Overview

A car befitting a Bond villain this German automotive marvel just got a mid-cycle facelift that has surely left us surprised and perplexed. With a cleaner looking front we surely appreciate the facelift but the front and under the hood are the only things that Mercedes spent all their budget on. Sadly the ugly taillights got no attention, at least this time.

With a turbocharged V 6 engine, the 2017 Mercedes Benz SL 450 rushes through the tracks with great speed, panache, and pizzazz. Even with the V 6 the SL 450 manages to have an under 5s time on the clock for 0-60mph.

The Quarter mile parameter follows a similar pattern too.

The BMW is quite near under this regard too with 11.0 feet to go with the 13.5 of the Mercedes Benz. The same cannot be said of the Porsche though, which despite not being known for this regard, does horrible here with a lowly 5.6 feet.

Exterior

7.8/10

Competition

BMW 640i Convertible

The fight between the BMW and the Mercedes-Benz goes right down to the wire. Both generate almost equal figures in the engine capacity and the fuel economy. The cargo capacity is also almost equal. They are priced similar too and does follow the age old rivalry in terms of ride quality too, which is impeccable under this regard.

However, the Mercedes Benz does pip the BMW on accounts of a marginally better engine with a sports car-ish feel to it and a much better luxurious experience overall.

Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet

Unlike the Porsche, the Mercedes Benz SL 450 has sprightly handling without forgoing a comfortable ride. Both models have a powerful engine lineup and similar fuel efficiency, but the SL 450’s rear seats are a little roomier. However, if you look at practicality, the cargo capacity of the Mercedes Benz is almost double to that of the Porche, while the Fuel economy remains at par.

So, the car is with much better interiors and luxurious ride experience, along with better comfort too, the Mercedes Benz SL 450 wins this comparison hands down.

Final Verdict

Endowed with a peppy and energetic turbocharged V 6 and an agile suspension this Merc is a fun ride through and through. Fun for daily driving and cruising this car also offers a great mileage which only adds to its accolades. For the negatives, the cluttered and cumbersome infotainment and the overly firm ride may not please everyone. On par with others on mechanical and performance aspects but a notch above in the luxury segment, this fight is won by the 2017 Mercedes Benz SL 450 with ease.
