E Class has always been one of those over-engineered pieces from the house of Mercedes. Although it bleeds tech it doesn't fail to integrate it with a first-class luxury experience. The battle for best in-car tech and comfort is on and Mercedes have a legitimate contender in the E Class. But in the world of wagons, the E Class sits right up at the highest temple on the hill. Considering its big price tag, it stays above the competition.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

In a time when wagons are disappearing to be replaced by bulky crossovers. The E Class wagon is one of the best wagons that money can get you right now. Priced at $64,200, the E450 sits just below the AMG E63S. It has a 3.0L V6 Bi-turbo engine developing 362 horses and 369-pound-feet of torque. All that power is channeled via a 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission. Not only this, but it also comes loaded with exhaustive luxury and safety equipment. The huge array of options will get you closer to the perfect version of your wagon.

Mercedes E450 is only available in one trim that is priced at $64,200. It is powered by a 3.0L V6 bi-turbo engine that delivers 362 horsepower and with increased turbo boost, 369-pound-feet of torque on tap.

We Recommend

If engine, performance, looks and cabin space matter the most to you, then the Mercedes delivers much more and it features a lot more than that of the rivalries and it will definitely be the best pick for you at a little higher cost than the others.

Engine and Performance

Quick, smooth, and all-weather capable, the E-class wagon sports a gutsy V-6, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive as standard equipment. A hearty burble under heavy throttle is the only audible clue to its performance potential, and its acceleration in our testing was swift. -CarandDriver

2020 Mercedes Benz E450 is powered by 3.0L Biturbo V6 engine making 362 horses and 369-pound-feet of torque. It is mated to the class-leading 9G-TRONIC transmission that gives it excellent performance and increased fuel efficiency. Power can be channeled to all four wheels via the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system.

Compared to the last year's E400 wagon, the E 450 has a more powerful V6 engine that increases total power by 33 horsepower. The 9-speed automatic system has more gear ratios, so the transmission will shifting gears more often to keep the engine in its power band. Lighter components have been used to ensure quiet shifting work.

3.0L V6 Twin Turbo Engine is exclusively designed to lower emission and enhance the fuel efficiency of the wagon. The ECO Start/Stop System helps you to save fuel by switching off the engine at traffic lights and other idle situations. The engine ignites and comes into action instantly when the driver releases the brake.

The E Class wagon is built to cocoon you in the oasis of comfort and luxury. But the E 450 has remarkable pulling power. This turbocharged engine can put many engines with more cylinders to shame. The E Class wagon that comes mated to this engine can thrash 0-60 mile marker in sub 5-second window. But the E Class is not limited to being a fuel sipping beast of a wagon.

The engine has enough gusto for your merging, passing, highway cruising and spirited driving. The E 450 is available with 4MATIC, all-wheel drive system. It ensures better traction in a variety of bad terrain scenarios. The 4MATIC all-wheel drive is integrated with the Electronic Stability Program for an intelligent torque distribution in corners and slippery surfaces.

The E Class has its priorities set right. The engine has some pretty solid performance but it is a cruiser first. As you put the foot down, you wont find a sense of urgency. The motor was engineered to aid in effortless cruising ability and to pass laggards in the right lane. If your intentions are to chase exotic sport cars then the AMG E63 wagon would be a better choice. Still, the E Class wagon can outrun other wagons in this competition with hits 5.1-sec 0-60 mph time.

Ride and Handling

Most of the people buy the E Class because they want to reach their destination as comfortably as possible. The suspension is pretty good at tackling road undulations and the cabin ambiance is super quiet. With Eco, Sport, Sport+ and Individual drive modes ensure that your E 450 wagon adapts to your moods. The drive modes alter throttle response, suspension firmness and transmission response.

E450 4MATIC Wagon features a self-leveling rear air suspension that is built especially to balance the ride height, thereby ensuring smooth driving quality and handling of the wagon. This balances the height of the vehicle and comfort level of the ride according to the variation in passenger weight and cargo.

The E 450 is equally relaxing in town as on the highway. The 9G-TRONIC gearbox is slick and provides for quick gear changes when overtaking is required and wafts along when you just feel like cruising on the endless roads.

Mercedes Benz E450 wagon is equipped with 14.2-inch ventilated front and rear discs. E450 weighs in at 4,189 pounds. Data from the braking test is unavailable for E450. However, the pedal feel is firm. The application of brakes is followed by progressive slowing of the car. The brakes will not let you down and stop the car within the safety margins.

The E Class wagon is available with Active Brake Assist System which alerts the occupants whenever there is any vehicle or a stationary object is approaching and the computer detects a possibility of collision.

As soon as the drive starts to apply the brake, it provides an appropriate amount of braking to avoid a collision and even if the driver fails to brake, it autonomously initiates required amount of brake and brings the vehicle to a halt.

Fuel Economy

With the 9-speed transmission working tirelessly to ensure optimum gear shifts and turbocharged and fuel injected V6 engine, the E450 manages 19 MPG in the city, 25 MPG on the highway and combined mpg of 21.The generous 21 gallon tank will offer good cruising range.

The competitors run more frugally. The likes of Audi and Volvo easily better Mercedes with their combined mpg numbers. Audi scores the best of the lot, 30 mpg of combined mileage.

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class artfully intertwines quality materials, an elegant design, and cutting-edge technology. The result is a sophisticated, lavish interior. The seats are among the most comfortable in the class, and a lengthy list of features includes some truly high-end options. The trunk, though intelligently designed, is small.- Cars.USnews

Seating and Comfort

The inside is pleasing to the eye. The E450 is super spacious. Its supportive front seats come with electrical adjustment and memory setting to remember your favorite seating position. The E Class wagon heavily borrows from the flagship S Class. The sweeping digital dashboard is a treat to look at. Mercedes E Class blends technology with class better than other marquees.

In a time when cars are adopting tech at an exponential rate. Even A-B commuters are equipped with state of the art smartphone integration. Luxuries like heated and ventilated seats are available as standard options for many budget cars. What about the cars that defined luxury? The Mercedes E Class brings in luxury that was pretty much unheard of.

E 450 4MATIC wagon comes with a third-row seating that increases the seating capacity of the wagon to 7. The third-row seats are foldable as well as rear facing and they emerge at the cargo floor to accommodate two people. The second-row seats are 40/20/40 split foldable and they are available in a variety of configurations that offer more cargo space at the rear of the wagon.

The biggest advantage that the E Class wagon has its capability for accommodating 7 people. Not many wagons can do that while taking care of performance and luxury in a way Mercedes does.

Infotainment System

The main attraction is a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster which is placed adjacent to the central screen of the same size. The Merc also offers a 4G LTE in-car Wi-Fi system, rear-seat entertainment package and wireless phone-charging. To work the touchpad a bit of skill is needed but when you drive it daily, it gets to you and you feel very connected.

It supports Bluetooth Audio Streaming, Apple Carplay, and Android Auto.

The standard satellite navigation system is good but not like AMG models as they get enhanced features. The shortcut buttons to use the beautiful infotainment are placed in the natural hand-resting position when driving the car.

Cargo volume

E450's boot space can swallow 57.4 cu-ft. of luggage. There is enough space to move apartments. Other than looking handsome due to the long roof-body design. The E 450 wagon also offers ample cargo space. With that much amount of space, it is hard to deny the fact that station wagons are as much practical as the crossover SUV.

Dimensions and Weight

All of the updates made to the 2020 Mercedes-Benz E450 Wagon took place either under the hood or inside the cabin, so the exterior styling carries over unchanged. Our previous E400 Wagon had a more sinister look pairing the Selenite Gray Metallic paint with blacked-out trim courtesy of the Night Package, but this car looked more of the luxury part with its Cardinal Red Metallic paint and more bright trim including the chrome window molding, door mirrors, door handles and roof rack. Of course, the AMG body styling ($500) adds a sportier presence with the five-spoke wheels and AMG grille.- Autonation

The E Class carries that understated nature of high-end German cars very well. The design follows subtle lines and if you are looking for something that has massive street massive, then your money is better spent elsewhere. Although, the design has been around for a while now. It doesnt show any signs of aging. Most E Class buyers actually appreciate this understated opulence.

The wagon also features a sliding panoramic sunroof that slides open at the touch of a button and lets in the breeze and sunlight for ventilation. It also includes a sun-slide that restricts sunlight from making the cabin too bright.

Mercedes Benz E 450 is 194.2 inches in length and 72.9 inches in width. Wheelbase is 115.7 inches which provides for ample amount of space and comfort for the passengers.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon vs Audi A4 Allroad

The Audi A4 Allroad does not offer the host of features that Mercedes E Class Wagon offers. The Allroad offers more utility with better interior space for tall passengers. It is priced lesser than that of Mercedes Benz E450. When it comes to brute performance, the E Class wagon does a better job. If you want to have more fun behind the wheel then the E 450 wagon comes off as a better choice.

Mercedes Benz E-Class Wagon vs Volvo V90

The Volvo V90 is a wagon that serves as a premier luxury option for those who dont want to buy a fire breathing 6-cylinder wagon. Compared to other wagons, the V90 doesn't offer as much cargo space but it takes care of its occupants by offering class-leading comfort. The seats are magnificent and the interior feels airy. The main attractions of Volvo V90 are its state-of-the-art systems: a semi autonomous drive mode and a snappy infotainment system. But when it comes to driving manners, the V90 might disappoint you a bit. The V90 is better known for its hushed manners, so dont expect some great action as you pin the throttle to the floor.

Final Verdict

The E Class wagon features an improved powertrain which churns out 33 horsepower more. The engine isnt eager to pick up pace but it remarkably quiet. Mercedes intends the E Class to be a comfortable before being anything else. The cabin is well insulated, once inside it really feels like you have been separated from the outside world. The premium wagon starts at a price tag of $64,200.

The E Class wagon offers best in class engine specifications, sculpted looks, interior fitment, space and a high tech arsenal of safety features. When it comes to pricing, though it is costly, the features embedded are worth the value.
