2019 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class Engine

"Based on a platform used to build small cars for Europe, the GLA combines performance and Mercedes luxury at the price of an average family sedan. … But a new 'budget Benz' isn't without compromise. The GLA rides rougher than a traditional Mercedes, and there's a general dearth of headroom, legroom and cargo space. The GLA 250's transmission also isn't very smooth and responds slowly to requests for more power. A high price relative to the GLA's competitors doesn't help either. Similar BMW and Audi models, while not much roomier, offer more refinement for the same price or less." - Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

The 2019 GLA250 is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Those are good numbers on papers but the on-road performance doesn’t reflect that with a visible lag in spooling of turbochargers. The GLA 45 AMG uses the same engine which is tuned to dole out 375 hp.

The 7G-DCT transmission offers the smooth refinement of an automatic with sporty reflexes. Its dual-clutch design shifts faster than a human can. While its shift paddles let you take charge of its seven speeds anytime. Furthermore, the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission can hesitate to find the right gear, resulting in acceleration that is less smooth and steady than expected.

The Volvo XC40 produces the highest amount of horses while the Lexus makes the lowest. The Jaguar E pace and Volvo are somewhat similar in terms of power output but the E pace cost some $5000 more.

Acceleration

The GLA250 with its turbocharged engine and brisk 7-speed automatic transmission can reach to 60 mph in just 7.1 seconds while the car is in sports mode. With the all-wheel drive, which Mercedes-Benz calls as 4matic, the GLA sprints to 60 mph much faster. It has the ability to split torque evenly between the front and rear wheels when more traction is required.

Despite of huge difference in horsepower all of the rivals delivers similar acceleration while the Lexus comes at last with its timid engine.

Ride and Handling

The GLA class with its punchy 208-hp engine delivers a driving experience which is keen with exceptional handling. The steering is quick with firm suspension providing athletic performance on curvy roads. GLA sends most of its torque to the front wheels, with the ability to split things evenly between the front and rear when more traction is needed.

The crossover drives like a hatch; with precise handling taking corners enthusiastically. Similarly as with numerous sporty vehicles, the exchange-off for performance is harsh ride quality at times. The GLA's hardened suspension makes it ride harsh over uneven asphalt, and most knocks or stuns from the street are transmitted into the cabin.

The GLA's compact size makes it a companion in urban commutes, where it’s simple to maneuver and crawl through traffic. Anyone expecting a typical Mercedes-Benz ride might be disappointed.

Brakes

The Mercedes-Benz comes with pretty good braking performance which is above average in this segment. It comes to a sudden stop in just 103 feet which is tremendous. However, after repeated stops, the pedal response starts to fade a bit.

The GLA with its lowest curb weight among the rivals scores the smallest distance and exceptional braking performance.

2019 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class Fuel Economy

The base model GLA250 with front-wheel drive gets 24 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Opting for all-wheel drive drops those estimates to 23 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. The performance-oriented AMG GLA gets an estimated 22/28 mpg city/highway.

2019 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class Interior

6.5/10

"The compromises the GLA requires in usability and comfort may be too much for some-again, it's more of a tall hatchback than a real CUV-but Mercedes-Benz's littlest ute belongs on the shopping lists of luxury-minded buyers who value driving prowess over practicality." –car and driver

Seating and Comfort

The GLA’s 2-row/5-passenger cabin is pleasant with signature Mercedes styling. Elegant aero inspired design and big circular AC vents looks handsome with soft touch plastic on the dashboard. The infotainment screen has a tacked-on look rather than completely integrated in the dashboard. A small rotary knob on the center console controls the infotainment system which is intuitive.

As its small proportions would suggest, the front row is still roomy enough for two adults with comfortable and multi-adjustable seats. The back seat is cramped where legroom and headroom comes up short. In the event that the driver has long legs, a grown-up traveler behind will be confined. With shorter people in front row, the rearward sitting arrangement is fine for average size individual.

For those with small children, the interior space is not an issue, but if you’re expecting to take the GLA250 on a long trip with four adults, it will be a tight squeeze. The rear head- and legroom are the worst in the class, while Rivals like Volvo XC 40 and Range Rover Evoque are far better in terms of passenger comfort.

  • Aux input
  • Bluetooth phone

  • Real-Time Traffic
  • USB and Voice Command
  • SiriusXM Traffic and Weather service
  • Apple Carplay and Android Auto
  • Haraman Kardon sound system

Cargo Capacity

The GLA is much like a hatchback than a small SUV. It’s a generous 17.2 cubic feet of cargo room with the rear seats up and 43.6 cubic feet with them down. You can also opt for the hands-free access which open the lift gate with just a wave of your foot under the rear bumper. The trunk floor is somewhat high which can make loading heavy articles a bit difficult.

Dimension and Weight

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLA looks fresh with host of exterior revisions. This little crossover combines the looks of a hot hatch with a ride height of a SUV, which can be increased by an inch with the off-road package. The iconic three pointed grille is neatly housed between pronounced LED headlamps and stardust LED daytime running lights. . The GLA possesses familiar Mercedes styling cues, including a giant three-pointed star in the middle of its grille

2019 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class Competition

Volvo XC 40 Momentum

The Volvo XC40 sports a youthful design with charm packed in its crossover dimensions. The cabin is spacious and creates ambience which is found in in upscale Volvo’s. The XC 40 despite of its big size is surprisingly nimble that feels as at home on twisty roads as it does on long-distance highway cruises. The XC 40 beats the GLA in terms of acceleration and cabin space. The XC 40 is priced higher than the GLA but it is worth it.

Lexus UX 200

The UX is the latest entry into popular subcompact class. Like its German adversaries, the UX combines characters of a big car in to subcompact segment. It comes standard with several tech and features. The hybrid powertrain itself gives the UX an edge in this class since nobody else offers one, and we believe it's really the best UX to purchase. The UX is a good alternative to the Benz but overall performance is better in the GLA.

Jaguar E Pace

The Jaguar E pace comes with 2.0 liter inline 4 which makes 246 hp while R-dynamic variant comes with a tuned 296 hp powertrain. Both of the engines are mated to a 9 speed automatic transmission and 4 wheel drive is standard. The overall performance is better in the Jaguar and it also beats the GLA in terms of interior space.

2019 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class Final Verdict

The Mercedes-Benz is one of the most fun to drive crossover with utility and car like maueverbility. Its compact footprint and turbocharged engine makes it agile and adventurous. The GLA might lack in terms of interior space but makes up for it with a lavish cabin.
