier to use.

The front cabin has ample headroom, in fact, one of the most spacious in the segment but it's the rear cabin which makes it challenging to call this the best. Due to its smaller length, the C300 can't accommodate 2 passengers at the rear comfortably and the legroom is bit cramped and pose a challenge to get in and out of the car easily.

Cargo/Trunk Volume

The Mercedes-Benz is surely not a utility vehicle which is evident from the boot-space. The coupe provides 10.5 ft-cube of cargo space which is why it shares the lowest position of the chart with the Lexus RC.

Infotainment System

Inside, it comes loaded with a  7-inch infotainment screen running the Mercedes' COMAND software with navigation, a touchpad controller with gesture control, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. The sound output works just fine unless you upgrade it to the Burmester audio system which fills the coupe with 13 speakers to produce an immersive surround sound experience.

Mercedes lacks the essential smartphone integration options. The Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink are offered as an add-on which increases the price of the car by at least $500.

2018 Mercedes-Benz C 300 Coupe Exterior

The details matter less to the C-Class’ overall impression of fluidity. The LED lines over the headlights frame the front end nicely along with large low-set air intakes. The streamlined nose blends into slightly flared fenders, on back to the softly curved tail that’s strongly cued after the S-Class. -thecarconnection

The coupe almost carries over the same look and style as that of its predecessor. The only notable difference is the new shade of blue that is added to the catalog this year. Mercedes-Benz has also launched a new 18-inch design to further add to the style of this pretty Coupe.

Dimensions and Weight

The C 300 is the top coupe in the segment which avails ample headroom in the cabin. The car is narrow and cramped which makes the rear cabin space a bit congested and lessens the legroom for an average 6 ft person.

2018 Mercedes-Benz C 300 Coupe Competition

Lexus RC300 Vs C 300 coupe

Lexus RC300 is a promising mid-range coupe but it still has a long to go before competing with the 2018 C300. Despite using a similar sized engine, it poses disappointing performance figures in power, acceleration, and torque as compared to the Benz. Lexus RC300 is about $5000 cheaper than the Benz but it starts making sense when we look at the latter's exterior aesthetics and interior details. For now, C300 surely looks like a better choice than RC 300.

BMW 430i Vs C 300 coupe

The BMW 430i is powered by a 2-liter 4 cylinder engine which produces the best in class power and torque. It also has a better infotainment system than the Mercedes-Benz's and one-ups C300 in terms of driving experience as C300 isn't as responsive as 430i. But Mercedes beats BMW with its plush and luxurious interior and better aesthetics. However, the styling can cost you at least $2000 more than the Bimmer.

Kia Stinger Vs C 300 coupe

The Kia Stinger comes with a powerful engine, sleek styling, and immersive infotainment system but it fails to pose a threat to the more premium, luxurious and stylish C300 due to its rough ride quality due to stiffer suspensions. Noticeably, the Stinger has shorter gear-ratios which makes it a little eager to upshift and toughens drivability while Benz's 9-speed automatic transmission is fine-tuned to perfection and offers spot-on shifting conditions. Based on preferences, the Stinger proves to be a strong competitor of the C300 in the entry-level segment.

2018 Mercedes-Benz C 300 Coupe Final Verdict

The Mercedes-Benz C300 is a stylish car which isn't meant for driving enthusiasts due to its relaxed power and average handling. The Coupe is comfortable and luxurious for 2 adults but we'd rather suggest the C-class sedan if you are looking for a family car with ample cargo space. So, if you're looking for a handsome hunk for a daily commute, Mercedes C300 is custom tailored to your needs.
