The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe is available in a single trim configuration namely the S 560 4Matic Coupe in addition to the AMG version which will be reviewed separately. The price for the S 560 4Matic starts at $131,400 excluding additional charges. The S 560 Coupe brings the standard premium package which includes features like active multi-contour seats with massage, heated front seats, surround-view system, etc. It faces stiff competition from the likes of BMW 8 Series Coupe, Jaguar F-Type R Coupe, and Porsche 911 Carrera S.

Which trim should you buy?

As there is only a single trim option for the S Class coupe except for the more wicked AMG S-Class Coupe, we would recommend it without thinking twice. The S-Class coupe offers an exhaustive list of design, luxury, comfort, multimedia, and safety features that are expected from the flagship series of Mercedes-Benz. In addition to all the creature comforts on offer, you can also opt for many different optional packages like AMG Line Exterior for the very desirable AMG styling, Warmth, and Comfort package for an even more comfortable cabin ambiance, and Driver Assistance package for some more advanced safety features.

2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe Engine and Performance

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz S 560 coupe is equipped with a 4.0L bi-turbo V8 engine producing 463 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. It is mated to a 9G-Tronic automatic transmission and as the name suggests it’s a 9-speed gearbox. The transmission is smooth and refined while offering precise shifts every time in different driving situations. The power is transferred to all four wheels via the 4Matic system and the result is better traction over different driving conditions and road surfaces.

The S 560 also comes with Dynamic Select mode which is essentially different drive modes designed to transform the car's character and its dynamics. The modes are Comfort, Eco, and Sport. The Sport mode is surely the best mode to drive this beast and the 9G-Tronic transmission shifts seamlessly within milliseconds to offer you an unparalleled driving experience. The Sport mode essentially eliminates the need to go for the pricier AMG version and provides a very lovable aural experience for all the enthusiasts out there.

The Jaguar F-Type R is the most powerful coupe of the lot and offers better performance than the S 560 coupe. The S 560 coupe does a 0-60 mph sprint in about 4.5 seconds while a quarter-mile drag is done in about 12.8 seconds. The BMW M850i performs much better than the S 560 and is nearly a second quicker to 60 mph than it. The Jaguar F-Type and Porsche 911 Carrera S performs very similarly to the BMW M850i. The Porsche 911 Carrera S can be considered as a winner considering it is equipped with a much smaller engine but gives its bigger rivals a run for their money in terms of raw performance

How does the 2021 Mercedes-Benz S 560 coupe handle?

The Mercedes-Benz S 560 coupe is definitely one of the better handling coupes out there especially considering its higher curb weight. The steering is light and nimble while offering adequate feedback as well. The S 560 is a long and wide car but the accurate steering makes the job quite easy. The Airmatic suspension when coupled with the Adaptive suspension system adjusts the damping and ride height depending upon the driving situation or drive mode selected by the driver.

For high-speed runs, it reduces the ride height for better aerodynamics and in high load conditions, it increases the ride height to avoid scrubbing off the underbody. The 4Matic system helps in delivering adequate traction under all riding conditions. It works in correspondence with the electronic stability program and Electronic traction system to provide maximum torque to the tire with the best grip and can adjust it in real-time for better control and avoid slipping in wet conditions.

 2021 Mercedes-Benz S 560 Coupe Braking Performance

A car that goes fast needs to stop faster and requires better braking performance to do so. The S 560 coupe is a buky car which implies that its momentum will be higher too. To stop a high momentum car, it is imperative to have a very powerful braking system with larger rotors at both ends. The S 560 coupe is equipped with 15.4-inch rotors at the front end and 14.2-inch rotors at the rear end. For a car weighing about 4,784 pounds, the rotor dimensions seem to be adequate. The S 560 coupe also offers torque vectoring braking and an anti-lock braking system. So, we expect the braking performance of the S 560 to be effective and on par with some of the best in the segment.

The Porsche 911 Carrera S is the lightest coupe in the comparison and is equipped with smaller rotors at both ends. But despite the smaller rotors, the braking performance is super effective and it stops completely from the speed of 60 mph within 100 feet of distance which is surely commendable for a performance coupe. It is followed by Jaguar F-Type R with the largest rotors in the comparison and 105 feet of stopping distance.

2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe Fuel Economy

We know that performance and fuel efficiency are inversely proportional for most vehicles. The Mercedes-Benz S 560 coupe is no different and follows the suit. It is a bulky car and offers rib tingling performance, offering less fuel efficiency. It offers about 16 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the highways, and 20 mpg in combined driving conditions. With a large 21.1-gallon fuel tank, it can offer up to 337 miles in the city, 549 miles on the highways, and 422 miles in combined driving conditions. The fuel efficiency is not great but comparable to other cars in the segment.

The Mercedes-Benz S 560 coupe is definitely the segment leader in terms of range. It is equipped with a larger fuel tank and offers a class-leading range of 422 miles in mixed driving conditions. It is followed by BMW M850i with 360 miles of range, Porsche 911 Carrera S with 338 miles of range, and Jaguar F-Type R with 333 miles of range in mixed conditions. The Jaguar F-Type is equipped with a larger engine and is the least fuel-efficient in comparison.

2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe Interior

The interior of the Mercedes-Benz S 560 is definitely one of its USPs. It is one of the best in the segment and comes with all the creature comforts that you could ever ask for. The dashboard is surely a peek into the future with two 12.3-inch displays placed side by side. One of them is the driver information display just behind the steering wheel in the instrument console. The other is the multimedia display right at the center of the dashboard. The center console consists of the COMAND system with a touchpad controller which is essentially a cockpit control system and can be used to manage entertainment, navigation, and other convenience features like swiping, pinching, and even handwriting to control various functions.

All the seats are trimmed in Nappa leather upholstery and the comfort level is very similar to a sofa and you can’t complain about it. The front seats offer heating and ventilation functionality along with a massage function as well. The front seats are 12-way power-adjustable and come with memory function as well. However, being a two-door coupe the rear seats are a bit cramped and lack sufficient headroom and legroom for full-grown adults. The panoramic sunroof aids in improving roominess in the cabin. The Energizing function changes the ambiance, music, fragrance, lighting and offers you a massage for rejuvenation. Overall, the list of comfort features in the cabin is truly exhaustive and the cabin screams quality.

The Mercedes-Benz S560 coupe is definitely the most luxurious and comfortable coupe in comparison. It provides better second-row legroom than its competition. All the cars except the F-Type R can accommodate up to four passengers. The BMW M850i excels with a better cargo capacity of 14.8 cu-ft, followed by Jaguar F-Type R with 144 cu-ft, S 560 Coupe with 10.4 cu-ft, and the 911 Carrera S with just 4.6 cu-ft of space. Some of the standout interior features of the S 560 are:

  • COMAND system with touchpad controller
  • 64-color ambient lighting
  • Nappa leather upholstery

2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe Exterior

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz S 560 coupe’s exterior styling is more elegant and subtle rather than being outright aggressive. The performance and styling don’t match but we like the way it looks. The front fascia imbibes two visually beautiful crystallines LED headlights with daytime running lamps. The front grille embellished in chrome with the star logo looks super-premium. The side profile is where things start getting interesting. The pillarless design with the coupe-style sloping roof looks sassy and surely looks modern.

However, it depleted the headroom inside the cabin. The chrome on the window panes grants it an executive look. The rear profile gets two sleek OLED tail lamps with integrated diode wafers that give it a 3D look. The trapezoidal trunk gate opens vertically. The silver-finish quad exhaust tips let the ferocious roar out in sports mode and look very sporty. Overall, we like the design language which is a combination of subtle elegance and modern styling.

The Mercedes-Benz S 560 coupe is the bulkiest coupe in the comparison. It is also longer, taller, and sits on a longer wheelbase as compared to its rivals. A longer wheelbase helps with better high-speed stability and better rear legroom as well. Its ground clearance is just average but that is what you find in this segment. The BMW M850i comes with a higher ground clearance of 5.0-inches followed by the Mercedes-Benz S 560 coupe with 4.7-inches, the Jaguar F-Type R with 4.2-inches, and Porsche 911 Carrera S with 4.0-inches of ground clearance. Some of the standout exterior features are:

  • All-LED exterior design
  • Pure pillarless design
  • OLED tail lamps

  • Power exterior mirrors

2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe Safety

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz S 560 coupe is equipped with many top-of-the-line safety features that are expected from a flagship series coupe. However, the NHTSA and the IIHS have not tested it and we don’t expect it to be tested anytime soon. The body structure of the S 560 coupe is made from hybrid aluminum and high-strength steel which makes it more resistant to the impact of the collision.

It gets some usual safety features like 10-airbags, an anti-lock braking system, an electronic stability program, torque vectoring braking, a tire pressure monitoring system, and some more. The advanced safety features like adaptive high beam assist, active brake assist, crosswind assist, blind-spot assist, lane keep assist, adaptive braking technology, etc ensure the needed driver assistance and safety of the passengers. Some of the standout safety features are:

  • Intelligent light system headlamps
  • Crosswind assist
  • Lane keep assist
  • Surround view system
  • Adaptive braking technology
  • Car-to-X communication
  • Active brake assist
  • Attention assist

2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe Competition

2021 Mercedes-Benz S 560 Coupe vs 2021 BMW M850i Coupe

The BMW M850i coupe is more powerful than the Mercedes-Benz S 560 coupe. It is equipped with a larger engine and offers identical fuel efficiency. The BMW M850i coupe offers better cargo capacity too. However, it cannot match the opulent cabin and long list of creature comforts that are offered in the S 560 coupe. The BMW M850i is more aggressive with its styling and performance while the S 560 offers great performance with subtle and elegant styling. If you are up for more comfort, go for the S 560 coupe and if higher performance is your priority go for the M850i coupe

2021 Mercedes-Benz S 560 Coupe vs 2021 Jaguar F-type R

The Mercedes-Benz S 560 coupe offers 2+2 seating configuration while the Jaguar F-Type R comes in two-seater configuration only. The Jaguar F-Type R is equipped with a bigger engine and performs better than the S 560 coupe. However, it misses on the interior opulence of the S 560 coupe and a long list of safety features on offer in the S 560 coupe. The S 560 coupe is more fuel efficient and offers better range as well. The Jaguar F-Type R is like a typical jaguar and is ready to pounce while missing out on better interior comfort. Our pick would be the S 560 coupe.

2021 Mercedes-Benz S 560 Coupe vs 2021 Porsche 911 Carrera S

The Porsche 911 Carrera S is a pocket rocket in comparison to the S 560 coupe. It is much more compact and offers better performance as well. The interior features are good but its infotainment system seems dated in comparison to the S 560 coupe. The Porsche 911 Carrera S handles much better than the S 560 coupe, thanks to its lower curb weight. The 911 carrera S offers almost the same fuel efficiency as the S 560 coupe but offers very less cargo capacity in its frunk storage. The Porsche 911 Carrera offers a high quality cabin but can’t beat the luxurious one of the S 560 coupe.

2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe Final Verdict

The Mercedes-Benz S 560 coupe being the flagship series from the manufacturer comes with all the bells and whistles that you would expect from a coupe of its price and stature. It boasts class-leading interior features, comfort, infotainment, and safety features. It is an expensive coupe but you won’t regret spending on one as it offers pretty much everything you could ask for and comes with some optional packages as well if you desire to upgrade. So it's a no-brainer for us and is definitely a worth buying luxury coupe in 2021.
