2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class Engine

"The GLC is very impressive for an SUV. It stays reasonably flat through turns and doesn't feel very tall or large. It's easy to drive a fast clip down a twisty road"- Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

For a luxury compact SUV, having 241 hp of power and 273 lb.-ft. of torque is great. The coupe is backed by a 2.0L inline-4 turbocharged engine. Unlike its competitors, the GLC 300 flaunts to have a 9-speed automatic transmission mode. BMW X3, Audi Q5, and Lexus NX have 8-speed, 7-speed, and 6-speed automatic transmission modes, respectively. Like the GLC 300, all three of its competitors feature a 2.0L engine.

In terms of torque, Mercedes Benz GLC 300 ties with Audi Q5 at 273 lb.-ft. BMW X3 and Lexus NX also draw in terms of torque at 258 lb.-ft.

In terms of acceleration, GLC 300 is an average performer. It takes 6.3 seconds for the coupe to dash to 60 MPH from nothing. This is a split second slower than the Audi Q5 and the BMW X3. Lexus NX features the most sluggish acceleration in the league with 0-60 MPH time of 7.2 seconds. The Mercedes however, has the most CO2 emission value of 7.3.

The latest iteration of the Mercedes Benz GLC 300 takes 14 seconds to traverse a quarter-mile. The same is achieved by BMW X3 and Lexus NX in 14.1 and 14.8 seconds, respectively. Again, Audi Q5 takes the least time of 13.5 seconds in doing so.

Ride and Handling

There are two separate driving modes available with the 2018 GLC 300. There is a Normal mode and a Sport mode. The steering is responsive in the normal mode while the feel improves in the Sport mode, though some additional effort is required. Throughout turns, the ride stays firmly on the ground.

The engine stop-start system might act obtrusive at startup. Nonetheless, the adaptive cruise system assists in effectively controlling both, the gas and the brakes. Moreover, the 9-speed automatic transmission is way much smoother than other cars in the competition. All in all, the handling experience with the GLC 300 is even much better than expected.

The front brake available in the latest GLC 300 is 13.5 inches. It is bigger than the front brake employed in its competitors. The Lexus NX offers the smallest 11.7 inches of front brake. The rear brake is rated at 12.6 inches. The Q5 employes larger brakes to compensate the weight giving it an edge with 3 feet.

The GLC 300 is capable of stopping at a distance of 115 feet from 60 MPH. The BMW X3 takes much more distance than both of them. It travels about 127 feet before coming to a halt.

Towing is an important feature of any SUV. While Lexus NX allows a maximum towing capacity of 2000 lbs. only, GLC 300 offers 3500 lbs. However, this is less than that offered by the Audi Q5, 4400 lbs. BMW X3 wins the section with 4409 lbs. of towing capacity.

2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class Exterior

"Mercedes’ GLC-Class for 2018 is bigger than it looks, and that’s a good thing. Rather than appearing ponderous or unwieldy, it looks substantial and solid. Although the smooth curves and soft lines are a little less distinctive than Mercedes’ previous crisp-edge styling, this is much more attractive"- KBB

2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class Competition

Audi Q5 vs Mercedes Benz GLC 300

Pricing options for the Audi Q5 start from $41,500, $1450 more than that of the GLC 300. The coupe features a 2.0L TFSI Inline 4-cylinder engine. It is capable of delivering 252 hp of power and 273 lb.-ft. of torque. While the ride equals GLC 300 in terms of torque, it stays ahead in terms of power. The ride flaunts a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission mode.

The Audi Q5 offers the best 0-60 MPH time of 5.9 seconds in its league. It also covers a distance of quarter-mile in the least amount of time i.e. 13.5 seconds. However, it is about 160 lbs. heavier than that of the GLC 300 and has a shorter wheelbase of 111 inches. Considering that it's a better option.

BMW X3 vs Mercedes Benz GLC 300

The BMW X3 is backed by a 2.0L Twin Power Turbo Inline 4-cylinder engine. It delivers 248 hp of power and 258 lb.-ft. of torque to the luxury compact SUV. Unlike GLC 300, the ride supports an 8-speed automatic transmission mode. The bid for BMW X3 starts from $41,000, $950 more than that of the GLC 300.

It has superior 0-60 MPH acceleration, CO2 emission value and combined fuel economy to the GLC 300. However, it is beaten by a mere 0.1 seconds by GLC 300 in covering a quarter-mile. Also, it is bulkier than GLC 300 with a total curb weight of 4150 lbs. In fact, it is one of the bulkiest coupe in the league, however, you can settle for some extra pounds for some additional ponies.

Lexus NX vs Mercedes Benz GLC 300

With a power of 235 hp, Lexus NX finished last in the competition. The car is backed by a 2.0L Inline-4 turbo engine, capable of delivering 258 lb.-ft. of torque. However, it is the least expensive ride in the competition. Pricing options for the coupe start from $35,985. It features a 6-speed automatic transmission mode.

Except for a cheap price, the coupe flaunts 25 mpg of combined fuel economy and 6.9 inches of ground clearance. Other than that, there aren't that many things to appreciate about Lexus NX. It finishes last in most aspects. For instance, it has the slowest 0-60 MPH of 7.2 seconds. Likewise, it takes 14.8 seconds to cover a quarter-mile. Though its a decent car its deprived of power which knocks it out of the consideration list.

The 2018 Mercedes Benz GLC 300 is a competent luxury compact SUV. It features excellent interiors in addition to outstanding exterior feats. Moreover, there are a plethora of advanced features, ranging from fulfilling infotainment to security intents. Like any other Mercedes offering, the interiors are completely soundproof.

There are some aspects, where the ride needs to work upon. For example, the ground clearance and CO2 emission value. Other than that, almost everything is pleasingly appealing about the GLC 300.
