For those who wish to enter the world of premium sedans and are wishing to own a Mercedes-Benz, the CLA-Class might just make sense. Based on the A-Class sedan’s platform, the CLA offers to be a stylish, uber-cool, and quite a practical car for an entry-level Mercedes-Benz. The new Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 might not be technically an entry-level sedan as it is positioned above the A-Class sedans, but it does seem to share a lot of components with the latter. It promises a lot for the discerning buyer and is offered at an affordable price.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 CLA 250 doesn’t have many changes compared to the 2021 model year apart from a few tweaks to the infotainment system. Prices for the Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 start at $39,000 for the FWD version and go up to $41,000 for the 4Matic version. This makes it a great entry point to the Mercedes-Benz brand which still remains a big step for many automotive enthusiasts. It competes with the Audi A3, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe and the Lexus IS 300. Let us see how it fares in its competition.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 is available in only a single trim level option, but it does come with two drive train options to choose from. The base version is an FWD one and the CLA was one of the first models of Mercedes-Benz to ever come with an FWD drivetrain unit in the US. The 4Matic version on the other hand costs a couple of thousand dollars extra to purchase. The CLA 250 gets some of the best interior features and creature comforts along with a really impressive infotainment system. Some of these features are explained in the table below.

CLA 250

Key Features

7-inch dual screens (infotainment & driver's display)

18-inch alloy wheels

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

8-speaker sound system

Dual-zone automatic climate control

12-way power front MB-Tex leatherette seats

Which trim should you buy?

If you wish to use the CLA 250 as a daily driver to go around the city, the FWD version should be more than adequate as it offers a very good driving experience with a light and nimble steering feel and a good amount of torque supplied to the front wheels. But if you wish to have an engaging drive and focus more on the excitement in driving rather than just commuting, then the 4Matic version might be the right choice for you. It gives you a ton of equipment that is built to classic Mercedes-Benz quality.

2022 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 Release date

Mercedes-Benz has already launched the 2022 CLA-Class lineup but due to the pandemic restrictions, the deliveries have been pushed further ahead. As part of official releases so far, we expect that this date might be around early 2022. There have been no confirmations from the brand regarding the same but we do expect the cars to be available very soon. Press cars and showroom cars have been dispatched and the testing has been done. We can expect customer cars to come real soon.

Engine and Performance

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 coupe gets a tiny yet powerful and exciting 2.0 L turbocharged inline-4 engine that produces 221 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. of torque. The engine feels refined, smooth and has all of its torque output down low in the rev range which means that you won’t come across any lag in power when driving around in the city traffic. The engine performs incredibly on the highway too as it doesn’t seem to be stressed when you push the throttle hard at times when you try to overtake.

The transmission unit is a 7-speed automatic transmission unit that is crisp and swift with the gear changes and always has the right gear available right when you need it. The CLA 250 is available in both FWD and a 4Matic AWD drivetrain option. It accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds and can cover a quarter-mile distance from a standstill in 14.2 seconds. It has a top speed of 160 mph. It is not the most powerful car around but feels very nice to drive.

The Audi A3 will be getting a major overhaul for the 2023 model year version and the new hybrid powertrain unit might not be as powerful as the CLA 250’s engine, but with the help of electric assist and the Quattro drivetrain system, it would deliver similar performance figures. The BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe and the Lexus IS 300 too have similar power and torque output as that of the CLA 250, but being on the heavier side, they seem to be slower. Overall, in terms of performance, the CLA is ahead.

Fuel Economy

The Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 seems to offer some of the best fuel economy figures in the segment with its combined fuel economy being 29 miles per gallon. It offers 25 MPG and 35 MPG in the city and highway driving conditions respectively and has a tank capacity of 13.5 gallons which helps it offer a 391.5 mile combined range figure. The tank capacity seems adequate for a car of its category, but it would have been better if it had some more volume. The range figures are not exactly class-leading even though it could easily set the benchmarks in class.

The Audi A3 has the best fuel efficiency figures that we can see. The CLA 250 seems to offer you one of the best range figures in the segment but the Lexus offers more range as it has a larger fuel tank capacity compared to the CLA 250. The Lexus IS 300 despite the lower fuel economy figures seems to compensate in terms of the overall range. The BMW also has very decent numbers. We feel that the Audi should have the best range figures but in the absence of data, it is hard to conclude so.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 arguably has some of the best interior designs and features on offer. The interior is similar to that of the A-Class sedan and it is quite evident once you see the design elements inside the interior. The dashboard looks sharp and futuristic and has the largest infotainment and driver’s display at the top. The dashboard comes with just a single black color leatherette upholstery as standard and the ambient lighting on the dashboard and throughout the interior give the CLA 250’s interior a futuristic and exciting aesthetic appeal.

The front seats are heated 12-way power-adjustable seats with power lumbar control as well. The seats get an MB-Tex leatherette upholstery that is both comfortable and stylish to look at. The seats offer a good amount of comfort and confidence and hold you in place when you go through corners. Features like the dual-zone automatic climate control with voice activation, sunroof, and ambient lighting add a lot of aesthetic appeal and comfort to the interior. The steering wheel too gets a heating function. The trunk capacity is decent with 11.6 cubic feet of volume.

Rear Row (Headroom/Shoulder Room/Leg Room, in inches)

Trunk Capacity (cubic feet)

The BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe, despite its smaller wheelbase compared to the CLA 250, manages to offer more legroom, headroom, and cargo space. Being small sedans, it’s a common thing that all these cars don’t have a large second-row space on offer, but the CLA 250 feels too cramped in the rear when compared to the rest of the cars in its class. It also loses a lot of headroom due to its sloping roof. Some of the standout interior features include:

  • A dual-zone voice-activated automatic climate control unit
  • Heated 12-way power-adjustable front seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • MB-Tex leatherette upholstery throughout the interior
  • Ambient lighting throughout the interior
  • Aluminum, piano black, and wood trim insert options

What’s there to keep you entertained?

Mercedes-Benz has always ensured that its products come with the best infotainment systems in the segment and the CLA 250 is no exception. It gets the latest and updated MBUX infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display unit that can be upgraded to a 10.25-inch screen if you wish. The driver’s display is a 7-inch display unit. A wireless charging pad is added to the CLA 250’s catalog as a new addition for 2022.

The CLA 250 gets an 8 speaker audio system as standard but you do have the option to avail yourself of a Burmester surround sound system with 12 speakers by shelling out some extra cash. The car gets connectivity features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity, and 4G Internet access WiFi hotspot as standard. Some of the standout infotainment features are:

  • In-built navigation
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • Latest MBUX infotainment system
  • A 7-inch infotainment display unit
  • 7-inch driver’s display unit
  • 8 speaker audio system
  • Optional 12 speaker Burmester surround sound system
  • Bluetooth phone connectivity
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 4G internet access WiFi hotspot
  • Wireless charging pad

The Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class got a major update in 2020 and as a result, the exterior design now resembles the modern and futuristic design approach of Mercedes-Benz with the sharp daytime running lights, large grille, sloping roofline, and a sharp and appealing rear fascia. It gets 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels as standard and the sloping roofline gives the 2022 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 a recognizable look which makes Mercedes-Benz call it a ‘Coupe’ sedan. You can also avail a set of 18-inch AMG Twin 5-spoke wheels as optional extras.

The only major drawback on the CLA 250’s side seems to be the fact that despite having a larger wheelbase and length compared to the BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe, it isn’t able to provide more room in the second row. However, the lines on the outside along with the bold and sharp front fascia do give the CLA 250 a young and charming look which strikes a chord with a lot of potential young customers. The Lexus is the heaviest car in this category but it is also a larger car in most respects. Some of the standard exterior features are:

  • 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels
  • 18-inch AMG twin 5-spoke wheels
  • Auto on/off LED projector headlamps
  • LED tail lamps
  • LED Daytime Running Lights
  • Exterior entry lights
  • Dual exhaust chrome tips

There isn't any data available on the safety ratings from the NHTSA and other similar agencies regarding the Mercedes-Benz CLA 250. But we can surely count on Mercedes-Benz’s engineering practices and their ambition to produce the best products for their customers and hence the CLA 250 definitely will be on the top of the list of safest cars in its segment. To further aid the safety attribute, Mercedes-Benz does offer some really good safety features such as Blind-Spot Assist, Active Brake Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Front Collision Mitigation, Driver Monitoring System, and so on. These features ensure the safety of the car actively when on the move and do seem to be lifesavers in various incidents. Some of the notable safety features include:

  • Low Tire Pressure Warning
  • Side Impact beams
  • Front Collision Mitigation
  • Blind-spot Assist
  • Active Brake Assist
  • Autonomous Emergency Braking
  • Driver Monitoring System
  • Backup Camera

2022 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 vs. 2022 Audi A3

As far as the 2022 Audi A3 goes, there isn’t any info available when it comes to its range, exterior dimensions, interior features, and space. The CLA 250 does seem to offer a more powerful engine unit compared to that of the A3’s but the Audi A3 certainly offers better fuel economy. Pricewise, the Mercedes-Benz may seem costlier than the Audi A3, but the CLA 250 is worth every penny you spend on it. The A3 has aged a bit even though it has done so gracefully. 2022 seems to be the wrong year if you want to get the Audi because it will receive major updates soon.

2022 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 vs. 2022 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe

The BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe definitely is the toughest rival to the CLA 250 on so many levels. It offers more interior space and cargo volume compared to the CLA 250 and is also cheaper than the CLA 250. But the CLA 250’s design - whether it be the exterior or the interior feels much more special and premium when compared to the BMW and this quality of it seems to appeal to a lot of potential customers. The 2-Series Gran Coupe is also a slightly duller car in terms of driving dynamics whereas the Mercedes is a lot of fun.

2022 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 vs. 2022 Lexus IS 300

The Lexus IS 300 is definitely a charmer when it comes to looks and gives the Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 a run for its money with its looks and features. The IS 300 costs comparatively more than the CLA 250 and has more of everything to offer whether it's the features, space, or fuel range. But when it comes to the driving experience, the CLA 250 feels a lot livelier and has a sporty feel to it. The IS is also waiting for a model update and hence we reckon it will return more competitively soon.

Final Verdict

The new Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 might be costlier than most of its rivals in the segment, but it certainly proves to be worth the money being spent on it. Apart from the cramped second-row space inside the CLA 250, there seem to be no drawbacks that make it less worthy of your interest in purchasing it. It sure is a stylish car and compared to the rest of the cars in the segment, has a lot more on offer when it comes to looks, features, driving dynamics, and performance. Being a relatively new and updated model, it also brings a lot of exciting technology. The most impressive thing is that the brand has kept up the same quality its pricier offerings have even on the entry-level model. We would definitely recommend buying it.
