Detailed Review

The crossovers are creeping up in every segment of the automobile kingdom. The 2018 Mercedes Benz GLA 250 competes in the hotly contested luxury subcompact SUV segment. And with a starting price of $33,400, it’s the most affordable SUV you can buy from this iconic German marque sitting just below the Mercedes GLC SUV.

But don’t let the word “affordable” fool you. This tiny Mercedes SUV packs a silky smooth and effortless 208 hp 2.0L turbocharged Inline-4, a blindingly quick 7-Speed Dual Clutch Automatic and a lithe chassis that will pinch you to attack that corner. The diminutive dimensions make it friendly to punt around in the town and the interior is as luxuriously appointed as any other car from Mercedes-Benz.

However, that diminutive dimension also translates to a tight interior and limited cargo space. Also, this tiny Mercedes can get scarily expensive if you are not careful with the options sheets. Competitors include the more spacious BMW X1, the more frugal Infinity QX30, and the underwhelming Audi Q3.

2018 Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 Engine

4.8/10

The GLA's tidy size makes it a friend in cities and urban environments, where its easy-to-park manners and maneuverability help it slither through congestion. It's in traffic and in-town driving where you'll notice its start/stop feature, which cuts engine power at idle. Restarts aren't too jarring, but noticeable all the same. –Kelley Blue Book

Engine and transmission

The GLA 250 gets a 2.0L Turbocharged Inline-4 developing 208 hp power and 258 pounds-feet of torque. Its engine is mated to a smooth and quick 7-Speed Dual Clutch Automatic which develops sufficient power for freeway cruising but if you desire breath sucking acceleration, you won’t get that here; for that, consider the GLA 45 AMG. However, you do get an optional 4Matic All-Wheel Drive system.

2018 Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 Interior

4.8/10

A tight rear seat, a small rear window, and un-Mercedes-like touches plague the GLA250’s interior. But its design is adventurous, and its controls are easy to reach and use. -aranddriver

The 2018 Mercedes GLA sits higher and sports a taller hatchback body than the related CLA sedan. It’s closer in proportion—but not in details—to the Infiniti QX30. It’s businesslike and a bit stubby in a way that works. –thecarconnection

2018 Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 Competition

Audi Q3 Premium Vs Mercedes GLA 250

The Audi is around $500 cheaper than the Mercedes. But the price difference here really doesn’t matter a lot because for those $500, which you spend extra while buying a Mercedes gives you a car which offers more power and a well-appointed interior. So, if the price point is not a concern for you, go for the Mercedes.

Infiniti QX30 Vs Mercedes GLA 250

The Infiniti is cheaper than the Mercedes by around $4000, which is the most crucial point to consider because, at this price point, it offers the same number of features as that of the Mercedes. It has better performance with quicker 0-60 mph and quarter mile time. So, this makes the Infiniti a suitable alternative over the Mercedes. So, if you are not a Mercedes fan, the infinity QX30 is the right car for you.

BMW X1 Vs Mercedes GLA 250

The BMW X1 is costly by around $500 compared to the Mercedes. It gets the most powerful engine among all its rivals and is also the biggest of all rivals in terms of size. So, if you are willing to spend $500 more than the price point of Mercedes. The BMW has the right cards for you.

2018 Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 Final Verdict

Mercedes may call the GLA an SUV but in reality, it’s a bigger, jacked-up hatchback. Once you ignore this, you get a light compact car to putter around in the town with ample power in reserve. And since it’s a Mercedes, you also get plenty of interior appointments, a refined powertrain, and a hushed interior. However, if the lack of space concerns you, it’s worth looking at the slightly larger BMW X1.
