Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

At the same time, they also made an investment in Tesla way before we could see it come out in the open. Mercedes-Benz came forth with its first dedicated EV in the month of April this year. And the EQS is certainly going to be out in 2022. In fact, it will be out for sale in the US this fall itself. So, hold your horses and let the giant automaker make their way.

Features

While there is little official information out as to the details of how the Mercedes-Benz EQS will be sold, we can confirm the availability of two variants - EQS 450+ and EQS 580 4MATIC. The trims are differentiated by drivetrains, with the latter offering all-wheel-drive in the form of their 4MATIC system. Both trims are incredibly futuristic inside-out.

The EQS is an exciting prospect for anyone who loves luxury, and the folks Mercedes-Benz are excellent at appeasing all your desires. Both variants of the EQS are fancier than anything you have seen before, offering all kinds of creature comforts that you’d expect from a Benz. While it is too early to make a fully-informed decision between the two trims, the fanatic in you must incline towards the EQS 580 4MATIC, only because of the space-age dashboard which doubles as a 56” wide touchscreen.

Engine and Performance

8.0/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS will be featuring rear-wheel-drive 450+ and 580 4Matic variants at its onset. The vehicle comes equipped with synchronous electric motors, amongst which the rear motors in the 450+ will produce 329 horses and 406 lb-ft of torque. The EQS 580 will have two motors, generating 516 horses and 611 lb-ft., as the car will send power to all four wheels. The 450+ variant will likely hit 0-60 mph within 5.5 seconds and the 580 in 4.1 seconds.

The EQS comes with a 107.8-kWh battery that is compatible with 200 kW DC charging. You can recharge the battery from 10-80 percent within 31 minutes. Of course, we can speculate Mercedes to come out with even better performance versions of the EQS in the future. Perhaps there could be AMG versions.

Lucid Air is, perhaps, the finest in terms of performance figures. It is powerful and fast even with its base variant. Mercedes went for a more decent approach with its new EV and given performance numbers are good enough to scoot with a pretty much okayish acceleration. However, Mercedes offers an alternative -580 4Matic. Besides, both Tesla Model S and Porsche Taycan have many powerful powertrain options such as Plaid and Turbo S.

How does the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS handle?

How do you think the EQS would handle if it is riding on rolls on rims sized between 19 and 21 inches and adaptive air suspension? The rear wheels can be angled at 4.5 degrees, thanks to the standard rear-axle steering system. And if you add up the optional upgrade, you can also angle them at 10 degrees.

The technology at hand allows the EQS to maneuver rightly in difficult spots and also maintains the equilibrium at high speeds. The 205.4-inch-long EQS exhibits a silky-smooth ride quality and a quiet cabin. However, these are only speculations that need to be confirmed once you get behind those wheels

Fuel Economy

8.5/10

The 2022 EQS comes equipped with a 107.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Although we don’t have numbers to quote for the Sedan’s EPA-rated driving range, we can certainly assume based on Mercedes’ estimates that it is going to be good for 478 miles as per the European WLTP test cycle. Contrary to that, the US EPA believes that the number would be around 335 miles only.

If you talk conservative; well, the numbers could be anywhere near or exceeding 399 miles of range. Using a 240-volt Level 2 charger, you can charge the battery to 100 percent even from a 10 percent approx within 11 hours 15 minutes. And if you use the DC fast charger, then the EQS may get most of its battery within 35 minutes, probably from 10 to 80%. As per the WLTP standard, the 450+ can be pecked up with 186 miles of range within 15 minutes.

Though EPA is yet to certify the eMPG score for the EQS, Mercedes claims that it can cruise for almost 478 miles on a single fully charged battery. That is quite impressive because it will make the 2022 EQS the second-best economical electric vehicle on the roster, even beating Tesla Model S.

Interior

8.5/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS is not your regular car; it belongs to some other fraternity. The interior speaks of its unique aspects all over. The first thing you notice as you enter the car is the full-width dashboard screen mounted with the MBUX hyper screen that is almost 56 inches wide. It integrates a 12.3-inch driver display, a 12.3-inch display in front of the front passenger, and a 17.7-inch central display. With the 580 variant, the hyper screen comes as a standard. However, with EQS 450+, the 12.8-inch OLED portrait display is standard in the middle of the dashboard.

With the EQS, the list of optional features is not at all limiting; in fact, it’s quite a lot. Among all other items that you can find in the cabin, you can count upon leather upholstery, active ambient lighting, and a panoramic sunroof. For full support and relaxation, you also get a Power Nap function to recline the seat, get a peaceful atmosphere inside, and even close the roof sunshade above. You can also upgrade the dual-zone climate control feature to four-zone automatic climate control. So, all in all, what you get is a wonderful new Mercedes packed with tech and luxury all at once.

As the interior dimensions have not been revealed yet, be assured that the EQS would be as comfortable as the flagship S-Class Sedan, rather it will be more plushy. And considering its competition lies with the leading cars of the segment, Mercedes-Benz won’t be making any compromise with its interior amenities and will definitely provide utmost comfort with advanced features. And here are some standout interior features to look forward to in the 2022 EQS:

  • Panoramic Sunroof
  • Heated Leather Seats
  • Active Ambient Lighting
  • Power Nap function
  • Four-zone Climate Control
  • Multicontour Front and Back Seats with Massage Functions

2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS: Infotainment And Connectivity

When it comes to infotainment, we pretty much know that the 2022 EQS is killing it. It’s the same as the new S-Class infotainment system, and it also comes as standard. There’s a 12-inch driver’s display, a 13-inch portrait touchscreen, and if you’re ready to fork out a bit more, then the new hyper screen infotainment system is also yours. So, embracing all, there are three in-built screens. One for the driver, one in the middle, and one for the front-seat passenger. Besides this, the infotainment system has Mercedes’ latest features such as satellite navigation, smartphone mirroring, and an upgraded “Hey Mercedes” feature, which can understand over 27 languages along with recalling your sound patterns.

Something more? Well, another great feature to acknowledge is the face-recognition system that understands the driver and load-in their personal settings on its own. This feature also detects if you are trying to look behind or peep in the passenger’s display. When it does know that you’re peeping, it would automatically dim the display to pull you out of the distraction. With the passenger's display, you can also get the 12-inch screens in the back similar to how you’d get them with S-Class. Here are some notable infotainment features of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS:

  • MBUX Hyperscreen
  • 17.7-inch Central Touchscreen Display
  • 12.3-inch Passenger Display
  • An augmented Reality Navigation system
  • Burmester 3D Sound System
  • Voice Command

Exterior

3.0/10

Since it’s a new addition to the Mercedes-Benz lineup, we’d say that the EQS looks entirely different from the other cars that Mercedes has on display. It doesn’t have a flat bonnet or a rounded roofline similar to the S-Class. In fact, the entire structure or exterior of the car is a curvy one, especially across the sides. Even the pop-out door handles help it to be even more curvaceous. The EQS does not have a big chrome grille as Mercedes cars usually have. Against that, it has a blanked-off trim piece similar to its counterparts EQA or the EQC electric cars.

The intakes within the front bumper as well as the full-width daytime running light look similar to the counterparts, even the same as the S-Class. The backlights are stretched at the maximum, just like it’s done on the Audi e-Tron GT or the Porsche Taycan. Standard 19-inch wheels are available with the EQS. If paid extra, these can be upgraded to 22 inches. And you can get a two-tone paint done too; it’s an option if you want the EQS to look distinct.

The 2022 EQS is the lengthiest and tallest in the group with the help of which it has a more dominating on-road presence than any of its rivals in the group. However, the Lucid Air and Tesla Model S resemble a more futuristic and stylish exterior look than both EQS and Taycan. Standout Exterior Features include:

  • Rear-axle steering up to 4.5-degrees, optional 10-degrees
  • Air Suspension with Adaptive Damping System
  • 22-inch Alloy Wheels
  • Two-tone Exterior Paint

Safety

4.0/10

There isn’t any information out as to the safety features offered in the EQS, but considering the luxury sedan makes use of the first EV-focused platform from the Mercedes-Benz lineup, you can expect plenty of thought being put into the safety features on offer.

Judging by the EQC and its performance in safety and crash tests, the EQS should do well. Moreover, it is obvious that the electric sedan will be offered with Mercedes-Benz’ driver assistance programs, which include:

  • Automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection for front collision avoidance
  • Blind-spot monitoring and Collision Avoidance
  • Lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist

Final Verdict

Yes it would totally be worth every penny you spend on it, but make sure you have enough pennies to spend because the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS is not coming to you easily. The car has a unique structure, a futuristically serene interior, and a power-packed electric motor(s). It’s not quite different from the S-Class and yet stands out pretty well. It’s more of a traditional flagship sedan if you think it through.
