Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Apart from being capable, the 2022 Metris Passenger van also offers sophistication and a well-packed interior which is expected from a Mercedes-Benz vehicle. Its price starts at $36,840 and makes it one of the preferable picks in the segment. The 2022 Mercedes-Benz Metris passenger van offers stiff competition to the likes of Ford Transit Connect Wagon, RAM ProMaster City Wagon, and Chrysler Pacifica

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz Metris Passenger Van is available as a standalone trim level with lots of customizations. Moreover, the removable seats in the passenger van make it more versatile. Compared to other compact vans in the US, it gets much standard equipment such as a 7” touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, AEB, LTE, Crosswind Assist, and so on.

Many optional features such as automatic climate control, navigation, comfort air suspension, electric sliding doors, and power front seats prove to be a better value. 2022 Mercedes-Benz Metris Worker Passenger Van Release Date

The 2022 Metris Van has been revealed in the USA and the official website will soon be updated with new pricing and specifications. The sales are speculated to start by the end of the year.

Engine and Performance

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz Metris vans are equipped with a 2L Turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that churns out 208 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. The power is sent to the rear wheels via a 9-speed automatic transmission. With top-class towing and payload capacity, the Metris van outshines its rivals with ease. The vehicle can haul a maximum of 5000 pounds and a payload capacity of 2425 pounds, which is better than the rivals.

The powerful and torquey engine shows athletic performance in real life. Apart from being heavier, the vehicle sprints to 60 MPH from a standstill within 8.4 seconds. It completes the quarter-mile drag within 17.2 seconds, which is impressive in the class. In short, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz Metris Passenger Van is a luxury people hauler with immense capabilities to haul men and material around.

Metris vans generally hold a refined handling character, which is a serious cup of tea for this class. The steering is well-weighted and the vehicle remains well planted at low to medium speeds. It has a turning radius of 36.4 feet, which is far better than the Ford Transit. The optional air suspension system with adjustable ride height is a compelling feature you shouldn't miss out on. It absorbs all the undulations on the roads.

*Expected and 2021 data used for reference

The Chrysler Pacifica van is the most powerful and torquiest in the competition. The Ford Transit Connect comes equipped with a smaller engine capacity and produces feeble power and torque figures as it is naturally aspirated. The RAM ProMaster van is also not very powerful. The Metris passenger van has a powerful engine but still, it isn't enough to undercut the Pacifica. Moreover, Metris comes in standard RWD configuration while the other three come in standard FWD configuration.

Fuel Economy

Looking at the efficiency of the engine, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz Metris wouldn’t be a preferable choice. The EPA has rated the 2021 Metris Passenger Van and as per data, it offers 18 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on highways, totaling 19 mpg of combined mileage. Moreover, unlike other vans in the segment, the brand recommends the use of premium fuel in the Metris vans, which is costlier too. With an 18.5-gallon fuel tank, the vehicle offers an estimated range of 333 miles in the city and 407 miles on highways. The combined range stands at 352 miles.

*Expected and2021 data used for reference

The Ford Transit Connect gets the best fuel economy figures in the segment, making it a value for money buy. RAM ProMaster City wagon is slightly less efficient when compared to the Ford owing to its bigger and better engine. The Pacifica is more fuel-efficient than the Metris despite having a bigger engine. The Metris on the other hand comes with a large fuel tank which compensates for the feeble fuel economy when it comes to the overall driving range.

The 2022 Metris Passenger Van can seat up to 8 people while a capacity for seven is offered as standard. The utility-focused minimalistic interior design is decent enough for this class. It promises a quiet cabin in highway commutes, which many rivals fail to do. The second and third rows can be configured or even removed according to one’s wishes. The cabin is not as luxurious as a regular Mercedes-Benz car. The brand has traded a bit of vanity for more practicality. However, it offers a decent amount of room for all passengers with a little trade-off in terms of comfort and convenience.

Moreover, power sliding doors and power-adjustable front seats are optional, which would be a strong recommendation. Apart from that, you also get heated seats, automatic climate control via the optional packages. Metris is as luxurious as a van can get. On the flip side, the steering column is tiltable but cannot be telescopically adjusted. With a massive 38 cubic feet of cargo space, the vehicle is practical. When you remove the seats, you can get more cargo space.

*Expected and2021 data used for reference

The Pacifica and Metris are the only vans to come with 7 or 8 seater accommodation. Ford Transit comes with three rows but can only seat 6 people. Moreover, it has dismal cargo space. The RAM ProMaster City on the other hand can seat only 5 people as standard. The 2022 Metris Passenger van offers impressive shoulder room. However, it gets less head- and legroom than the rivals. A massive 37.4 cubic feet of cargo space makes it more practical than we expect. The Pacifica comes second with 32.3 cu-ft of space. Some of the standout interior features are:

  • Optional Automatic climate control
  • Removable and configurable rear seats
  • Optional Heated rear seats
  • Optional power front seats
  • Reading lights

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The outdated 5.8-inch infotainment unit has been upgraded to a 7-inch touchscreen display in the new model. Moreover, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz Metris Worker Passenger Van comes equipped with features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Besides, it also offers Bluetooth connectivity and AM/FM Radio. The system would also bring in a built-in navigation system with live traffic information. With 5-speakers in the front and 4 at the rear, the audio system would bless the cabin with decent audio quality. Some of the standout infotainment features:

  • 7-inch touchscreen system
  • 5+4-speaker sound system
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • USB and Auxiliary Input

The exterior styling of the 2022 Metris Passenger Van proves that it is a typical Mercedes-Benz. Quality and perfection are evident in the minimalistic and simple design, reminding what it is made for. It doesn’t get any fancy character or lines; instead withdraws itself into a work-focused van with elegant looks. In the 2022 Metris Van, the massive Mercedes logo will be mounted over the massive chrome grille and add to the aesthetics of the front fascia. It is also expected to get new exterior color options and redesigned 16/17-inch wheels.

The 2022 Metris van is expected to get body-colored bumpers and black roof rails. Apart from the massive headlights, you’ll also get auto-on/off aero-composite halogen daytime running lamps with delay-off. The outgoing model gets the best-in-class 126-inch wheelbase and is longer, and taller than the rivals. It is the heaviest in the segment with 5,510 lbs of curb weight. The rear doors come with an electrically sliding function, which makes ingress and egress easier. The external mirrors are manual by standard, upgraded to power-adjustable for an added cost. We expect the 2022 model to come with similar exterior dimensions.

The Pacifica is the largest compact van in its segment. It is longer, wider, and heavier than its rivals by a huge margin. It also has a long wheelbase at 121.6-inches which explains how it offers a balanced cabin space in all three rows as well as impressive cargo space. The Metris offers a longer wheelbase than the Pacifica, helping with better cargo capacity. The ProMaster City wagon is the smallest vehicle in the lot and thus can seat only 5 people. Some of the standout exterior features are:

  • Body-colored bumpers
  • Deep tinted glass
  • Sliding rear doors
  • Tailgate/Rear door lock included w/ Power Door Locks
  • Auto ON/OFF Aero-Composite Halogen DRLs w/Delay Off

Commercial vans like Metris Worker Passenger Van are not crash-tested by the NHTSA or IIHS. However, every Metris van is plentifully equipped with standard and optional safety/driver assistance features. Some features like automated emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring come standard while lane-keeping assist comes as an add-on option. It is also equipped with hill start assist and collision prevention assist

It also gets a post-collision safety system as a standard to ensure your safety when an accident takes place. Moreover, you can also get the PARKTRONIC W/Active Parking Assist Package for an extra $812 and the Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC for an extra $915. A more value for money option will be opting for the Premium Safety package which costs $1,289 extra. For the 2022 model, the prices for the packages are expected to change. Some of the standout safety features are:

  • Automated emergency braking
  • Blind-spot monitoring system
  • Optional lane-keeping assist
  • Hill-start assist
  • Crosswind assist
  • Collision prevention assist
  • Active cruise control
  • Active distance assist

2022 Mercedes-Benz Metris Worker Passenger Van vs Ford Transit Connect Wagon

TheFord Transit is one of the hard-core rivals of the Mercedes-Benz Metris Van. With its high versatility, it outshines its other competitor in the segment. It gets decent underpinnings, lots of features, and an advanced in-cabin experience at competitive pricing. However, the Metris Van is immensely more powerful than the Transit Wagon but is steeply priced, making it unaffordable for many.

2022 Mercedes-Benz Metris Worker Passenger Van V/S 2022 RAM ProMaster City Wagon

The small RAM ProMaster City Wagon is a more affordable and fuel-efficient van in the segment. On the other hand, with immense features and comforts inside the cabin, Metris looks more premium. Compared with the pricier Metris Van, the ProMaster City would fit well on your budget if it is low. However, it is not as powerful or capable as the Merc Van.

2022 Mercedes-Benz Metris Worker Passenger Van V/S 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Van

The Chrysler Pacifica offers better performance than the Metris. It is also priced similarly to the Metris Van. The Pacific offers better fuel economy than Metris despite having a bigger engine. It also offers better legroom across all the rows and is much higher off the ground as compared to the Metris. However, the Metris offers better cargo capacity and many optional packages to suit your desired purpose. It also offers better towing capacity than the Pacifica.

Final Verdict

The new Mercedes-Benz Metris Passenger Van is an immensely capable vehicle. With the best-in-class towing and payload capacity, and impressive power and torque delivery, Metris does justify its price tag. The interior feels more premium and significantly improved over its predecessor and it comes with a lot of customizable options. After all, it’s a Mercedes and it shows in its built quality. The steep pricing of the Metris is where the Ford Transit Connect and Ram ProMaster City get an advantage.
